Biff, Chip, Kipper were playing with their friends on the patch of ground near their house when a fire engine went by.
Biff, Chip, Kipper가 친구들과 집 근처 공터에서 놀고 있을 때 소방차가 지나갔어요.
The fire engine was sounding its siren and it went past at a tremendous speed. The children were quite started. They had never seen a fire engine racing to a fire before.
소방차는 사이렌을 울리며 엄청난 속도로 지나갔어요. 아이들은 좀 놀랐어요. 아이들은 한번도 소방차가 불을 끄러 가는 것을 전에 본 적이 없거든요.
‘I wonder where the fire is,’ said Chip. ‘It can’t be very far away or the fire engine would have gone alone the main road.’
‘불이 어디서 났는지 궁금한걸.’ Chip이 말했어요. ‘불이 난 곳이 그렇게 멀지는 않을꺼야. 아니면 큰도로로 소방차가 지나갔겠지.’
‘I want to be a fireman when I grow up,’ said Kipper.
‘난 커서 소방대원이 되고 싶어.’ Kipper가 말했어요.

There was a fire just down the road. Biff saw smoke first.
불은 바로 길 아래였어요. Biff가 먼저 연기를 봤어요.
‘I can see smoke,’ said Biff, ‘and it’s not far away.’
‘연기가 보여.’ Biff가 말했어요. ‘그리고 여기서 멀지 않아.’
Everyone ran to see what was happening. The neighbours rushed out of their houses and gardens and ran along the road.
모두가 달려가 무슨 일이 있는지 봤어요. 이웃 사람들이 집과 정원에서 거리로 뛰어나왔어요.
‘Come on,’ they shouted. ‘There’s a fire.’
‘이리와요!’ 그들이 소리쳤어요. ‘불이 났어요.’
‘Can we come , too?’ called Chip.
‘우리도 가도 될까요?’ Chip이 소리쳤어요.
‘Yes,’ shouted a neighbour, ‘but stay close to me.’
‘그래,’ 이웃 사람이 소리쳤어요. ‘그렇지만 내 근처에 있어라.’

‘Get back,’ said a fireman as everyone reached the place where the fire was.
'뒤로 물러서세요.‘ 모두가 불이 난 곳에 도착하자, 소방대원이 말했어요.
A barn was on fire. It was an old barn and it hadn’t been used for a long time.
헛간에 불이 났어요. 오랫동안 사용되지 않은 오래된 헛간이였어요.
There were flames coming out of the roof. ‘I want everyone to keep well back,’ repeated the fireman.
지붕으로 불길이 솟아 올랐어요.
‘We’ll soon have the fire out, but I don’t want anyone getting too close.’
‘모두들 뒤로 물러서세요.’ 소방대원이 다시 한번 말했어요. ‘곧 불을 끄겠지만, 누구도 근처로 가지 마세요.’
‘I’ve never seen a fire in real life before,’ said Biff. ‘I feel quite frightened.’
‘난 불이 난 걸 실제로 본 것은 처음이야.’ Biff가 말했어요. ‘좀 무서운걸.’
‘I know,’ said Kipper. ‘I’m not sure if I want to be a fireman any more.’
‘나도 알아.’ Kipper가 말했어요. ‘더이상 내가 정말 소방대원이 하고 싶은지 잘 모르겠어.’

The fireman began to move at ten times the speed of normal people. They pushed up the shutters on the side of the fire engine and pulled out a hose.
소방대원들은 보통 사람의 열 배의 빠르기로 움직이기 시작했어요. 그들은 소방차의 한쪽 문을 여러 호스를 꺼냈어요.
‘Where do they get the water from?’ asked Kipper.
‘물은 어디서 나오지?’ Kipper가 물었어요.
‘They carry some in big tanks on the fire engine,’ said Chip. ‘I expect they will use that.’
‘소방차에 큰 탱크를 가지고 다녀.’ Chip이 말했어요. ‘내 생각엔 그것을 이용할 것 같애.’
Suddenly al ittle dog ran to the barn. She went to a window and she barked and barked.
갑자기 작은 개 한 마리가 헛간으로 뛰어들어갔어요. 그 개는 창문으로 들어가서 짖어댔어요.
‘Look at the little dog barking at the window,’ said Biff. ‘I wonder why she’s behaving like that.’
‘창문에서 짖어대는 저 개좀 봐.’ Biff가 말했어요. ‘저 개가 왜 저러는지 모르겠는걸.’
‘I don’t know,’ said Chip. ‘But there’s something wrong.’
‘나도 몰라.’ Chip이 말했어요. ‘그렇지만 뭔가 잘못된거 같아.’

Suddenly Floppy ran to the barn. He didn’t stop. With one huge leap, he jumped in the window.
갑자기 Floppy가 헛간으로 달려갔어요. 그는 멈추지 않았어요. 크게 뛰어서 창문으로 들어갔어요.
His back feet scrambled and scrabbled against the window sill for a second, then he jumped down inside the barn.
뒷다리가 창문턱에 잠깐 긁혔지만, 헛간 안으로 뛰어 들어갔어요.
‘Floppy! Come back!’ yelled the children. They ran forward but the fireman stopped them and told them to go back.
'Floppy, 돌아와!‘ 아이들이 소리쳤어요. 아이들이 앞으로 달려갔지만 소방대원이 그들을 멈추며 뒤로 돌아가라고 말했어요.
‘But our dog’s gone inside,’ said Kipper. ‘he jumped in through that window.’
‘하지만 우리 개가 안으로 들어갔단 말예요.' Kipper가 말했어요. ’창문을 넘어 들어갔다고요.‘
‘I can’t think why he would do a stupid thing like that,’ sid Biff.
‘난 왜 그가 그렇게 바보같은 행동을 했는지 모르겠어.’ Biff가 말했어요.
‘Oh dear, he might be burned in there.’
‘오 저런, 어쩜 저 안에서 불에 댈지도 몰라.’

