Oh dear! This is Kipper on his first day.
어머나! 오늘은 키퍼가 어린이 집에 가는 첫날이군요.
Why do you think he is holding on to the gatepost so tightly?

‘Come on Kipper,’ said Mum. ‘You’ll really like it when you get inside.’
‘이리와, 키퍼. 안에 들어가면 넌 분명 좋아할꺼야.’ 엄마가 말합니다.
‘You’ll love nursery school,’ Biff had said. ‘I did.’
‘넌 어린이 집을 좋아하게 될꺼야, 나도 그랬거든.’ 비프가 말했어요.
‘It’s brilliant,’ said Clip. ‘In fact I wish I was still there.’ He remembered the water, the sand tray, the messy paints and all the toys.
‘정말 근사해. 사실 난 아직도 내가 거기에 있다면 좋겠어.’ 그는 물놀이와 모래놀이, 그림물감 그리고 모든 장난감들을 회상했어요.
When the day came for Kipper to go, he felt very, very nervous.
키퍼는 어린이 집에 가야 할 날이 다가오자, 너무 너무 걱정이 되었어요.
‘I wish Biff and Chip hadn’t said how good it was going to be.’ He thought.
비프와 칩이 그렇게 좋았다고 말하지 않길 바랬는데.’키퍼는 생각했어요.
‘I wish they’d said that THEY had been a bit nervous. It isn’t easy to meet a whole lot of new children. What if nobody likes me!’
‘난 그들이 조금은 긴장했다고 말하길 원했다고. 그 많은 새 친구들을 만나는건 쉽지 않을거야. 아무도 나를 좋아하지 않으면 어쩌지?’

At last, Mum and Miss Harvey, the teacher, persuaded Kipper to let go of the gatepost and go inside.
마침내, 엄마와 선생님 하비는 키퍼가 문 기둥을 놓고 안으로 들어가도록 설득했어요.
The room was full of children all playing busily.
방은 바쁘게 놀고있는 아이들로 가득했어요.
‘Hello,’ some of them said. ‘Come and play with us.’
‘안녕, 이리 와서 우리랑 놀자!!’ 그들 중 몇몇이 말했어요.
Kipper didn’t answer.
키퍼는 아무 대답도 하지 않았어요.
Instead he played in the cloakroom, feeling too shy and nervous to come out.
대신 그는 밖으로 나가기엔 너무 부끄럽고 겁나서 옷방 안에서 놀았어요.
Miss Harvey suggested that Mum went home.
하비 선생님은 엄마에게 집에 가시라고 했어요.
‘Don’t worry about Kipper,’ Miss Harvey said. ‘He’ll be fine.’
‘키퍼는 걱정마세요, 그는 곧 괜찮아질 거에요.’ 하비 선생님은 말했어요.
After Mum had gone, Miss Harvey, and two of the children, Caroline and Tony, made Kipper feel a lot better.
엄마가 간 후, 선생님과 두 명의 아이들, 캐롤린과 토미는 키퍼의 기분이 나아지도록 만들었어요.
‘Come and play with me and Tony,’ said Caroline. ‘We’ve got a whole box of cars like this one to play with.’
‘이리와서 나랑 토미랑 놀자!, 우리는 가지고 놀 수 있는 이런 자동차가 아주 많아!!’ 케롤린이 말했어요.

Kipper played with Caroline and Tony for a little while.
키퍼는 잠시동안 케롤린 그리고 토니와 놀았어요.
Then Miss Harvey suggested that he went to play in the home corner.
그 후 하비 선생님은 키퍼에게 ‘소꿉놀이공간’에서 놀아보라고 제안했죠.
The home corner had a pretend cooker with pretend pots and pans.
소꿉놀이공간에는 장난감 냄비와 후라이팬 같은 요리도구가 있었어요.
It had a little pretend sink and a pretend washing machine, and an ironing board with a toy iron.
거기엔 작은 장난감 싱크대와 세탁기, 그리고 장난감 다리미와 다리미 받침대가 있었어요.
It even had a toy vacuum cleaner.
심지어 장난감으로 된 진공청소기도 있었어요.
‘Come and play in the home corner, Kipper,’ said Miss Harvey.
‘이리와서 소꿉놀이공간에서 놀아보렴, 키퍼.’ 하비 선생님이 말했어요.
‘Look, Melissa is cooking a Lego stew for Alec and Roddy.’
‘봐! 멜리사는 알렉과 로디를 위해 레고 스튜를 만들고 있어.’
‘It’s not quite ready,’ said Melissa. ‘The red pieces aren’t done yet.’
‘아직이야. 빨간게 아직 안익었어!’
Alec and Roddy were pretending to get hungry.
‘알렉과 로디는 배고픈 척 했어요.

