Chip wanted new trainers. You can see what was happening to his old pair. The sole was coming off.

Every time he walked the sole went flap, flap, flap!

¡®Just look at Chip¡¯s trainers,¡¯ said Mum. ¡®They¡¯re worn out. We shall just have to get him a new pair. Go and wash your feet, Chip, and put on some clean stocks. We¡¯ll go and buy you a new pair of trainers.¡¯

In the shoe shop Chip liked all the pairs of trainers, but he liked this pair best of all.

¡®You can¡¯t have those, they¡¯re too expensive,¡¯ said Mum.

On the way home Chip saw some of his friends playing in the park.

¡®Please may I go and talk to Wilf and Wilma?¡¯ asked Chip.

¡®Yes,¡¯ said Mum. ¡®Dad and I have to go to one more shop. Go and talk to Wilf and Wilma and then come straight home.¡¯

There were some other children playing in the park. They were sliding down a muddy slope. Wilf and Wilam ran overand began to slide down the slope as well.

Chip went to play and in no time at all he was sliding down the muddy slope,too.

One of the children had a football. ¡®Come on!¡¯ someone yelled.

¡®Le¡¯ts have a kick around.¡¯ Chip had forgotten that he had on his expensive new trainers and he ran over the muddy grass after the football.

¡®Watch this, then,¡¯ shouted Chip, getting the ball. ¡®Who says I can¡¯t!¡¯ He raced across with the ball and the trainers got muddy.

After a little while, everyone felt hot and tired. ¡®I¡¯ve had enough,¡¯ sighed Wilma. ¡®Let¡¯s go and play on the rope swing down by the stream.¡¯

Chip didn¡¯t rememeber that he had on his expensive new trainers until his foot slipped off a big stone into the stream and the trainers got wet.

Before Chip went home he cleaned some of the mud off his trainers with grass. Even so, the trainers still looked very messy and Chip knew that he would get into trouble.

As Chip washed the trainers he felt really sorry that he¡¯d got them messy.
