Have you ever been on the beach at the seaside? Did you have fun at the beach? Mum and Dad have taken Biff, Chip and Kipper to the beach to have some fun. This beach has a pier on it. Have you ever been on a pier?
바닷가의 해변에 가본 적이 있나요? 해변에서 즐거운 시간을 보냈나요? 엄마와 아빠는 비프, 칩 그리고 키퍼를 해변으로 데려가서 즐거운 시간을 보내고 있었어요. 이 해변에는 부두가 있어요. 부두에 가본 적이 있나요?

이제 이 책의 첫 번째 페이지로 돌아가봐요.

[Narrator]: It was fun on the pier. The pier went right out to sea. The Children could look down and see people on the sand below them. There were lots of things to do on the pier. There was a man putting his head through a board. ‘What’s he doing?’ asked Chip, ‘And why is everyone laughing?’ Dad and Mum smiled. ‘We’ll show you,’ said Dad.
부두에서 노는 건 재미있었어요. 부두는 바다의 바로 바깥쪽에 있어요. 아이들은 부두 아래의 모래밭에 있는 사람들을 내려다 볼 수도 있었고 부두에는 정말 할 수 있는 놀이들이 많아요. 한 남자가 보드에 얼굴을 내밀고 있었어요. ‘저 아저씨는 무엇을 하는 거예요? 그리고 왜 모두들 웃고 있죠?’ 칩이 물었어요. 엄마와 아빠는 미소 지으며, ‘우리가 왜 그런지 보여 줄게,’하고 말했어요.

[Narrator]: Further down the pier was another board. Two funny men were painted on it. There were holes where their faces should be. Mum and Dad put their faces through the holes so that the funny men had faces like Mum’s and Dad’s. Kipper, Chip and Biff laughed. Biff took a photograph. ‘This will make a really good picture,’ she said.
부두의 먼 발치에 두 명의 우스꽝스러운 남자가 그려진 또 다른 보드가 있었어요. 그들의 얼굴이 있는 곳에는 구멍이 있었죠. 엄마와 아빠가 구멍에 얼굴을 넣자, 엄마와 아빠가 그 우스꽝스러운 남자들처럼 보였어요. 키퍼, 칩 그리고 비프 모두 웃었어요.
비프는 그 모습을 사진을 찍으며 말했어요. ‘이건 정말 재미있는 사진이 될 꺼야,’

[Narrator]: There was a Hall of Mirrors on the pier. This is where the family went next. Every mirror was a different shape so that when you looked in it, it made you into an odd shape, too. Kipper, Biff and Dad looked into one mirror. Biff and Dad looked very tall and their heads looked long. Kipper’s head looked wide and fat.
부두에는 거울로 된 벽도 있었어요. 여기는 가족들이 다음으로 간 곳 이예요. 모든 거울은 다른 모양으로 되어 있어서, 비춰보면 내 얼굴도 이상한 모양으로 나타나게 되요. 키퍼, 비프 그리고 아빠는 한 거울을 들여다봤어요. 비프와 아빠는 매우 키가 커 보였고, 머리도 길어 보였어요. 그리고 키퍼의 머리는 넓고 뚱뚱해 보였답니다.

[Narrator]: On the other side of the pier were some trampolines. The children wanted to have a go. Chip, Biff and Kipper bounced up and down. Dad and Floppy watched. ‘It’s fun,’ said Biff, ‘but it’s hard work, doing all this bouncing.’ Floppy began to pull on his lead. ‘He wants to go for a run,’ said Dad. ‘We’ll have to find a place where we can let him off his lead.’
부두의 다른 쪽에는 트램플린도 있었어요. 아이들은 그것을 타고 싶어했죠. 칩, 비프 그리고 키퍼는 그 위에서 아래 위로 깡총깡총 뛰었어요. 아빠와 플로피는 그것을 지켜보고 있었어요. ‘너무 재미있어요,’ 비프가 말했어요. ‘하지만 이렇게 계속 깡총깡총 뛰는 건 너무 힘들어요,’ 플로피는 줄을 잡아 당기기 시작했어요. ‘플로피가 뛰어 놀고 싶어 하는 구나, 그럼 플로피가 줄을 풀고 뛰어 놀 수 있는 장소를 찾아야겠어.’ 아빠가 말했어요.

[Narrator]: Oh no! Look what happened when they let Floppy go for a run. He rushed down the beach and got covered in mud. He ran back to Dad looking really pleased with himself. ‘Oh Floppy!’ said Dad. ‘Look at the state of you. We’ve got to take you home in the car.’ ‘Well don’t let him sit in the back with us,’ said Biff.
오 이런! 플로피가 놀러 갔을 때 무슨 일이 일어났는지 볼까요? 플로피는 해변으로 뛰어 내려가서 온통 진흙을 뒤집어썼지 뭐예요. 그리고는 기분이 너무 좋아져서 다시 아빠에게로 갔어요. ‘오 플로피!’ 아빠가 말했어요. 네 모습 좀 보렴. 집에 갈 때 너를 차에 태워야 할 텐데.’'음.. 플로피는 우리랑 같이 뒷자리에 타면 안되겠는데요.’ 비프가 말했어요.
