Sometimes, in the summer holidays, one of the grown-ups would look after all the children. Wilf and Wilma’s Dad had agreed to look after everyone and to give them all a treat at the same time.
Can you guess from this picture what he had in mind? This story is called ‘Monkey tricks,’. Who do you think gets up to tricks in this story? Do you think it’s the monkeys , or is it Kipper?
가끔 여름 방학 중, 어른 한 명이 아이들을 다 돌보는 때가 있어요. Wilf와 Wilma의 아빠는 모두를 돌보기로 하고는 모두에게 동시에 똑같이 즐거움을 주기로 했어요.
이 그림에서 아빠가 무슨 생각을 하는지 알 수 있나요?
이 이야기의 제목은 ‘Monkey tricks'예요. 이 이야기에서 누가 트릭을 할 것이라고 생각하나요? 원숭이들일까요, Kipper일까요?

The children went to the zoo. Wilf and Wilma’s Dad took them. It was a special treat.
아이들은 동물원에 갔어요. Wilf와 Wilma의 아빠가 데리고 갔답니다. 아주 특별한 즐거움이였어요.
‘I can’t wait to see the crocodiles in the crocodile house.’ Said Kipper.
‘악어집에서 악어를 보고싶어.’ Kipper가 말했어요.
‘I want to see the birds in the aviary,’ said Wilf.
‘새장에서 새를 보고싶어.’ Wilf가 말했어요.
‘I wonder if we’ll be in time to see the seals being fed,’ said Biff.
‘난 우리가 물개에게 밥을 주는 것을 때맞춰 볼 수 있을지 의문이야.’ Biff가 말했어요.
‘It’s going to be a great day,’ said Chip.
‘멋진 하루가 될꺼야.’ Chip이 말했어요.

First of all they looked at the giraffes. Wilf and Wilma’s Dad explained why the giraffes were tall.
처음으로 모두들 기린을 봤어요. Wilf와 Wilma의 아빠는 왜 기린이 키가 큰지 설명해주었어요.
‘They developed that way so that they could eat the juicy leaves at the top of tress,’ explained Dad.
‘저 동물은 나무 위의 즙이 많은 잎을 먹을 수 있도록 저렇게 발달되었단다.’ 아빠가 설명해주었어요.
‘They need a very tall house to live in,’ said Kipper.
‘아주 큰 집이 필요하겠어요.’ Kipper가 말했어요.
Dad read out the little notice that gave information about the giraffes. ‘And let’s not have any jokes about giraffes with sore throats,’ he said.
아빠는 기림에 대해 써있는 표지를 읽었어요. ‘그리고 기린의 목 가지고 장난하지 말자.’ 아빠가 말했어요.

After the giraffes, they looked at the seals. As Biff had hoped, they were in time to watch them being fed.
기린 다음으로 물개를 봤어요. Biff가 바라던대로 그들은 먹이주는 것을 때맞춰 볼 수 있었어요.
On land, the seals made funny jerky, wriggling movements, but when they dived into the water they swam easily and looked graceful.
육지에서 물개들은 우스운 구르기나 꿈틀거리는 움직임을 보이지만 물 안으로 들어가면 쉽게 수영하고 아주 멋있어 보여요.
The children loved the bright black eyes of the seals and their sniffy, twtchy, whiskery noses.
아이들은 물개의 까맣고 또랑또랑한 눈과 가만있지 못하는 수염난 코가 좋았어요.
The seals were hungry, and very clever at catching the fish that the Keeper threw them.
물개는 배가 고팠고 조련사가 던져주는 물고기를 아주 잘 받아먹었어요.
‘Seals live in the sea,’ said Wilma’s Dad. ‘But they aren’t fish. Who knows what sort of animals they are?’
‘물개는 바다에 산단다.’ Wilma의 아빠가 말했어요. ‘그렇지만 어류는 아니야. 누가 저것이 어떤 동물인지 알고 있니?’
‘They’re mammals,’ said Wilma.
‘포유류예요.’ Wilma가 말했어요.

Next they looked at the crocodiles. ‘Wow, they look huge!’ said Biff.
다음으로 악어를 봤어요. ‘우와, 크다.’ Biff가 말했어요.
The crocodiles were asleep and, at first, Kipper didn’t think they wer real. They didn’t move.
악어들이 자고 있었기 때문에 처음에 Kipper는 그것들이 진짜가 아니라고 생각했어요. 그것들은 움직이지 않았어요.
They just lay there. ‘Are you sure they’re not made of plastic?’ asked Kipper.
그냥 누워 있었어요. ‘플라스틱으로 만들어진 것이 아닌게 확실해요?’ Kipper가 물었어요.
‘They’re real, all right,’ replied Wilma’s Dad. ‘Did you know that on lnad a crocodile can run faster than you. So make sure one doesn’t chase you.’
‘진짜야.’ Wilma의 아빠가 말했어요. ‘육지에서 악어가 너보다 빨리 달릴 수 있다는 것을 아니? 그러니 절대 너를 따라오지 못하도록 하렴.’
‘I’m good at running fast,’ said Wilf. ‘Come on Crocky-Crocky-Crocodile. I’ll gve you a race.’
‘난 빨리 달리기 잘하는데.’ Wilf가 말했어요. ‘이리와, 악어야. 달리기 시합 한판 하자.’

