| Cover/Introduction
Have you ever been inside a big store? Some of them have staircases that move, and when you step on to them, they carry you up or down. Moving staircases are called escalators. This story is about what happened when Mum and Dad went shopping in a big store. They both used the escalators, but things didn't go according to plan.
커다란 상점에 들어가 본적이 있나요? 어떤 곳에슨 움직이는 계단이 있는데 그곳에 올라서면, 위로 혹은 아래로 운반해 준답니다. 움직이는 계단을 우리는 에스칼레이터라고 부른답니다. 이 이야기는 엄마와 아빠가 커다란 상점에 쇼핑을 갔을때 일어난 일이예요. 그들은 에스칼레이터를 이용했는데, 계획처럼 따라 주질 않았어요.

Dad didn't like going shopping. He was all right for a little while, but then he began to get grumpy and cross. The children were relieved when Wilma's Mum said she'd look after them, while Mum and Dad went shopping by themselves.
' I don't mind shopping if I know what I'm going to buy,' said Dad. ' What irritates me is wandering around a big store like this one, just looking at things.'
Mum sighed. Looking round was what she enjoyed most.
아빠는 쇼핑가는것을 좋아하지 않았어요. 잠깐 동안은 괜찮지만, 기분이 안좋아지고 화가 나기 시작했어요. 아이들은 윌마의 엄마가 그들을 돌봐줄때는 엄마 아빠가 엄마 아빠끼리 쇼핑가는것에 안심하고 있었어요.
'내가 무엇을 사야할지 안다면 쇼핑가는 것을 싫어하지 않아' 그렇지만 나를 괴롭게 하는건 그냥 물건들을 보고 이렇게 큰 상점을 방황하는것이야'라고 아빠가 말했어요.
엄마는 한숨을 쉬었어요. 여기저기 둘러보는것은 엄마가 가장 즐겨하는것 이예요.

'We won't waste time,' said Dad,' if you go off and get what you want while I go and get what i want.Then we can meet back here. If we go together it will take twice as long.'
Mum sighed again. It was no use arguing with Dad. She agreed that she and Dad would each go off and meet later. 'See you back here,' called Mum.
Dad wanted a book. The book departement was upstairs, so he got on the escaltor, and he went up.
'우리 시간 낭비 하지 맙시다' 라고 아빠가 말했어요. '내가 내가 원하는 것을 가서 고르는 동안 당신도 가서 골라와요. 그리고 우리 여기서 다시 만납시다. 같이 돌아다닌다면 시간이 두배로 걸릴거요'
엄마가 다시 한숨을 쉬었어요. 아빠하고 말 다툼을 하는것은 소용이 없었어요. 엄마는 엄마와 아빠가 갔다가 나중에 다시 만나는것에 동의 했어요. '여기서 봐요' 라고 엄마가 말했어요.
아빠는 책을 사고 싶었어요. 도서 코너는 윗층에 있었어요, 그래서 아빠는 에스칼레이터를 타고 위로 올라갔어요.

Mum wanted a paintbrush. She wanted to paint the up-and-over door of the garge. Paintbrushes were in the hardware department and that was downstairs. Mum stepped on to the escalator, and she went down. Mum didn't really like escalators. She felt nervous when she went on them, so she always held the rail very tightly and looked down at her feet. That way she felt safer.
엄마는 페인트솔을 원했어요. 엄마는 창고의 위로 올라가는 페인트 칠을 하고 싶었어요. 페인트솔은 건축용 철물 제품파트에 있었는데 아랫층이었어요. 엄마는 에스컬레이터에 올라 섰어요 , 그리고 아랫층으로 내려 갔어요. 엄마는 에스컬레이터를 좋아하지 않았어요. 엄마는 거기에 올라서면 기분이 안좋았어요,그래서 항상 면에 레일을 꽉 잡고 그녀의 발을 내려다 보았어요. 그것이 그녀를 더 안전하게 느끼게 하거든요.

