Have you ever been really hot? Imagine what it is like when it is so hot that all you want to do is jump into a nice cool swimming pool or spray yourself from head to toe with lovely cold water. This story tells what happened on a very, very hot Saturday afternoon one summer.
정말 더운 적이 있었나요? 너무나 더워서 시원한 수영장에 들어가거나 머리부터 발끝까지 시원한 물을 뿌리고 싶은 때를 상상해 보세요. 이 이야기는 너무나 더운 어느 토요일 오후 이야기입니다.

It was one of those really hot days. Everyone was hot.
매우 더운 날 중 어느 하루였어요. 모두들 매우 더웠어요.
It was so hot that the family sat outside and wondered what to do to get cool.
너무나 더워서 가족은 밖에 앉아 무엇을 하면 시원할지 생각했어요.
Dad sat in his deck chair and snoozed. Biff and Chip sat on the grass and couldn’t be bothered to do anything &아빠는 접는 의자에 앉아 졸았어요. Biff와 Chip은 잔디에 앉아 귀찮아서 아무 것도 하지 못하고 있었어요. - 일광욕조차도요.
‘Anyway, it’s too hot to sunbathe,’ said Chip.
‘어쨌든, 일광욕하기에 너무 더워.’ Chip이 말했어요.
Mum was the only one who was happy.
엄마는 유일하게 행복한 사람이였어요.
‘I love hot days,’ she said. ‘I’m going to lie on a rug, have a nice cool drink, read a book, and pretend I’m on a lovely beach somewhere.’
‘난 더운 날이 좋아.’ 엄마가 말했어요. ‘난 돗자리 위에 누워서 시원한 음료수를 마시며 책읽고 내가 아름다운 바닷가에 왔다고 생각할꺼야.’
‘We’re hot,’ moaned Biff and Chip.
‘우린 더워요.’ Biff와 Chip이 투덜거렸어요.
‘I’m not surprised,’ said Mum. ‘Take off your socks and trainers and go and put your swim-suits on.’
‘놀랍지 않아.’ 엄마가 말했어요. ‘양말과 신발을 벗고 가서 수영복을 입고 오렴’
‘We can’t be bothered,’ said Biff. ‘It’s too hot.’
‘귀찮아요.’ Biff가 말했어요. ‘너무 더워요.’

Suddenly Chip had an idea. ‘I’ve had a brilliant idea!’ he said, and he told Biff and Kipper what it was.
갑자기 Chip에게 좋은 생각이 떠올랐어요. ‘좋은 생각이 있어!’ 그리고 그는 Biff와 Kipper에게 그것이 무엇인지 말했어요.
The children wanted to go swimming. It seemed a very good idea to them, but not such a good idea to Dad.
아이들은 수영을 하고 싶었어요. 그들에게는 매우 좋은 생각인 듯 했어요. 하지만 아빠에게는 그다지 좋은 생각이 아니였어요.
The children were disappointed when Dad said ‘No!’
아이들은 아빠가 ‘안돼.’라고 하자 실망했어요.
‘On a day like this, everyone will be going to the swimming pool,’ he said. ‘We’ll have to sit in a hot car and get in a long queue and then the pool will be packed with people.’
‘오늘같은 날 모두들 수영장에 갈꺼야.’ 아빠가 말했어요. ‘더운 차에 앉아 있어야하고 긴 줄을 기다려야 하고 수영장은 사람들로 가득 할꺼야.’

‘I know what,’ said Mum. ‘Why not fill the paddling pool and have a splash around in that.
'좋은 생각이 있어.‘ 엄마가 말했어요. ’왜 미니풀장에 물 받아서 발장수 치고 놀지 않니.
Then you can get cool and Dad and I won’t have you moaning all afternoon about how hot you are.’
그러면 시워해질꺼고, 아빠나 나도 오후 내내 너희가 덥다고 징징거리는 걸 안 들어도 될테니까.‘
So Biff got the paddling pool, and began to blow it up with the foot pump.
그래서 Biff는 미니풀장을 가져와 펌프로 바람을 넣었어요.
Chip just watched. He was fed up because Dad wouldn’t take them to the swimming pool.
Chip은 바라만 보고 있었어요. 그는 아빠가 그들을 수영장에 데리고 가지 않아 지쳐있었어요.
‘Come on, Chip,’ called Biff. ‘I don’t see why you can’t help. It’s hard work pumping this thing up.’
‘어서, Chip.' Biff가 외쳤어요. ’네가 왜 안 돕는지 모르겠다. 바람 넣는거 힘들단 말야.‘
Even before Biff had finished, Kipper got the hose. He turned the tap on, pointed the hose at the paddling pool, and filled it with water.
Biff가 끝내기도 전에 Kipper는 호스를 가져왔어요. 그는 수도를 틀어 호스를 미니풀장에 향하게 하고 물을 채웠어요.

