Have you ever been given a present that you really didn’t expect? When we get something that we don’t know about, we call it a surprise. Biff and Chip had a surprise. It was a go-kart that Mum and Dad made for them. But something happened that Mum and Dad didn’t expect.
That was a surprise, too. But it was a surprise they didn’t want. Biff and Chip wouldn’t share the go-kart properly. They couldn’t agree how to take turns. And that led to some more surprises.
여러분들은 혹시 기대도 하지 않았는데 어떤 선물을 갑자기 받아본 경험이 있나요? 기대도 하지 않았는데 갑자기 어떤 일이 닥치면 우리는 ‘깜짝 놀랐다’고 표현을 하지요. Biff와 Chip은 깜짝 놀랄만한 선물을 받게 된답니다. 그것은 바로 엄마와 아빠가 만들어준 go-kart, 즉 경주용 소형 수레였어요.
그런데, 엄마 아빠도 미처 예상하지 못했던 일이 발생하고 말았어요.
그것 역시 ‘깜짝 놀랄 만한 일’이라고 할 수 있지만 , 별로 달갑지 않은 일이었어요. Biff와 Chip은 go-kart를 사이 좋게 나눠 타려고 하지않았어요. 둘은 어떤 방식으로 번갈아 타면 좋을 지에 대하여 타협할 수가 없었어요. 그리고 그것으로 인해 갖가지 ‘깜짝 놀랄 만한 일’들이 일어나게 됩니다.

Dad made a go-kart. It was a really good go-kart. It had a proper steering wheel and a smart red body. Best of all, it had pedals you could turn to make it go along.
Dad made the go-kart in the evenings after Biff and Chip had gone to bed. Mum and Dad wanted it to be a surprise for Biff and Chip. Mum had painted the go-kart and made a padded seat for it. It was a lovely go-kart. Biff and Chip were really pleased with it.
아빠는 go-kart를 만들었어요, 정말 훌륭한 go-kart 였지요. 제대로 작동하는 운전대도 있었구요, 단단하게 만들어진 몸체는 빨간색이에요. 무엇보다도 페달이 있어 어디든 운전하고 다닐 수 있어서 좋았어요.
아빠는 Biff와 Chip이 잠든 후 매일 밤 마다 go-kart를 만들었었어요. 엄마와 아빠는 Biff와 Chip에게 깜짝 선물을 해주고 싶었거든요. 엄마는 go-kart에 페인트를 칠하고 푹신한 의자를 만들었어요. 정말 근사한 go-kart였어요. Biff와 Chip은 뛸 듯이 기뻤답니다.

The trouble with the go-kart was that Biff and Chip could never agree whose turn it was.
‘It’s my turn for a go,’ Biff would shout.
‘You had it last time,’ Chip would yell. ‘It’s my go first this time.’
‘I don’t know,’ said Dad, ‘I think Biff and Chip enjoy arguing about whose turn it is more than riding in the go-kart.’
One afternoon Biff wanted the go-kart and, of course, Chip wanted the go-kart. They both ran up to the go-kart to try and get it first.
문제는 Biff와 Chip이 go-kart를 타는 순서를 정하는 것에서 발생했어요.
‘내가 탈 차례야,’ Biff가 소리쳤어요.
‘방금 네가 탔잖아,’ Chip 이 소리쳤어요. ‘이번엔 내가 먼저 탈 차례야.’
‘이상하네,’ 아빠가 말했어요. ‘마치 Biff와 Chip은 go-kart를 타는 것 보다 차례를 정하느라 싸우는 것을 더 즐기는 것 같이 보이는군’
어느날 오후 Biff가 go-kart를 타려고 하는데, 역시나 Chip도 go-kart를 타고 싶어했어요.
둘은 go-kart를 향해 마구 달려가 먼저 타려고 했어요.

