This story is called ‘The baby-sitter’. Who baby-sits when your Mum and Dad go out? Do you mind if the baby-sitter is someone you don’t know, or would you rather have someone you know really well?
이 이야기의 제목은 ‘베이비씨터’예요. 자신의 엄마, 아빠가 나가면 누가 아이들을 돌보나요? 자신이 모르는 사람이 베이비씨터로 오는 것은 어떤가요? 잘 아는 사람이 오는 것이 더 좋은가요?

Mum and Dad were going out. They were going to something called a ‘Dinner-Dance’.
엄마, 아빠가 외출할 것이예요. 엄마, 아빠는 ‘저녁 댄스’라고 불리는 곳에 갈 것이예요.
‘I wonder what a dinner-dance can be?’ said Biff. ‘I bet if we danced about when we had dinner we’d get into trouble.’
‘저녁 댄스는 어떤 것인지 궁금해.’ Biff가 말했어요. ‘내 생각에 우리가 식사할 때쯤 춤을 추면 문제가 될 것 같애.’
Mum and Dad got the children to bed a little bit early. ‘I wish we didn’t have to be in bed,’ said Chip. ‘I’d like to see Mum and Dad off. I bet Mum looks nice in her new dress.’
엄마, 아빠는 아이들을 조금 더 일찍 재웠어요. ‘우리 안 자도 됐으면 좋겠어.’ Chip이 말했어요. ‘엄마, 아빠가 가는 것을 보고싶어. 분명히 엄마는 새 드레스가 잘 어울릴꺼야.’
At that moment the baby-sitter came. ‘Who did Mum say it was?’ whispered Chip.
그때, 베이비씨터가 왔어요. ‘엄마가 누구라고 했어?’ Chip이 속삭였어요.
‘I think it’s the college student who lives across the road,’ said Biff. ‘Let’s creep to the top of the stairs and see.’
‘옆길에 사는 대학생이라고 한 것 같애.’ Biff가 말했어요. 계단 위에 올라가서 보자.‘

‘You won’t have any trouble with the children,’ Mum said to the baby-sitter.
'아이들과는 아무 문제 없을꺼예요.‘ 엄마가 베이비씨터에게 말했어요.
‘They’re quite good once they’ve gone to bed and I don’t expect you’ll hear a peep out of them.’
‘애들이 잠자리에 들면 얌전하거든요. 아이들이 울거나 하지 않을꺼예요.’
‘I’m sure everything will be fine,’ said the baby-sitter. ‘I hope you have a nice time at the dinner-dance.’
‘모든 것이 잘 될꺼라 믿어요.’ 베이비씨터가 말했어요. ‘저녁 댄스에서 즐거운 시간 보내세요.’
Dad had seen Biff and Chip creeping down the stairs so he pretended to be cross. ‘
아빠는 Biff와 Chip이 계단을 내려오는 것을 보고 일부러 화가 난 척을 했어요.
‘Go back to bed,’ said Dad in a stern voice and the twins scuttled back upstairs as fast as they could.
‘침대로 돌아가,’ 아빠가 딱딱한 목소리로 말하자 쌍둥이는 재빠르게 허둥지둥 윗층으로 올라갔어요.

For a little while after Mum and Dad had gone, everything was quiet. The baby-sitter sat in a chair and did some writing.
엄마, 아빠가 가고 잠시 동안은 모든 것이 조용했어요. 베이비씨터는 의자에 앉아 무엇인가 쓰고 있었어요.
But then the children came downstairs. ‘We couldn’t’ sleep,’ they said.
그러나 그때 아이들이 아래층으로 내려왔어요. ‘잠이 안와요.’ 아이들이 말했어요.
And it was quite true, they couldn’t sleep. In fact they were all wide awake and they knew that this baby-sitter wouldn’t be strict with them and send them back upstairs.
맞아요. 아이들은 잠이 안 왔어요. 사실 아이들은 모두 깨어있었고 베이비씨터가 그렇게 엄하지 않아 자신들을 다시 올려보내지 않을 것이라는 걸 알고 있었어요.
They were right. ‘Well, you can stay up for half an hour,’ said the baby-sitter. ‘Then I want you to go straight back to bed.’
그들이 맞았어요. ‘그럼, 30분동안 여기 있으렴.’ 베이비씨터가 말했어요. ‘그리고 나서는 바로 다시 가서 자기다.’