A fireman made the children stand well back. ‘Keep right out of the way,’ he said.
소방대원은 아이들이 뒤에 서있도록 했어요. ‘멀리 떨어져 있어라.’그가 말했어요.
‘Get Floppy,’ said Chip. ‘Please get him out. He doesn’t usually do mad things like this.’
‘Floppy를 구해주세요.’ Chip이 말했어요. ‘제발 그를 구해주세요. 원래는 저렇게 이상한 행동을 하지 않아요.’
‘Don’t worry ‘ said the fireman. ‘Look, the hoses are working now so the fire will soon be out. We’ll get your dog out safe and sound, you’ll see.’
‘걱정하지 마라.’ 소방대원이 말했어요. ‘봐, 지금 호스가 작동되고 있고, 곧 불을 끌꺼야. 너희 개도 안전하게 구해줄 것이고. 지켜보렴.’
‘Oh, I hope so,’ said Biff.
‘제발 그러길 바래요.’ Biff가 말했어요.
Meanwhile, the fireman pushed the door down and the children held their breath, waiting to see if Floppy was all right.
그러는 동안, 소방대원은 문을 부수고, 아이들은 Floppy가 무사하기만을 바라며 숨을 죽이고 있었어요.

For a few seconds it was hard to see anything because there was a lot of smoke, but then Floppy ran out of the barn. He had some puppies with him.
몇 초후, 연기 때문에 모든 것이 보기 어려웠지만, Floppy가 헛간에서 나왔어요. 그는 강아지들을 데리고 나왔어요.
They were quite young puppies and they looked just like the little dog that Biff was holding in her arms.
강아지들은 Biff가 안고 있는 개만큼 어린 강아지였어요.
‘So that’s why Floppy went into the fire,’ gasped Kipper. ‘He went to rescue those little puppies.’
‘Floppy가 불길로 뛰어든 이유가 바로 이것이구나.’ Kipper가 말했어요. ‘저 작은 강아지들을 구하러 간것이였어.’
The little dog wriggled in Biff’s arms and began to bark excitedly.
Biff의 팔에 있던 강아지도 꿈틀거리더니, 신나게 짖기 시작했어요.
‘Put her down, Biff,’ said Chip. ‘She wants to see her puppies to make sure they’re all right.’
‘Biff, 강아지를 내려놔.’ Chip이 말했어요. ‘자기 개가 안전한지 보고 싶은거야.’
And of course, the puppies were all right. They followed Floppy out into the sunshine as if being rescued from a burning barn was something that happened every day of the week.
그리고 당연히, 강아지들은 무사했어요. 그들은 불이 난 헛간에서 구하는 일이 매일 있는 듯, Floppy를 따라 햇빛으로 나왔어요.

Everyone looked at Floppy and cheered. The children crowded round him, and gave him lots of hugs and pats.
모두들 Floppy를 보고 웃었어요. 아이들은 그를 둘러싸고는 안아주고, 칭찬해줬어요.
‘Well, I’ve never seen anything like that before,’ said the fire chief. ‘I think the dog’s a hero.’
‘난 이런 것을 전에 본적이 없구나.’ 소방대장이 말했어요. ‘내 생각엔 저 개가 영웅이다.’
The little white dog and her puppies thought Floppy was a hero, too.l
하얀 작은 개와 강아지들도 Floppy가 영웅이라고 생각했어요.
Floppy sat and wagged his tail. He looked really pleased with himself.
Floppy는 앉아서 꼬리를 흔들었어요. 매우 만족스러워 보였어요.
‘What a good dog!’ everyone said.
‘훌륭한 강아지야!’ 모두가 말했어요.

For the next few days everyone made a fuss of Floppy and he spent a lot of time with the little white dog and her puppies.
그 후로 몇 일간 모두들 Floppy에 관해 이야기했고, Floppy는 하얀 작은 개와 강아지들과 많은 시간을 보냈어요.
There was a story about Floppy’s brave rescue in the newspaper. It had a headline which said, ‘What a hero!’
신문에 Floppy의 용감한 구출에 관한 이야기도 실렸어요. ‘대단한 영웅’이란 제목도 실렸어요.
As for the children, they couldn’t help wondering why the little white dog looked so fondly at Floppy, and how Floppy knew the little puppies were in the barn in the first place.
아이들은 왜 하얀 작은 개가 Floppy를 애정이 담긴 눈빛으로 보는지, 또 Floppy는 어떻게 한번에 강아지들이 헛간에 있었는지 알았는지 궁금했어요.
But perhaps we’d better not ask too many questions about that!
하지만 그것에 관해서는 더 이상 묻지 않는게 좋겠죠? |