Biff and Chip both got to the go-kart at the same time. Biff wanted a go, and Chip wanted a go. ‘Get out,’ shouted Chip. ‘I got here first and it’s my turn for a go.’
‘I said I was going in the go-kart first,’ cried Biff. ‘It was my idea. And it’s my turn.’
Biff와 Chip 둘 다 동시에 go-kart를 타고자 했어요. Biff도 타고 싶었고, Chip도 타고 싶어했어요. ‘나와!’ Chip이 소리쳤어요. ‘내가 먼저 찜 했으니까 내 차례야.’ ‘내가 먼저 탈 거라고 분명히 얘기 했잖아,’ Biff가 외쳤어요. ‘타겠다는 생각을 내가 먼저 한 거니까 내 차례야!’

‘It’s not fair,’ shouted Chip. ‘I know it’s my turn. You had the go-kart this morning for ages and ages.’
‘You had it too,’ said Biff angrily. ‘You had it after me, so now it’s my turn.’
Chip was so cross that he tried to push Biff away from the go-kart. Biff grabbed hold of Chip. Then Biff pushed and Chip pulled.
In the end they both fell to the ground.
‘너무 불공평해!’ Chip이 소리쳤어요. ‘이젠 내 차례라구. 넌 오늘 아침에 충분히 많이 탔잖아.’
‘너도 탔잖아,’ Biff가 화를 내며 말했어요. ‘내가 타고 난 후에 니가 탔었잖아, 그러니까 이제는 내 차례야.’
Chip은 너무 화가 난 나머지 Biff를 go-kart에서 밀어버리려고 했어요. Biff는 Chip을 붙들고 놔주지 않았어요. Biff와 Chip은 서로 밀고 당겼어요.
결국 둘 다 땅에 떨어지고 말았어요.

They had fight. Chip tried to sit on top of Biff and Biff tried to sit on top of Chip. It wasn’t really a very bad fight. It was just one of those fights that brothers and sisters sometimes have when each one thinks that something isn’t fair.
And the fight didn’t last long. Mum and Dad saw what was happening and ran out to stop it.
싸움이 벌어졌어요. Chip은 Biff를 이기려고 했고, Biff는 Chip을 이기려고 했어요.
크게 심각한 싸움은 아니었어요. 흔히 형제들끼리 서로 생각이 틀릴 때에 잘 일어나는 싸움의 한 종류였어요. 그리고 싸움이 오래 가지 않았어요. 엄마와 아빠가 싸움을 목격하고 그들을 말리려고 뛰어나왔어요.

‘Stop it,’ said Dad.

‘It’s all Chip’s fault,’ said Biff. ‘He started it.’
‘Oh no I didn’t,’ said Chip. ‘Biff started it. She wouldn’t let me have my turn on the go-kart.’
‘It’s not fair,’ said Biff.
‘It’s not fair,’ said Chip.
‘그만 해!,’ 아빠가 말했어요.
‘그만 해!’ 엄마가 말했어요.
‘다 Chip 때문이에요,’ Biff가 말했어요. ‘재가 먼저 시작했어요.’
‘아니에요, 제가 안그랬어요.’ Chip이 말했어요. ‘Biff이 먼저 시작했어요. 저에게 go-kart를 탈 수 있는 기회 조차 주지 않았어요.’
‘이건 불공평해요,’ Biff가 말했어요.

Dad was cross with Biff and Chip. ‘I don’t like to see you two fighting like this,’ he said. ‘There are lots of ways to decide whose go it is first, and there are lots of ways of being fair about sharing something. I’m going to put the go-kart in the shed for the rest of the week until you both learn to share.’
Dad put the go-kart away.
아빠는 Biff와 Chip에게 화가 났어요. ‘너희 둘 이렇게 싸우는 거 보기 싫구나,’ 그가 말했어요. ‘차례를 정하는 것에 여러 가지 방법들이 있고, 또 물건을 공평하게 나눠 쓰는 방법에도 여러 가지가 있어. 너희 둘 다 나눠 사용하는 것에 대해서 깨달을 때까지 go-kart는 이번 주가 지날 때까지 창고 안에 넣어둘 예정이다.’
아빠는 go-kart를 치워버렸어요.

Mum and Dad decided that Biff and Chip wouldn’t quarrel if there was something else for them to play with so they made a swing.
