Do you sometimes wake up feeling really good because you know that something very special is going to happen? One morning, when Kipper woke up, he knew it was a special day. He yawned and gave a great big stretch. ‘It’s the day of the great big surprise.’ Now this great big surprise wasn’t one that was going to happen to Kipper. It was a secret. So Kipper got out of bed ever so quietly and tiptoed into the bathroom.
여러분은 무언가 특별한 일이 생길 것을 알고 즐거운 마음으로 잠에서 깬 적이 있나요? 어느날 아침, 키퍼가 잠에서 깨었을 때, 그는 그 날이 특별한 날이란 걸 알았답니다. 그는 하품을 하며 크게 기지개를 폈어요. ‘오늘은 ‘깜짝 놀랄 일’이 있는 날이야.’ 이 깜짝 놀랄 파티는 키퍼에게 일어날 것이 아니었어요. 누구한테 냐구요? 그것은 비밀이랍니다. 그래서 키퍼는 매우 조용하게 침대에서 나와 발 끝으로 걸으며 욕실로 갔답니다.

Kipper found that Chip was already in the bathroom.
키퍼는 칩이 이미 욕실에 있다는 것을 알았어요.
Even though Kipper had tiptoed across the landing as quietly as a mouse, and had not breathed a word, or made a single sound, Chip went ‘Ssshhh’ and whispered,
키퍼는 쥐처럼 조용히 발 끝으로 걸으며 아무 말도 하지 않고 아무 소리도 내지 않았음에도, 칩은 ‘쉬~~~쉿!’ 하며 속삭였지요.
‘Keep quiet, Kipper. You mustn’t make a sound. This is a silent operation.’
‘조용히 해, 키퍼. 넌 소리를 내어서는 안돼. 이건 조용한 작업이거든.’
Kipper didn’t know what a silent operation was, but he thought that Chip had made far more noise with his big ‘ssshhh’ and his loud whisper than he had made in getting to the bathroom.
키퍼는 조용한 작업이 뭔지는 알지 못했지만, 그가 욕실로 들어오는 소리보다 칩이 ‘쉬~~~쉿!’하며 내는 소리와 속삭임이 훨씬 크다고 생각했어요.
Kipper ran the tap, ever so quietly, and began to clean his teeth.
키퍼는 매우 조용하게 가볍게 뛰고 나서 양치질을 시작했어요.
‘Ssshhh!!’ hissed Chip even more loudly.
‘쉬~~~쉿!’ 칩은 더 큰 소리고 쉿 소리를 내었어요.
‘Mmmmm…blllbb being quiet,’ whispered Kipper through the foaming toothpaste.
‘으으으으음 브브브 조용히 해,’ 키퍼는 치약거품 사이로 속삭였어요.

After he had washed and clean his teeth, Kipper tiptoed back to his bedroom and started to get dressed.

Biff and Chip were already dressed.
비프와 칩은 이미 옷을 다 입었지요.
‘Hurry up, Kipper,’ whispered Biff. ‘And don’t forget you-know-what.’
‘서둘러, 키퍼. 그리고 ‘너가 알고 있는 것’을 잊지 말구!’ 비프가 속삭였어요.
Kipper opened his bottom drawer and quietly pulled out some clothes and the surprise he had hidden there.
키퍼는 바닥 서랍을 열고 옷과 그가 그곳에 숨겨놓은 ‘놀라운 것’을 꺼냈어요.
‘Ssshhh’ went Biff as Kipper did this.
‘쉬~~~쉿!’ 키퍼가 그렇게 할 때 비프가 쉿 하고 말했죠.
‘If anything spoils this surprise, it will be all this loud sshhing,’ thought Kipper.
‘만약 이 깜짝 놀랄 일이 망쳐진다면, 그건 전부 이 쉿 소리 때문일꺼야.’ 키퍼는 생각했습니다.

Downstairs, Kipper found Biff and Chip putting on their jackets.

‘Oh Kipper,’ whispered Biff. ‘You’re not dressed yet. Come on. Chip and I are ready to go.’

