What’s the best thing about having a birthday? Is it having presents and cards or is it having a party? This story is about what happened when Kipper had a birthday party.

It was Kipper’s birthday. Can you guess how old he was?
Kipper의 생일이예요. 그가 몇 살인지 알나요?
He had lots of lovely presents and cards. There was even a present from Floppy(even though Floppy hadn’t really given him one, and it was from Mum all the time).
많은 선물과 예쁜 카드를 받았네요. Floppy가 주는 선물도 있어요. (사실 Floppy가 직접 주는 것이 아니라 항상 엄마가 주는 것이지만요.)
‘Thank you everyone,’ said Kipper, after he had finished opening his presents. ‘Now I can’t wait for Saturday.’
‘고마워요, 모두들.’ Kipper가 선물 풀기를 끝낸 다음 말했어요. ‘이제 토요일까지 기다릴 수 없겠는걸.’

He wanted a party but Mum said because it was a weekday and Kipper had just started school, it would be better to have the party on Saturday.
그는 생일파티를 하길 원했지만 엄마는 주중이고 Kipper가 이제 막 학교를 다니기 시작했기 때문에 토요일에 생일파티를 하는 것이 좋겠다고 생각했어요.
So when Kipper went to school, he took all his invitations with him and gave them to his friends.
그래서 Kipper는 학교에 초대장을 가져가서 친구들에게 나누어주었어요. 모두들 오고싶어 했어요.
Everyone wanted to come. They wanted to come to his party all right. Some of children were so excited
몇몇 아이들은 너무나 신나서 Green 선생님이 조용히, 얌전하게 있으라고 말해야했어요.

On Saturday, everyone got ready for the party. Kipper helped Biff to decorate the front room. Biff put up balloons and Kipper put a party hat on Floppy.
토요일날, 모두는 파티 준비를 했어요. Kipper는 Biff를 도와 대문을 장식했어요. Biff는 풍선을 붙이고, Kipper는 Floppy에게 파티 꼬깔을 씌웠어요.
Chip helped Mum in the kitchen because he was good at cooking. He put the filling in the sandwiches and Mum made a cake.
Chip은 요리를 잘하기 때문에 부엌에서 엄마를 도왔어요. 그는 샌드위치 속을 만들어 넣고, 엄마는 케이크를 만들었어요.
Dad did all the odd jobs that needed to be done, such as tidying up and putting the washing machines on because there were no clean clothes for next week.
아빠는 해야할 나머지 일을 했어요. 청소나 빨래같은 거요. 다음주에 입을 깨끗한 옷이 없으니까요.
‘I can’t wait for my party to start,’ said Kipper.
‘내 파티가 시작될 때까지 못 기다리겠어.’ Kipper가 말했어요.

‘Well,’ said Mum. ‘I think we’re almost ready.’
'자.‘ 엄마가 말했어요. ’거의 준비가 다 된 것 같구나.‘
‘It looks lovely,’ said Dad who was putting some soap powder into the washing machine. ‘These sandwiches look tempting.’
‘멋진데.’ 세탁기에 가루 비누를 넣으며 아빠가 말했어요. ‘샌드위치가 먹음직스럽구나.’
He leaned across and took a sandwich.
아빠는 뒤로 기대어 샌드위치를 집었어요.
Mum was cross. She smacked Dad’s wrist. ‘Stop it,’ she said, ‘You mustn’t eat the food before the party begin.’
엄마는 화가 났어요. 엄마는 아빠의 손목을 때렸어요. ‘손대지 말아요.’ 엄마가 말했어요. ‘파티가 시작되기 전까지는 먹을 수 없어요.’
Dad looked at Floppy. ‘You’d better tell him off, too,’ he laughed.
아빠는 Floppy를 바라봤어요. ‘그럼 Floppy도 꾸짖어.’ 아빠가 웃었어요.
Floppy had found a cake that had fallen on the floor. Of course, he was eating it!
Floppy는 바닥에 떨어진 케이크를 발견했어요. 당연히 그는 먹고 있었죠.