Melissa said that Kipper could play at cooking in the home corner.
멜리사는 키퍼도 소꿉놀이공간에서 요리를 할 수 있다고 말했어요.
Kipper decided to make a huge pretend stew.
키퍼는 거대한 스튜를 만들기로 했어요.
‘I’ll put in carrots, and onions, and sausages,’ he said.
‘난 당근과 양파, 그리고 소시지를 넣을꺼야!’ 그는 말했어요.
He put so many pieces of Lego in the pan that some of them fell out when he stirred them.
그는 팬에 너무 많은 레고를 넣어서 그가 휘저을 때 몇 개가 밖으로 빠져나왔어요.
‘Watch out!’ said Lisa. ‘Your stew is boiling over.’
‘조심해!, 너의 스튜가 끓어 넘쳐.’ 리사가 말했어요.
Everyone in the nursery school was busy. Everyone looked happy.
어린이 집의 모든 사람은 바빴어요. 모두가 즐거워 보였죠.
Best of all, everyone shared all the toys and played together.
무엇보다도, 모두가 장난감을 함께 썼고 함께 놀았어요.
‘When my stew is cooked, I’ll ask Miss Harvey if I can play with the water,’ thought Kipper.
‘내 스튜가 다 되면, 난 하비 선생님께 나도 물놀이를 할 수 있냐고 물어봐야지.’ 키퍼는 생각했어요.
‘Then I’ll play in the sand tray.’
‘그리고는 모래판에서 놀아야지.’
Later on, Miss Harvey told Kipper he could do a painting.
나중에 하비 선생님은 키퍼에게 그림을 그려보라고 말했어요.
Kipper enjoyed that, and he was really pleased when Miss Harvey put it up on the wall.
키퍼는 너무나 즐겁게 그림을 그렸고, 하비 선생님이 그의 그림을 벽에 걸어주었을 때는 너무나 기뻤답니다.
In fact Kipper was so busy and so happy that, by the end of the morning, he had forgotten how nervous he had felt.
사실 키퍼는 너무 바쁘고 또 너무 즐거웠기 때문에, 오전이 끝날 즈음에는 그가 겁내했었다는 것을 잊어버렸답니다.
And when Mum came to fetch Kipper, guess what…?

Kipper didn’t want to go home.
키퍼는 집에 가고싶지 않았어요.
‘Do I have to go?’ he said. ‘Why can’t I stay for the afternoon?
‘나 가야해? 오후내내 여기에 있으면 안돼?” 그는 말했어요.
In the end, Mum had to force Kipper to put his coat on, and she had to pull Kipper out of the door.
마침내, 엄마는 키퍼에게 코트를 입게하고 문 밖으로 나가게 해야만 했어요.
‘Goodbye,’ called Miss Harvey. ‘I’ll see you tomorrow!’
‘안녕, 내일 보자!’ 선생님이 외쳤어요.
‘Great!’ said Kipper. ‘And thank you.’
‘좋아요!, 감사합니다.’ 키퍼가 말했어요.
‘You’re welcome,’ said Miss Harvey.
‘천만에.’ 선생님이 말했습니다.
‘I don’t know,’ said mum. ‘I had to pull you in. Now I’ve got to pull you out.’
‘모를 일이 구나. 올때는 끌고 왔더니 이제는 끌고 나가야 하는구나.’ 엄마가 말했어요.
But kipper had forgotten that he didn’t’ want to go to nursery school.
그러나 키퍼는 처음에 어린이집에 오고 싶어하지 않았다는 것을 잊고 있었어요.
‘I didn’t mind going. You didn’t have to pull me in.’
‘난 여기 오는걸 걱정하지 않았다고요. 엄마는 절 끌고 올 필요가 없었어요.’
Mum smiled. ‘I’m glad you liked it so much,’ she said.
엄마는 웃었어요. ‘나는 너가 그곳을 무척 좋아해서 기쁘구나.’
‘Yes,’ said Kipper. ‘I can’t wait to go again tomorrow.’
‘네, 나는 내일까지 기다릴 수가 없어요.’ 키퍼가 말했답니다.
