[ESÈ°¿ë]2´Ü°è Stage 2 More Patterned Stories A -The band
Cover/Introduction
Have you ever heard a band play? Maybe you've seen one playing on television.
It isn't easy being in a band. Before people can join a band they have to learn to play an instrument. And they have to practise hard if they want to sound good.
Do you recognize anyone in this picture? This strory is about Dad joining a band, but he didn't find playing in it very easy.

A terrible noise was coming from the front room. Everyone knew what the noise was. 'Oh no!' groaned Mum. ' Dad's at it again.'
She remembered the last time Dad played his trumpet. That time it gave her a headache.
Mum and the children looked round the edge of the door. Dad was playing his favorite tune. It was called ' Oh my papa'!
' I wish my Papa would stuff a sock in the end of his trumpet,' joked Chip.

' I don't care what you all think.' said Dad. ' I'm determined to get better at playing the trumpet. And that means I have to practise.'
The trouble was that every time he played in the house,Floppy barked. The sound of the trumpet was bad enough, but when Floppy barked at Dad as well, the noise was terrible.
' It's no good,' complained Mum.'If you're going to practise the trumpet, you simply can't do it in the house.'

In the end, Dad played in the garage. But there was a problem. The garage window was quite near the back door. Floppy barked at Dad as loudly as before, because he could see Dad through the garage window, and he could hear the sound of the trumpet through the thin walls.
' Oh dear,' sighed Mum. ' I shall be glad when Dad has had enough of this trumpet-playing craze. If he's going to practise the trumpet, he simply can't do it in the garage.'

In the end, Dad played in the shed. At first it seemed quite a good idea to practise his trumpet far away form the house. But the walls of a shed are even thinner than the walls of a garage. Floppy barked at Dad even more loudly.
The trouble was that the neighbour could hear Dad playing. So could the neighbour's little dog, and soon she joined in the barking with Floppy.
' I've never heard a noise like it,' moaned the neighbour.

Dad's trumpet craze didn't stop. He practised and practised, and he did get much better. But no matter how much better his playing became, whenever he played his trumpet guess what?
Yes, Floppy barked.
But Floppy couldn't bark when Dad played in a ban. And that's what Dad did. He joined the band, and went every week to band practice.
At first, Dad played a bit too loudly, and he played a few wrong notes. But he practised hard, and gradually he became quite good.
' It's a relief to find a place to play the trumpet, where Floppy can't bark at me,' thought Dad.

One Sunday afternoon, the band played in the park. A little stand, called a bandstand had been built. Bands, like the one Dad was in, could play there.
Everyone in the band had a smart uniform. Dad was wearing his uniform for the first time, because he had never played in a concert before.
The band began playing. People stopped to listen to the music. The trouble was Floppy went to the park. As Dad played, he saw Floppy out of the corner of his eye.
'Oh no!' thought Dad. ' Who let Floppy out? '

As the band played, Floppy barked. And how he barked!
' Go away Floppy, please!' thought Dad. But it was no good. The more the band played, the more Floppy barked. ' Someone get rid of that stupid dog,' hissed the conductor, looking sideways at Floppy.

Floppy barked and barked, and as he barked, other dogs ran up and they began to bark, too. Floppy and the other dogs round the bandstand were making a terrible noise. In the end the band couldn't play any more. It was chaos!
' It's all becuase of that big, stupid, floppy-looking dog,' said the conductor, crossly. ' It came up and began barking for no reason.'
'Whose dog is it, anyway? ' shouted someone in the band.

Poor old Dad. He had to admit that the dog was his.
'He's called Floppy.' said Dad, going red. ' He's quite well-behaved normally, but I'm afraid he always barks when I play the trumpet.'
' Well, we can't carry on playing against a chorus of barking dogs,' said the conductor. ' And if Floppy is barking at you, then there's only one thing for it. You'll have to take him home.'
Dad used his belt as a lead, and took Floppy home.
'What a bad dog,' said Dad.
But Floppy wasn't really being naughty, and he wasn't really barking at Dad, he was just joining in.