At last it was four o’clock and everyone came to the party. All Kipper’s friends brought him a present and Kipper got very excited having lots of parcels to open once more.
결국 4시가 되고 모두가 파티에 왔어요. Kipper의 모든 친구들은 선물을 가져왔고, Kipper
는 또 한번 선물을 뜯을 생각에 신이 났어요.
‘Go on in everyone,’ said Kipper. ‘It’s going to be a great party.’
‘어서와, 모두들.’ Kipper가 말했어요. ‘재밌는 파티가 될꺼야.’

The trouble was, It wasn’t as great a party as Kipper had hoped.
문제는 Kipper가 바라던 멋진 파티가 아니였다는 거예요.
You see, Dad wanted to play a game, but he had forgotten that there was a programme on the television that everyone loved watching.
보세요. 아빠는 게임을 하려고 했지만, 그 시간에 모두가 좋아하는 프로그램이 텔레비전에서 한다는 것을 까먹었네요.
‘We don’t want to watch television,’ said Dad. ‘We can all watch that any time. Let’s all play ‘Pin the tail on the donkey’.’
‘텔레비전 보지 말자.’ 아빠가 말했어요. ‘다른 시간에도 볼 수 있잖니. 다같이 ’Pin the tail on the Donkey'라는 게임을 하자.‘
Well, the children didn’t’ really want to play that game just then.
그렇지만 아이들은 그 게임을 그다지 하고 싶어하지 않았어요.
It wasn’t that they meant to be rude, but Kipper put the television on and the children watched the programme instead of playing any attention to Dad.
버릇없으려고 한 행동은 아니지만 Kipper는 텔레비전을 켰고 아이들은 아빠가 하자는 게임을 하는대신 모두 텔레비전을 봤어요.

Mum had gone outside because the deep-freeze was in the garage, and that’s where the ice-cream was stored. When Mum came back into the kitchen, it was full of bubbles and foam.
엄마는 밖으로 나갔어요. 왜냐면 급속냉동고가 차고에 있는데 그곳에 아이스크림이 있기 때문이예요. 엄마가 다시 부엌으로 돌아오자, 거품과 비누방울로 가득했어요.
‘Oh no!’ said Mum. ‘What a mess! There’s something wrong with the washing machine. It’s gone mad! There’s foam everywhere.’
‘오, 저런.’ 엄마가 말했어요. ‘지저분해라. 세탁기에 문제가 있나보네. 미쳤나봐. 사방이 다 거품이야.’

There was only one thing to do. Mum and Dad had to clean up all the mess.
할 일은 한가지 뿐이였어요. 엄마와 아빠는 어질러진 것을 모두 다 치웠어요.
‘Go and play in the garden while Mum and I clean up this mess.’ Said Dad.
‘엄마와 내가 다 치울동안 정원에 나가서 놀으렴.’ 아빠가 말했어요.
The children played with the bubbles. They chased them and popped them, and they scooped up great handfuls of foam and made themselves hair and beards with it.
아이들은 비누방울을 가지고 놀았어요. 그들은 방울을 쫓아다니고, 터뜨리고, 거품을 한 손 가득 잡아 머리며 수염등을 만들었어요.
By the back door, where Mum and Dad were sweeping it out, the children could step into the foam and be lost from sight. It was great fun.
엄마, 아빠가 쓸고 있는 뒷문에서 아이들은 거품 속으로 들어가 안 보이게 되었어요. 매우 재밌었어요.

결국, 거품을 모두 치우고, 아이들은 이번 파티가 지금까지의 파티 중 최고라고 말했어요. ‘대단한 파티였어.’ 아이들이 말했어요.
‘Well, it was thanks to Dad,’ said Mum. ‘He put the wrong sort of powder in the washing machine.’
‘자, 아빠에게 고마워하렴.’ 엄마가 말했어요. ‘아빠가 다른 세제를 세탁기에 넣었거든.’
‘Well, it all worked out in the end, but I wouldn’t like to make bubbles for a party again,’ said Dad.
‘마침내 다 잘됐군. 근데 또다시 파티를 위해 거품을 만들고 싶지 않아.’ 아빠가 말했어요.