Mum found a good paintbrush and bought it. Then, Mum went up the escalator, thinking she would paint the garage door as soon as she got home.
It didn't take Dad long to choose a book. After paying for it, Dad went down to the Second Floor to wait for Mum. This was where the trouble began. Instead of waiting at the bottom of the escalator, Dad wandered off to look at some ties. ' Mum will be ages, yet,' he thought.
엄나는 아주 좋은 페인트 솔을 발견하고는 샀어요. 엄마가 집에 가는대로 창고문을 페인트칠 할것을 생각하면서 에스칼레이터에 올랐어요.
아빠가 책을 고르는데는 시간이 오래 걸리지 않았어요. 책값을 계산 한 후에 아빠는 엄마를 기다리기 위해서 이층으로 내려갔어요.이때 부터 문제가 발생했어요. 에스칼레이터 밑에서 기다리는 대신에 아빠는 타이를 보기위해서 돌아 다녔어요. '엄마가 시간이 조금 걸릴거야'라고 생각했어요.

Dad saw Mum on the escalator, going up to the Third Floor. ' Oh no!' groaned Dad. ' She's gone up to the book department to try and find me.I'd better go after her, or we'll never meet up.'
At the very top of escalator, Mum looked back and saw Dad at the bottom. ' He was waiting for me after all,' she thought, so she turned round and went back.
The trouble was as Mum went down, Dad went up.
아빠는 에스칼레이터에서 삼층으로 올라가는 것을 보았어요. ' 오 안돼! 아빠는 신음섞인 목소리로 말했어요. '그녀가 나를 찾으려고 책 코너로 올라가고 있어' 그녀를 쫓아 가는게 좋겠어, 그렇지 않으면 우린 만나지 못할거야'
에스칼레이터 위에서, 엄마가 돌아보니 아빠가 에스칼레이터 밑에 있는 아빠가 보였어요.'아빠가 나를 기다리고 있었구나'라고 생각했어요. 그리고 그녀는 뒤를 돌아서 다시 갔어요.
문제는 엄마는 아래로 , 아빠는 위로 올라간다는 것이었어요.

When Mum arrived at the bottom of the escalator, and Dad got to the top, they both became confused. Mum should have waited at the bottom, but she didn't . She got back on, thinking that Dad would wait for her at the top. But Dad thought that Mum would wait, so he got on the escalator, too. So as Dad went down, Mum went up.
엄마가 에스칼레이터 밑에 도착했을때 아빠는 위에 다달았어요, 그리고 그들은 혼란스러워 졌어요. 엄마는 밑에서 기다리고 있었어야 했지만, 그러지 않았어요. 엄마는 다시 올라타고, 아빠가 위에서 기다릴 것이라고 생각했어요. 하지만 아빠는 엄마가 기다릴 것이라고 생각했어요, 그래서 아빠도 다시 에스칼레이터에 올라 탔어요. 그래서 이번엔 아빠가 아래고, 엄마는 위로 갔어요.

It's hard to believe this, but the whole thing was about to happen all over again. Who knows how many more times Mum and Dad might have passed each other on the escalators. But Mum had a plan.
As soon as Mum got to the top, she quickly started down again, before Dad could go back up for the third time.
As Mum came down she called out to Dad. 'Stop'! she said. And luckily Dad waited for her get to the bottom.
믿기 어려웠지만 똑같은일이 반복해서 일어 났어요.누가 엄마 아빠가 에스칼레이터 위에서 얼마나 많이 서로를 스쳐 지나가야 하는지 알 수 있을까요.그런데 엄마가 계획이 있었어요.
엄마가 위에 가자마자,그녀는 빨리 다시 내려가기 시작했어요, 아빠가 다시 세번째로 되돌아 오기전에요. 엄마가 밑에 닿았을때 아빠에게 '멈춰요!' 라고 말했어요.그리고 운좋게도 아빠는 엄마가 내려오는것을 기다렸어요.

Mum thought Dad would be grumpy and cross after all the confusion, but Dad was laguhing.
' I don't know,' he said, ' we might have been going up and down on the escalator all day.'
'I'm glad the children weren't with us,' said Mum. ' What will we say when they ask us how we got on? '
' How did we get on" We can say "Up and Down'!' said Dad.
엄마는 이런 혼란후에 아빠가 기분이 언찮고 화가 날 거라 생각했어요, 그렇지만 아빠는 웃었어요.
'나도 모르겠다' 아빠가 말했어요. 우리 하루종일 에스칼레이터에서 위로갔다 아래로 갔다 왔다갔다만 한 것 같군' ' 아이들이 함게 안와서 다행이야'엄마가 말했어요. 아이들이 어떻게 탔냐고 물어보면 뭐라고 대답하지요?
'어떻게 탔냐고? ' "위로 아래로" 라고 말하면 되지 ' 하고 아빠가 말했어요.