Next they looked at the parrots, inside the parrot house. The parrots were noisy, calling and flapping their brightly-coloured wings.
다음으로 앵무새 집에서 앵무새를 봤어요. 앵무새들은 시끄러웠고, 외쳐대고 울어대고, 밝은 색의 날개를 퍼덕거렸어요.
‘It’s funny the way they look at you,’ said Chip. ‘They turn their heads on one side and watch you with one eye.’
‘저것들이 바라보는 모습이 참 우스워.’ Chip이 말했어요. ‘머리를 한쪽으로 돌리고 한쪽 눈으로 보자나’
‘There’s one looking at me now,’ said Wilf.
‘하나가 날 처다보네.’ Wilf가 말했어요.
‘They’re messy things, aren’t they?’ said Biff. She wasn’t’ sure she liked being in the parrot house.
‘지저분한 동물이죠, 안 그래요?’ Biff가 말했어요. 그녀는 앵무새 집에 있는 것이 잘하는 것인지 확신이 들지 않았어요.

It was fun when they looked at the elephants, because one of them was having it’s tusk scrubbed. It seemed to like being cleaned.
코끼리를 보는 것은 재밌었어요. 왜냐면 그 중 하나가 엄니를 문지르고 있었거든요. 깨끗한 것을 좋아하는 것 같았어요.
The elephants were big animals. The children were amazed at how big they were. ‘Look at their huge ears, and their massive legs,’ said Chip.
코끼리는 큰 동물이예요. 아이들은 얼마나 큰가에 대해 놀랐어요. ‘저 큰 귀를 봐. 그리고 큰 다리도.’ Chip이 말했어요.
The elephant moved its truck gently towards Biff. ‘Do you think it can smell with its trunk?’ asked Biff.
코끼리들은 코를 Biff쪽으로 움직였어요. ‘코로 냄새를 맡을 수 있을까?’ Biff가 물었어요.
‘I think so,’ said Wilma’s Dad.
‘그럴걸.’ Wilma의 아빠가 말했어요.
‘It’ll have a nasty shock if it smells you,’ jocked Chip.
‘네 냄새를 맡으면 안좋은 충격을 받을꺼야.’ Chip이 농담했어요.
‘Watch it!’ said Biff.
‘봐봐.’ Biff가 말했어요.

The monkeys were quiet to the elephant enclosure, so next, they looked at the monkeys.
원숭이들은 코끼리 우리에서 가까운 곳에 있었어요. 그래서 다음으로 원숭이들을 봤답니다.
The monkeys were funny, the way they behaved.
원숭이들이 하는 행동이 우스웠어요.
‘I bet there’s not much difference between these monkeys and Mrs May’s class at school,’ laughed Wilma’s Dad.
‘이 원숭이들과 Mrs May의 교실에서의 행동에 별 차이가 없는 것 같아.’ Wilma의 아빠가 웃었어요.
One of the monkeys started to make a face at Chip. ‘Look at that one,’ said Biff.
원숭이 한 마리가 Chip을 향해 얼굴을 찌푸리기 시작했어요. ‘저것좀 봐.’ Biff가 말했어요.
‘He reminds me of someone we know.’
‘우리가 알고 있는 누구를 생각하게 하는걸.’
‘Talking of Kipper,’ said Chip. ‘Where is he? I haven’t seen him for a while.’
‘Kipper에 대해 말하는구나.’ Chip이 말했어요. ‘어딨지? 한참 못봤네.’

Suddenly, Wilma’s Dad realized that he hadn’t seen Kipper for some time either.
갑자기 Wilma의 아빠도 Kipper를 보지 못했다는 것을 알아차렸어요.
‘I hope he hasn’t’ wondered off,’ he said.
‘그가 돌아다니지 않고 있어야 하는데.’ 그가 말했어요.
The children were quite worried. They looked for Kipper and Chip began to call his name. That made all the monkeys chatter in their cage.
아이들은 걱정했어요. 그들은 Kipper를 찾았어요. 그리고 Chip은 그의 이름을 부르기 시작했어요. 그것이 철장 안의 원숭이들을 떠들게 했어요. ‘
‘He can’t be lost,’ said Biff. ‘He was with us when we looked at the elephants.’
‘잃어버렸을리 없어요.’ Wilma가 말했어요. ‘코끼리를 볼 때 우리와 함께 있었자나요.’
‘He’s a little monkey if he’s gone off by himself,’ said Wilma’s Dad.
‘혼자 갔다면 걔는 작은 원숭이야.’ 아빠가 말했어요.

Now you know why this story is called ‘Monkey tricks’. And you know what time monkey trick is, and who played it.
이제 이 이야기가 왜 ‘Monkey tricks'인지 알겠죠. 그리고 원숭이 장난이 무엇인지 누가 그랬는지도요.
Everyone laughed when they saw that Kipper looked like a monkey in his monkey mask.
모두들 Kipper가 원숭이 가면을 쓰고 원숭이처럼 보이자 그를 보고 웃었어요.
‘I was right when I said you were a little monkey,’ laughed Wilma’s Dad.
‘내가 작은 널 작은 원숭이라고 한 것이 맞구나.’ Wilma의 아빠가 웃었어요.
‘I just wish I had a camera to take a picture of your monkey tricks.’
‘너의 원숭이 장난을 찍어놀 수 있도록 카메라가 있었으면 좋겠다.’