At least Biff managed to pump the paddling pool up until the slides were nice and firm.
마침내 Biff는 미니 풀장의 벽이 잘, 단단하게 될 때까지 바람을 채워 넣었어요.
‘You can’t play with it,’ she told Chip. ‘You haven’t helped.’
‘넌 여기서 놀 자격이 없어.’ Biff가 Chip에게 말했어요. ‘넌 안 도왔자너.’
‘No,’ agreed Kipper. ‘it’s only me and Biff allowed in the paddling pool.’
‘맞아.’ Kipper도 거들었어요. ‘나랑 Biff만이 여기서 놀 수 있어.’
‘We’ll see about that,’ said Chip. He suddenly rushed up and pushed Biff in the water, then he grabbed the hose.
‘어떻게 되는지 보자구.’ Chip이 말했어요. 그리고는 갑자기 Biff에게로 돌진해서 그녀를 물 속으로 밀었어요. 그리고는 호스를 잡았어요.

‘That’s it!’ yelled Biff. ‘I’ve had enough of you, Chip.’ She picked up a little bucket, filled it with water and threw it at Chip.
'그걸로 됐어!‘ Biff가 소리쳤어요. ’그만하면 됐어, Chip.' Biff는 작은 양동이를 들어 물을 채운 다음 Chip에게 부었어요.
Chip laughed and put his thumb over the end of the hose.
Chip은 웃은 다음, 그의 엄지손가락을 호스의 끝에 댔어요.
The water came out in a fine spray. He sent the spray all over Biff. Meanwhile Kipper tried to pull the hose away from Chip.
물은 멋지게 뿜어져 나왔어요. 그는 Biff에게 물을 뿌렸어요. 그러는 동안 Kipper는 호스를 Chip에게로부터 뺏으려고 했어요.
That’s how they had a water fight and in the end it was a lot of fun.
이것이 어떻게 그들이 물싸움을 하게 되었는지며, 결국 결국엔 정말 재미있었어요.

It was even more fun when Chip decided to squirt the hose somewhere else. He gave a terrible laugh and turned the hose on Mum!
Chip이 호스를 다른 곳에도 뿌리기로 하자 더 재밌어졌어요. 그는 큰 소리로 웃더니 호스를
엄마쪽으로 돌렸어요.
Mum got wet. ‘Aaaah,’ screamed Mum. ‘You little menace, Chip. Now I’m all wet.’
엄마가 젖었어요. ‘아아아,’ 엄마가 소리 질렀어요. ‘요 개구쟁이, Chip, 이제 나 다 젖었잖아.’
The children laughed and Kipper looked at Dad. ‘Don’t you dare. Stop it,’ said Dad.
아이들은 웃었고 Kipper는 아빠를 바라봤어요. ‘감히 나에게, 하지마.’ 아빠가 말했어요.
‘Don’t …No…You wouldn’t …These are dry trousers…Chip…!’
‘안돼, 안돼, 안 할꺼지... 이건 마른 바지란 말이지.. Chip!'
It was no good! Chip pointed the hose at Dad and…well. You can guess what he did.
아무 소용없었어요. Chip의 호스는 아빠를 향했어요. 뭐, 그리고.. 그가 어떻게 했는지는 상상할 수 있겠죠?

Everyone laughed and Dad laughed too. After all it was such a hot day that nobody minded getting wet.
모두가 웃었고 아빠도 웃었어요. 결국 너무 더워서 아무도 젖는 것에 신경쓰지 않았어요.
Dad got a bucket of water. Then he chased Chip. Chip ran away as fast as he could but Dad wasn’t going to let Chip get away.
아빠는 물이 담긴 양동이를 가져왔어요. 그리고는 Chip이 쫓았어요. Chip은 달릴 수 있는 한 가장 빨리 달렸지만 아빠는 Chip이 도망가도록 내버려두지 않았어요.
He chased Chip and Chip climbed up the step-ladder on to the roof of the shed.
아빠는 Chip을 쫓아갔고 Chip은 헛간의 지붕에 얹어져있는 사다리로 올라갔어요.
‘That was a bad move,’ called Dad. ‘I’m going to get you now!’
‘그리고 가는 것은 실수한거야.’ 아빠가 외쳤어요. ‘이제 널 잡을테다.’

Chip scrambled across the roof of the shed, trying to get away from Dad.
Chip은 아빠에게 잡히지 않도록 헛간의 지붕으로 기어올라갔어요.
He hoped he could aim the hose at Dad and give him a good soaking.
Chip은 그가 아빠에게 호스를 겨누어 아빠를 젖게 만들고 싶었어요.
‘Go on, Dad,’ laughed Biff. ‘Let him have it!’
‘어서요, 아빠.’ Biff가 웃었어요. ‘Chip이 젖게 만들어요.’
Dad swung back the bucket and threw the water at Chip. Whoosh! The trouble was, Dad’s aim wasn’t very good.
아빠는 양동이를 뒤로 휘둘러 Chip에게 물을 부었어요. 이런! 문제는 아빠가 조준을 잘못 했다는거예요.
The water swooshed out of the bucket and missed Chip altogether. It sloshed over the fence and went all over the man next door.
아빠가 뿌린 물은 Chip을 완전히 빗나갔어요. 그것은 담장을 넘어 옆집 아저씨를 맞췄어요.
‘오, 저런!’ 모두가 생각했어요.
‘Oh no!’ everyone thought. The man who lived next door wasn’t very friendly.
옆집 아저씨는 그다지 친절한 사람이 아니였어요.
He woudn’t like being soaked to the skin - even on a hot day like this.
오늘같이 더운 날에도 그 아저씨는 젖는 것을 좋아하지 않을 것 같았어요.
