[Narrator]: Dad, Mum, Biff and Chip looked at an apple on the top of the tree.
아빠, 엄마, 비프 그리고 칩은 사과 나무 꼭대기에 달려있는 사과를 보았어요.
[Biff]: Look!
저기 봐봐!
[Dad]: It’s on the top of the tree!
사과가 나무 꼭대기에 매달려 있구나.
[Chip]: Let’s pick!
저 사과를 따요!

[Narrator]: Dad stood on tip-toe and stretched up.
아빠는 까치발로 서서 손을 높이 뻗었어요
[Mum]: Right there!
조금만 더..
[Biff]: We need to make him taller!
아빠의 키를 더 커지게 만들어야 해!

[Narrator]: Chip sat on Dad’s shoulders and Mum handed him the stick.
칩이 아빠의 어깨에 올라타서 엄마가 건네준 막대기를 받았어요.
[Dad]: 'Ouch, Ouch!' said Dad.
'아이고, 아파라.' 아빠가 말했어요
[Chip]: Almost there!
거의 됐어요, 조금만 더
[Mum]: Come on, Chip!
칩! 조금만 더 힘내.

[Narrator]: Chip put the end of the stick under the stalk of the apple and gently pushed it upwards. Then the apple fell.
칩은 막대기 끝을 사과에 대고 조심스럽게 사과를 밀어내기 시작했어요. 그러자 사과가 데구르르 굴러 떨어졌어요
[Chip]: 'Catch it, Mum!' shouted Chip.
'엄마 받아요!' 칩이 소리쳤어요
[Mum]: 'Catch it, Biff!' shouted Mum.
'비프야 사과를 받아라!' 엄마가 소리쳤어요.
[Mum and Biff]: 'Catch it, Kipper!' shouted Mum and Biff.
'키퍼 사과를 받아라!' 엄마와 비프가 소리쳤어요.
[Everyone]: Oh, no!
오~안돼!

[Narrator]: Floppy crunched it into three pieces and began to chew one of the pieces up.
그 때 플로피가 사과를 받아서 냠냠 세 조각을 낸 뒤 맛있게 한 조각을 먹어버렸어요
[Mum]: 'Oh, Floppy.' said Mum.
오~플로피. 엄마가 말했어요.
[Kipper]: Oh….
어……
[Dad]: He was the only of you who could catch. Ha ha ha!!!
플로피만 저 맛있는 사과를 받을 수 있었어. 하하하하!!

There was a very nice red apple on the top of the tree, but it was just too high to reach. Dad and the twins didn’t know how to pick the last apple on the tree.
Now, let’s go back to the first page of this book.
사과나무 꼭대기에 빨간 사과가 탐스럽게 열려 있었어요. 하지만 너무 높아서 아무도 사과를 딸 수가 없었답니다. 아빠와 쌍둥이 남매는 이 마지막 사과를 어떻게 따야 할지 고민하고 있었어요.
자, 이제 첫 번째 페이지를 펴주세요.

[Narrator]: ‘It’s a funny thing,’ said Dad. ‘But the very last apple on this tree is the biggest and the most juicy-looking of all’ The children had spent the afternoon with Mum and Dad picking apples in the Orchard and the very last apple of all was too high on the tree for anyone to get at. ‘Do you have any idea how to get this apple?
“이거 참 신기하네.” 아빠가 말했어요. “그런데 사과 나무에 달린 마지막 사과가 가장 크고 과즙이 많아 제일 맛있어 보이는데,,” 아이들은 엄마와 아빠와 함께 과수원에서 사과를 따면서 오후를 보냈어요. 하지만 사과나무에 남은 마지막 사과가 너무 높게 달려있어서 아무도 딸 수 없었답니다.
“어떻게 저 사과를 딸 수 있을까? 생각나는 사람 있어요?

[Narrator]: ‘How about using a long stick?’ suggested Chip. Chip fetched the stick. It was forked at one end and it would have been just right except for one thing. It was too short! Dad stood on tip-toe and stretched up as far as he could, but the stick wasn’t quite long enough!’ ‘We have to make Dad taller!’, said Chip.
“긴 막대기를 사용해보는 건 어때요? 칩이 제안했어요. 칩이 긴 막대기를 가지고 왔어요. 그 막대기는 한쪽 끝이 포크모양처럼 되어 있어 사과를 딸 수 있을 것 같아 보였어요. 하지만 칩이 가져온 막대기는 너무 짧았어요. 아빠가 까치발로 서서 팔을 쭉 뻗어 보았지만 역시나 막대기는 사과를 따기에는 너무 짧았답니다. “아빠의 키를 더 크게 만들자!” 칩이 이야기했어요.

[Narrator]: Chip’s idea was a good one. He sat on Dad’s shoulders and Mum handed him the stick. ‘If ...I ... reach...up...as...far...I…can’ grunted Chip. ‘Come on, Chip. Try and hook the apple off and I’ll catch it when it falls.’ ‘Here goes…!’
칩의 생각은 정말 좋았어요. 칩이 아빠의 어깨에 올라 앉아서 엄마가 건네준 막대기를 들었어요. “내가..조금만,,,더 팔을…뻗으면..닿을 수도….” 칩이 낑낑대며 말했어요. “칩~조금만 더! 막대기로 사과를 끌어당겨봐. 사과가 바닥으로 떨어지면 내가 받을게.” “자~간다~!”

[Narrator]: Chip carefully put the end of the stick under the stalk of the apple and gently pushed it upwards. Then the apple fell. ‘Catch it, Mum!’ shouted Chip. But Mum didn’t catch it. Biff didn’t catch it. Kipper didn’t catch it, either. The apple fell straight through his hands and bounced on the ground towards Floppy. Floppy opened his mouth and sprang towards the apple.
칩은 조심스럽게 막대기의 끝을 사과 끝에 대고 천천히 위쪽으로 밀어 올렸어요. 그때 사과가 아래로 뚝 떨어졌어요. “엄마! 사과를 받아요!” 칩에 큰소리로 말했어요. 하지만 엄마는 떨어지는 사과를 받지 못했어요. 비프도 받지 못했어요. 키퍼도 받지 못했어요. 사과는 키퍼의 손에서 미끄러져서 플로피가 있는 곳으로 데굴데굴 굴러갔어요. 그러자 플로피가 입을 벌리더니 사과를 향해서 뛰어오기 시작했어요.

[Narrator]: Look at what happened to the apple. Floppy crunched it into three pieces and began to chew one of the pieces up. ‘Oh Floppy’ said Mum. Dad laughed and laughed. ‘You can’t blame Floppy. He was the only one to catch the apple.’ ‘Well. The good thing is that we don’t have to argue over which one of us should eat it.’ Everyone laughed.
사과는 과연 어떻게 됐을까요? 플로피는 사과를 세 조각으로 나눈 뒤 한 조각을 냠냠 맛있게 먹기 시작했어요. “오~플로피~~” 엄마가 플로피 이름을 불렀어요. 아빠는 사과를 맛있게 씹어먹는 플로피를 보며 웃음을 참을 수가 없었어요. “플로피 잘못이 아니야. 플로피만 사과나무에서 떨어진 사과를 받을 수 있었잖아.” “음..맞아~제일 맛있게 생긴 저 사과를 누가 먹을지 고민하지 않아도 되니까.” 가족 모두들 플로피를 보며 행복하게 웃었어요.