Kipper didn’t say a word. Very carefully, he began to pull a clean shirt from out of the pile of ironing that had been done the night before.
키퍼는 한마디도 하지 않았습니다. 매우 조심스럽게 그는 어제 저녁에 다림질 해서 쌓아놓은 옷들 중에서 깨끗한 옷을 하나 꺼냈어요.
One or two of the shirts fell from the top of the pile.
맨 위에 있던 셔츠 2~3개가 떨어졌어요.
This time Biff and Chip both went ‘Ssshhh!’
이번엔 비프와 칩이 같이 ‘쉿~~~쉿!’ 소리를 냈답니다.
The ‘sshh’ sounded louder than ever at the bottom of the stairs.
그 ‘쉬~’ 소리는 그 층에서 더욱 크게 울렸답니다.

Kipper was almost ready for the ‘big surprise’ by the time Biff and chip had quietly opened the front door.
키퍼는 비프와 칩이 조용히 대문을 열 때 ‘깜짝 파티’를 위해 거의 준비가 다 되어 있었어요.
The post lady had arrived and she had a bigger pile of envelopes than usual.
우편배달 아가씨가 도착해 있었고 그녀는 평소보다 많은 편지봉투를 가지고 있었죠.
‘It’s the morning of our big surprise,’ Chip whispered to the post lady.
‘우리들의 ‘깜짝 파티’ 아침이에요,’ 칩이 우편배달 아가씨에게 속삭였어요.
‘The problem is getting Kipper to hurry up and worst of all, trying to stop him making a noise.’
‘문제는 키퍼를 서두르게 하는 것이고, 더 나쁜 것은 그가 시끄럽게 하는 걸 멈추게 하는 일이죠.’
Kipper was quietly putting his trainers on.
키퍼는 조용하게 그의 운동화를 신었어요.
‘Sssshhhhh,’ went Biff, Chip and the post lady together, and they all went round to the back of the house.
‘쉬~~~~~~~쉿!!!’ 비프, 칩 그리고 우편배달 아가씨가 함께 쉿 소리를 냈고, 그들은 모두 집 뒷마당으로 갔어요.

Well, you can see what the surprise was, and who it was for.
글쎄, 여러분은 깜짝 파티가 무엇인지, 누구를 위한 것인지 알 수 있을 거에요.
It was for Dad because it was his birthday.
그것은 아빠를 위한 것인데 그의 생일이기 때문이죠.
The children had been planning it secretly for two days.
아이들은 이틀동안 비밀리에 계획을 세웠던 것이에요.
Chip had made a big banner saying ‘Happy birthday, Dad, 35 today!’ and Biff had worked out a way to hang it across the garden.
칩은 ‘35번째 생일을 축하해요 아빠!’라고 써진 현수막을 만들었고, 비프는 정원을 가로질러 그것을 걸었어요.
‘Happy birthday, Dad’ everyone called and the children made a lot of noise to wake Dad up.
‘생일 축하해요, 아빠’ 모두가 외쳤고, 아이들은 아빠가 잠에서 깨도록 시끄러운 소리를 내었죠.
Dad pulled back the curtain and looked down at everyone with astonishment.
아빠는 깜짝 놀라 커튼을 열고 모두를 내려다 보았어요.
But he was pleased.
그는 기뻐했답니다.
It was the nicest surprise he had had for ages and ages.
그것은 그가 살아온 동안의 가장 멋진 깜짝 파티였어요.
Mum had come out into the garden in her dressing gown.
엄마도 가운을 입은 채 정원으로 나왔어요.
She had a cup of coffee, and she joined in the surprise too.
그녀 또한 커피 한잔을 든 채 깜짝 파티에 참여했답니다.
‘Trust you to wake up before we began the surprise!’ said Biff.
‘우리가 깜짝 파티를 시작하기 전에 일어나셨군요!’ 비프가 말했어요.
‘Well, I would still have been asleep,’ said Mum, ‘but I was woken up by these strange noises.’
‘글쎄, 난 잠들어 있었어. 근데 이상한 소리 때문에 잠에서 깼단다.’ 엄마가 말했어요.
‘I bet that was Kipper,’ said Chip.
‘그건 키퍼였을꺼야.’ 칩이 말했어요.
‘If it was he was making a funny noise, ‘ said Mum.
‘만약 그가 우스운 소리를 냈다면 그렇겠지.’ 엄마가 말했어요.
‘It was a sort of ssshhing noise. Like this: sssshhhh!’
‘그건 이렇게 ‘쉬~~~~~쉿!’하는 소리였단다.’
Kipper looked at Biff and chip. ‘See!’ he said.
키퍼는 비프와 칩을 쳐다보며, ‘그 봐!’라고 말했답니다.
