This story is called ‘The dream.’ It’s all about Biff and what happened when she couldn’t sleep.
이 이야기의 제목은 ‘꿈’이에요. Biff가 잠 못 들던 어느 때에 관한 이야기에요.
1. Do you ever dream? Can you remember a dream you have had? Was it a nice dream?
여러분도 꿈을 꾸나요? 기억나는 꿈이 있나요? 행복한 꿈이었나요?
2. Some dreams are good dreams, some are bad dreams. Some dreams can be funny. Do you know what we call bad dreams?
어떤 꿈들은 행복한 꿈들이고, 어떤 꿈들은 나쁜 꿈들이지요. 어떤 꿈들은 웃기기도 해요.
나쁨 꿈들을 뭐라고 부르는지 아세요?
3. Have you ever had a nightmare? (Everyone has a nightmare at some time or other.)
여러분도 악몽을 꾼 적이 있나요? (모두들 한 두번 쯤은 악몽을 꿔 본 적이 있을 거에요.)

Biff couldn’t sleep. She lay in bed for ages and ages. At last she went downstairs to find Mum and Dad.
‘I can’t sleep,’ she said.
‘Go and snuggle back in and try thinking of something nice,’ said Biff’s mum.
‘Or try counting sheep.’
‘Well I’ll tell you a story,’ said Biff’s dad.
And he picked up a book that Chip had brought home from school.
Biff는 잠이 잘 오지 않았어요. 꽤 오랜 시간 동안 침대 안에 누워있었어요. 결국은 아래층으로 내려가 엄마와 아빠에게로 갔어요.
‘잠이 안 와요,’ 그녀가 말했어요.
‘가서 좀 더 뒤척거려보고 좋은 일을 떠올려 보렴,’ Biff의 엄마가 말했어요.
‘아니면, 양을 세어보던가.’
‘음, 내가 이야기 하나 해주마,’ Biff의 아빠가 말했어요.
그리고는 Chip이 학교에서 빌려온 책을 한 권 집었어요.

The book was called, ‘The Dragon stories’. Dad told her a story from the book. The story was about a dragon. Some of the stories in the book were about friendly dragons, but not this one. The story was about a very unfriendly dragon.
In fact, it was a really terrible dragon with horrid scales and sharp claws, and eyes that glowed, and a mouth that breathed fire.
Biff’s dad told the story so well that Biff was quite scared.
‘I don’t like dragons,’ said Biff.
책 제목은 ‘용 이야기’ 였어요. 아빠는 책 속의 이야기들 중 하나를 골라 읽어줬어요. 그 이야기는 용에 관한 이야기였어요. 책에 등장하는 용들 중 어떤 것들을 친근하기도 하지만,
이 이야기에 등장하는 용은 그렇지 않았어요. 매우 무서운 용에 관한 이야기였어요.
자세히 말하자면, 징그러운 비늘과 날카로운 발톱, 불타는 눈과 입에서 불꽃을 내뿜는 아주 무시무시한 용이였어요.
Biff의 아빠는 너무 실감나게 이야기를 해서 Biff는 제법 겁이 났어요.

Well, the story made Biff quite sleepy, so Mum took her back to bed and she fell asleep straight away. But as soon as she was asleep, Biff dreamed about the dragon. And it was the dragon in her dad’s story.
Somehow Biff knew that the dragon was coming to get her and that she would have to fight it. ‘I don’t like dragons,’ thought Biff, ‘and this particular dragon looks very fierce.’
이야기를 듣다가 Biff는 졸리기 시작했어요, 그래서 엄마는 그녀를 침대로 데려가고 Biff는 곧장 잠이 들었어요. 하지만, 잠이 들자마자 Biff는 용에 관한 꿈을 꾸기 시작했어요. 아빠가 해준 이야기 속에 등장하는 바로 그 용이었어요.
Biff는 용이 그녀를 잡으러 오고, 그녀가 용에 맞서 싸워야 한다는 것을 어느 정도 짐작하고 있었어요. ‘난 용이 싫어,’ Biff가 생각했어요. ‘특히 이 용은 무척 사나워 보이는걸.’

As the dragon came closer, Biff could smell the smoke and feel the heat from the flames it puffed out from its great round nostrils. Its claws looked long and sharp, and its scales were leathery and green.
It was a nasty dragon and Biff got herself ready to fight it.
‘I don’t think I’ll be much good as this,’ thought Biff. ‘This sword doesn’t look as if it could stab a squashy tomato, let alone a nasty old dragon with a tough leathery skin.’
The dragon was getting closer. ‘Oh help,’ thought Biff. ‘I don’t want to fight this dragon!’
용이 다가오자 Biff는 연기 냄새와 큰 콧구멍으로 내뿜는 불꽃의 열기를 느낄 수 있었어요.
발톱은 매우 길고 날카로웠으며, 피부는 질긴 초록 가죽이었어요.
Biff는 그 사나운 용과 싸울 준비를 했어요.
‘난 이 처럼 잘 싸울 수 있을 것 같지 않은데,’ Biff는 생각했어요. ‘이 검은 두꺼운 가죽으로 뒤덮인 사나운 용은 커녕, 물컹한 토마토도 찌르지 못할 것 같군’
용은 점점 다가왔어요. ‘살려줘,’ Biff는 생각했어요. ‘정말 이 용과 싸우고 싶지 않아!’