‘Hooray,’ said the children. Kipper got his books. He wanted a story.

‘I think we should only read one story,’ said the baby-sitter, nervously looking at all the books that Kipper had brought down from his room.
‘우리 한권만 읽어야 할 것 같구나.’ Kipper가 자신의 방에서 가져온 많은 책을 보고 걱정스러운 듯 베이비씨터가 말했어요.

Half hour went by, and then an hour. The baby-sitter decided to make the children a hot drink.
30분이 지나고 한시간이 더 지났어요. 베이비씨터는 아이들에게 따뜻한 마실 것을 만들어주기로 했어요.
‘That way they might settle down and go back to bed,’ he thought.
‘그러면 아이들이 좀 조용해지고 자러 갈꺼야.’ 그가 생각했어요.
Biff was hungry. She came out to the kitchen and told the baby-sitter that Mum wouldn’t’ mind if she had something to eat. So they made a sandwich.
Biff는 배가 고팠어요. 그래서 부엌으로 가서는 베이비씨터에게 자신이 무엇을 먹어도 엄마가 상관하지 않을꺼라고 말했어요. 그리고 그들은 샌드위치를 만들었어요.
‘I suppose she knows what she’s doing,’ thought baby-sitter.
‘자신이 무엇을 하는지 알겠지.’ 베이비씨터가 생각했어요.

Biff had her sandwich and they all went back to the living room.

Chip and Kipper were still chasing each other and Chip suddenly rushed upstairs and brought down a pillow.
Chip과 Kipper는 여전히 서로 쫓기를 하다 갑자기 Chip이 윗층으로 가더니 베개를 가져왔어요.
He wanted a pillow fight. Kipper picked up a cushion and he and Chip started having a fight.
그는 베개싸움을 하고 싶었어요. Kipper는 쿠션을 들고 그들은 베개싸움을 하기 시작했어요.
It was such fun that soon, everyone joined in. Even the baby-sitter.
너무나 재밌어서 모두가 함께 했어요. 베이비씨터까지도요.

At last, the children went back to bed. ‘Thank you,’ they called as they ran upstairs.

‘You’re the best baby-sitter we’ve ever had.’ Then they jumped into be and were fast asleep almost before their heads had touched their pillows.
‘형이 지금까지 베이비씨터중에 최고예요.’ 그리고는 그들은 침대로 돌아가 그들의 머리가 베개에 닿기도 전에 빠르게 잠들었어요.
Downstairs there were things everywhere.’ What a mess!’ said the baby-sitter.
아래층에는 사방이 어질러져 있었어요. ‘지저분해라!’ 베이비씨터가 말했어요.

The babysitter and only just finished tidying up when Mum and Dad came back.

‘Did you have a nice time?’ asked the baby-sitter.
‘좋은 시간되셨나요?’ 베이비씨터가 물었어요.
‘Yes, Thanks you,’ said Mum. ‘I hope you got lots of work done.’
‘네. 고마워요.’ 엄마가 말했어요. ‘많은 일을 했길 바래요.’
‘Yes, I worked very hard,’ said the baby-sitter.
‘네. 열심히 일했어요.’ 베이비씨터가 말했어요.
‘Was everyone good?’ said Mum.
‘모두가 잘 있었죠?’ 엄마가 말했어요.

The baby-sitter left as quickly as he could. He wondered what he would say to Mum about everyone being good.
베이비씨터는 가능한 빨리 집에서 나왔어요. 그는 엄마의 아이들이 잘 있었냐는 말에 뭐라고 대답할지 생각했어요.
‘Yes and no,’ said the baby-sitter, as he went home.
‘네, 그리고 아니요.’ 집을 나오면서 그가 말했어요.
‘I hope they don’t find out too soon,’ he thought as he waved goodbye.
‘그들이 빨리 알아채지 않아야 할텐데.’ 그가 손을 흔들며 생각했어요.
