Dad looks as though he’s concentrating hard. He’s cooking a pancake, and that’s what this story is called- The Pancake. In this story Dad has quite a lot of help when he makes the pancake. But, the ending isn’t quite what you’d expect. Let’s read it to find out what happened.
아빠는 무언가에 열심히 집중하고 있는 것처럼 보이네요. 아빠는 팬케잌을 만들고 있어요. 그래서 이 이야기의 제목은 The Pancake 이랍니다. 이 이야기에서 아빠는 팬케잌을 만들면서 많은 도움을 받아요. 하지만 마지막에 아무도 상상하지 못했던 일이 일어나게 됩니다. 어떤 일이 일어났는지 함께 알아보도록 해요.

[Narrator]: Dad loves to watch programmes about cooking on television, so when he came to make a pancake, he decided to have some fun. He pretended he was on television. Biff and Chip were used to Dad’s jokes, so they joined in. ‘The frying pan,’ said Dad ‘To make the pancake, you need a large pan.’ Chip pointed at Dad. ‘But first you need a large cook,’ he laughed. ‘And make sure he has washed his hands,’ laughed Biff. ‘Cheeky!’ said Dad.
아빠는 텔레비전의 요리 프로그램을 보는 것을 매우 좋아해요. 그래서 아빠는 재미있게 팬케잌을 만들어 보기로 해요. 아빠는 마치 진짜 텔레비전에 나오는 요리사처럼 행동했어요. 비프와 칩은 아빠의 장난에 익숙해져 있었기 때문에 자연스럽게 함께 요리를 하기로 했어요. ‘프라이팬, 팬케잌을 만들려면, 아주 큰 프라이팬이 필요해.’ 아빠가 말했어요. 그 때 칩이 아빠를 가리키며, ‘하지만 먼저 아주 큰 요리사도 필요해요,’ 라고 말하자 아빠가 웃었어요. ‘그리고 먼저 그가 손을 씻었는지 확인해야 해요,’ 비프가 웃으며 말했어요. ‘이런 장난꾸러기들!’ 아빠가 말했어요.

[Narrator]: ‘Since you’re so cheeky, you can all help me,’ said Dad to the children. ‘You can fetch me the ingredients.’ ‘I’ll need a bag of flour and some eggs.’ Biff fetched the flour and Chip brought the eggs. ‘The flour,’ said Biff, tipping some into Dad’s bowl. ‘Hang on,’ said Dad, ‘you can’t just tip it in like that. We have to weigh some out.’ ‘The eggs,’ said Chip. Kipper took one and cracked it into the bowl. ‘Hang on,’ said Dad, but it was too late. Kipper had already cracked the egg.
'너희들은 아빠에게 장난을 쳤으니, 모두 날 도와야 한단다.’ 아빠가 아이들에게 말했어요. ‘나에게 재료들을 가져다 주면 된단다. 일단 계란 몇 개와 밀가루 한 봉지가 필요하단다.’ 비프는 밀가루를, 칩은 계란을 가져왔어요. ‘여기 밀가루요,’ 비프가 아빠의 동그란 그릇에 뿌리며 말했어요. ‘잠깐,’ 아빠가 말했어요. ‘그렇게 조금씩 부으면 안되고, 조금 덜어 무게를 재야해.’ ‘여기 계란이요,’ 칩이 말했어요. 키퍼는 하나를 꺼내서 그릇에 깨뜨려 넣었어요. ‘잠깐만,’ 하고 아빠가 말했지만, 너무 늦었어요. 키퍼는 이미 계란을 깨뜨려버렸답니다.

[Narrator]: ‘Now,’ said Dad, ‘the next thing to do is to whisk some milk into the flour and egg.’ Biff poured a little of the milk into the bowl. ‘The milk,’ she said. Chip began to whisk the mixture. ‘Steady, Chip,’ said Biff. ‘You’re making the flour fly everywhere.’ ‘Meanwhile, Kipper and I will melt some butter in the frying pan,’ said Dad. Kipper cut off a slab of butter. ‘The butter,’ he said.
‘자 이제,’ 아빠가 말했어요. ‘다음은 밀가루와 계란에 우유를 넣고 휘저어야 한단다.’ 비프는 그릇에 우유를 조금 넣으며 ‘여기 우유요,’ 하고 말했어요. 칩은 반죽을 휘젓기 시작했어요. ‘칩, 얌전히 좀 해,’ 비프가 말했어요. ‘밀가루가 사방에 날리고 있잖아.’ ‘그 동안 키퍼와 나는 프라이팬에 버터를 녹여야겠군,’ 아빠가 말했어요. 키퍼는 버터 조각을 자르며, ‘버터,’ 라고 말했어요.

[Narrator]: ‘Now stand back everyone,’ said Dad. ‘I’m going to cook the pancake.’ Everyone stood back as Dad heated up the butter on the stove. There was a sizzling noise as Dad poured some of the mixture into the hot pan. Soon the pancake was cooked on one side. ‘Now to turn it over,’ said Dad. ‘Stand back even further,’ he ordered. ‘Oh, no!’ said Biff. ‘He’s going to toss the pancake. I hope it doesn’t end up on the floor.’ ‘Or stick to the ceiling,’ laughed Chip. ‘The pancake, said Dad. ‘Here it goes!’ and he tossed it high in the air.
‘이제 모두 뒤로 물러나세요,’ 아빠가 말했어요. ‘이제 팬케잌을 구울 거란다.’ 아빠가 스토브 위에 버터를 익히려 하자 모두 뒤로 물러섰어요. 지글지글 하는 소리와 함께 아빠는 뜨겁게 달궈진 프라이팬에 반죽을 부었어요. 팬케잌 한 쪽이 다 익어갔어요. ‘자 이제 뒤집어야겠군,’ 아빠가 말했어요. ‘다들 더 멀리 물러서세요,’ 아빠가 명령했어요. ‘오, 안돼!’ 비프가 말했어요. ‘아빠가 팬케잌을 뒤집으려고 해. 바닥에 떨어지지 않았으면 좋겠어.’ ‘아니면 천장에 달라 붙거나,’ 칩이 웃으며 말했어요. ‘자~팬케잌이 나가신다!’ 아빠가 팬케잌을 공중으로 던지며 말했어요.

[Narrator]: Well, Dad didn’t drop the pancake, and he and the children hadn’t made it to eat. They had made it so that Mum could be in the pancake race. Mum ran like the wind with Dad’s pancake. She had to toss it as she ran because that what you have to do in a pancake race. ‘Come on Mum!’ shouted Biff, Chip, and Kipper.
휴우~ 아빠는 다행히도 팬케잌을 떨어뜨리지 않았어요. 사실 아빠와 아이들은 팬케잌을 먹기 위해 만든 게 아니라, 엄마의 팬케잌 경주를 위해 만든 것이었답니다. 엄마는 아빠의 팬케잌을 들고 바람처럼 달렸어요. 엄마는 팬케잌을 공중으로 던지면서 달렸어요, 왜냐하면 팬케잌 경주는 그렇게 하는 것이기 때문이에요. ‘엄마 파이팅!’ 하고 비프, 칩 그리고 키퍼가 소리쳤어요.