The dragon came right up to Biff. She could see its horrid, gleaming eyes. It was a very nasty dragon. ‘Ugh!’ said Biff. ‘What a horrid dragon. Its eyes are yellow, its tongue is long, its claws are sharp, and it doesn’t like me.’
Suddenly the dragon sprang towards Biff with a terrible roar. ‘Growl, roar, grrrraaaaoooomph!’ it went.
용은 Biff를 향해 성큼 다가왔어요. 그녀는 징그럽게 이글거리는 눈을 볼 수 있었어요. 정말 사나운 용이었어요. ‘윽!’ Biff가 말했어요. ‘정말 징그러운 용이군. 눈은 노란색이고 혀는 길고, 손톱은 날카롭고, 더군다나 날 경계하고 있어.’
갑자기 용이 무서운 소리를 내며 Biff를 향해 돌진해왔어요. ‘으르렁, 어흥!!!’ 하고 외쳤어요.

‘I don’t want to fight this dragon,’ said Biff, ‘but it looks as if I’ll have to.’
‘Grrrrraaaaaoooooooumph,’ went the dragon. Biff had to fight it. ‘Bang, crack, bonk,’ went Biff’s sword. ‘Grrrumppph, yeroooough,’ went the dragon.
‘Go away, dragon,’ yelled Biff. ‘You’re bigger than me, and you ought to get your toenails cut.’ ‘Grrroooough,’ went the dragon.
‘Take that!’ cried Biff. And she gave the dragon a mighty bonk on the head with her sword. ‘Merraaoouch,’ roared the dragon.
‘이 용이랑 싸우고 싶지 않아,’ Biff가 말했어요, ‘하지만 싸울 수 밖에 없는 것 같군,’
‘어….흥,’ 하고 용이 소리냈어요. Biff는 싸워야 했어요. ‘쨍, 통 쾅!’ Biff는 검을 휘둘렀어요.
용은 ‘어..흥, 으르…렁,’ 거렸어요.
‘저리 가버려 이 용아,’ Biff가 외쳤어요. ‘나보다 덩치가 크긴 하지만, 너의 발톱을 잘라벌리꺼야,’ 용은 ‘크르렁..’ 거렸어요.
‘자 맛 좀 봐라!’ Biff가 외쳤어요. 그리고는 검으로 용의 머리를 한 대 내리쳤어요. ‘아..우..’ 하고 용이 울부짖었어요.

Biff woke up.
‘That’s it,’ she yelled, struggling out of the dream. ‘I’m going to tell Dad. After all, it’s his fault I’m having this dream in the first place.’
Biff went downstairs, but the memory of the dragon was still chasing after her. By the time she got to the bottom of the stairs the dragon had almost faded away, and soon it was gone altogether.
‘Nasty, stupid old dragon,’ complained Biff to her dad. ‘I don’t like dragons.’
Biff가 잠에서 깨어났어요.
‘꿈이었군,’ 그녀는 꿈에서 깨면서 외쳤어요. ‘아빠에게 말해줘야겠어. 결국 이런 꿈을 꾸게 된 건 아빠 책임이 제일 크니까.’
Biff는 아래층으로 내려갔지만, 여전히 용이 뒤쫓아오는 것 같은 생각이 들었어요. 계단을 다 내려올 때쯤 에는 용의 환영이 점점 사라지더니 곧 완전히 사라져버렸어요.
‘어리석고 못된 늙은 용 같으니라구,’ 하고 Biff는 아빠에게 투덜댔어요. ‘전 용이 정말 싫어요.’

‘It was silly of Dad to tell you such a frightening story,’ said Mum. ‘I’ll tell you what, Dad can make you a hot drink while I read you a really nice story. Then, when you go to sleep, you can have a much nicer dream together.’
Biff sat close to Mum and Mum told her a story. The story was about a dolphin. It was a friendly dolphin who used to play tricks on other dolphins.
‘I like dolphins,’ said Biff. ‘Dolphins are friendly.’
‘아빠가 그런 무서운 이야기를 하는 게 아니었어,’ 엄마가 말했어요. ‘어디보자, 내가 너에게 정말 재미있는 이야기를 들려주는 동안 아빠는 따뜻한 마실 것을 가져오는게 좋겠구나. 그럼 너도 훨씬 좋은 꿈을 꿀 수 있을꺼야. Biff는 엄마 가까이 앉았고, 엄마는 Biff에게 이야기를 들려주었어요. 돌고래에 관한 이야기였어요. 다른 돌고래들과 장난을 치는 아주 친근한 돌고래에 관한 이야기였어요. ‘전 돌고래가 좋아요,’ Biff가 말했어요. ‘돌고래는 아주 다정해요.’
