The problem that faced Dad and the twins was how to pick the last apple on the tree. It was a beautiful-looking apple, but it was just too high to reach.

¡®It¡¯s a funny thing,¡¯ said Dad. ¡®But the very last apple on this tree is the biggest and the most juicy-looking of all, and guess what?¡¯
¡®Àç¹ÌÀÖ±¸³ª, ³ª¹«¿¡ ³²Àº ¸¶Áö¸· »ç°ú´Â °¡Àå Å©°í ÁóÀÌ ¸¹´Ü´Ù. ±×¸®°í ¶Ç ¾î¶²Áö ¾Æ´Ï?¡¯ ¾Æºü°¡ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä.

¡®We know,¡¯ said Biff and Chip. ¡®It¡¯s the only one we can¡¯t reach.¡¯
¡®¾Ë¾Æ¿ä, ¿ì¸®°¡ ´êÀ» ¼ö ¾ø´Â À¯ÀÏÇÑ »ç°úÁÒ.¡¯ ºñÇÁ¿Í ĨÀÌ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä.

It was true.
±×·¸´ä´Ï´Ù.

The children had spent the afternoon with Mum and Dad picking apples in Mr Bale¡¯s orchard and the very last apple of all was too high on the tree for anyone to get at.¡¯
¾ÆÀ̵éÀº ¾ö¸¶, ¾Æºü¿Í º£ÀϾ¾ °ú¼ö¿ø¿¡ ÀÖ´Â »ç°úµéÀ» µû±â À§ÇØ ¿ÀÈĸ¦ º¸³Â°í, ¸¶Áö¸· »ç°ú´Â ´©±¸ÀÇ ¼Õ¿¡ ´ê±â¿¡´Â ³Ê¹« ³ôÀÌ ÀÖ¾ú´ä´Ï´Ù.

'If we had a ladder,' suggested Mum.
'¸¸¾à ¿ì¸®°¡ »ç´Ù¸®¸¦ °¡Áö°í ÀÖ¾ú´Ù¸é' ¾ö¸¶°¡ Á¦¾ÈÇß¾î¿ä.

'We could easily get it.'
¿ì¸®´Â ±×°ÍÀ» ½±°Ô µþ ¼ö ÀÖÀ» ÅÙµ¥'

'Well, we don't have one.' said Dad.
'¿ì¸®¿¡°Ô´Â »ç´Ù¸®°¡ ¾ø±¸³ª.' ¾Æºü°¡ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä.

'So what other ideas has anyone got?'
'±×·¯´Ï ¹«½¼ ÁÁÀº »ý°¢ °¡Áö°í ÀÖ´Â »ç¶÷ ÀÖ´Ï?'

¡®How about using a long stick?¡¯ suggested Chip.
¡®±ä ¸·´ë±â¸¦ »ç¿ë ÇÏ´Â °Ô ¾î¶³±î?¡¯ Ĩ¿¡ Á¦¾ÈÇß¾î¿ä.

'I think there was one near the gate that would be just the job.'
'±× ÀÏÀ» Çϴµ¥ µü ¸Â´Â ¸·´ë±â°¡ ¹® ±Ùó¿¡ ÀÖ¾ú´ø °Í °°¾Æ.'

Chip fetched the stick.
ĨÀº ¸·´ë±â¸¦ °¡Á®¿Ô¾î¿ä.

It was forked at one end and it would have been just right except for one thing.
ÇÑ ÂÊ ³¡ÀÌ ±¸ºÎ·¯Á® ÀÖ¾ú¾î¿ä. ±×°ÍÀº ÇÑ°¡Áö¸¦ »©°í´Â ¾È¼º¸ÂÃã À̾ú¾î¿ä.

It was too short!
³Ê¹« ª´Ù´Â °Í!

Dad stood on tiptoe and stretched up as far as he could, but the stick wasn¡¯t quite long enough!
¾Æºü°¡ ¹ß³¡À¸·Î ¼­¼­ ÃÖ´ëÇÑ »¸ÃÄ º¸¾ÒÀ¸³ª, ¸·´ë±â´Â ª¾Ò¾î¿ä.

¡®If ¡¦I¡¦could¡¦just¡¦reach¡¦this¡¦pesky¡¦apple,¡¯ Gasped Dad.
¡®³»°¡¡¦ÀÌ¡¦±î..¾Æ..´Ù..·Î¿î ¡¦»ç°ú¿¡¡¦´êÀ»..¼ö..¸¸..ÀÖ´Ù¸é..¡¯ ¾Æºü°¡ ¼ûÀ» Ç涱ÀÌ¸ç ¸»Çß¾î¿ä.

But it was no good.
ÇÏÁö¸¸ È¿°ú°¡ ¾ø¾ú¾î¿ä.

¡®You need to be a good half metre taller,¡¯ said Biff.
¡®¹Ý ¹ÌÅÍÁ¤µµ ´õ ±ä°Ô ÇÊ¿äÇØ,¡¯ ºñÇÁ°¡ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä.

¡®I¡¯ve had a good idea,¡¯ said Chip. ¡®I know how to make Dad taller.¡¯
¡®ÁÁÀº »ý°¢ÀÌ ÀÖ¾î, ³­ ¾Æºü¸¦ Å©°Ô ¸¸µå´Â ¹ýÀ» ¾È´Ù±¸!¡¯ ĨÀÌ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä.

He sat on Dad¡¯s shoulders and Mum handed him the stick.

¡®³»¡¦°¡¡¦ ³»°¡ ÇÒ ¼ö ÀÖ´Â ÇÑ¡¦.. ¸Ó¡¦¾ó¡¦¸®¡¦ »µ¡¦»¸´Â¡¦´Ù¡¦¸é¡¦,¡¯ ĨÀÌ ÅøÅø°Å·È¾î¿ä.

¡®Oooh, Ouch!¡¯ said Dad.
¡®¾î¾î, ¾îÀÌÄí!¡¯ ¾Æºü°¡ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä.

¡®What have you got in your pockets, Chip?¡¯ Something¡¯s digging into my neck, and it hurts.¡¯
¡®Ä¨, ÁÖ¸Ó´Ï¿¡ °¡Áö°í ÀÖ´Â °Ô ¹¹´Ï? ¹«¾ð°¡ ³» ¸ñÀ» Âñ·¯¼­ ¾ÆÇÁ±¸³ª.¡¯

¡®It¡¯s probably some marbles,¡¯ said Chip. ¡®I¡¯ve got about twenty in my pocket.¡¯
¡®¾Æ¸¶ °ø±êµ¹ÀÌ¿´À» °Å¿¡¿ä,¡¯ ĨÀÌ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä. ¡®Á¦ ÁÖ¸Ó´Ï ¼Ó¿¡ ÇÑ ½º¹«°³´Â Àְŵç¿ä.¡¯

¡®You might have thought of that before you climbed up,¡¯ moaned Dad.
¡®³×°¡ ¿Ã¶ó°¡±â Àü¿¡ ±×°Í¿¡ ´ëÇØ »ý°¢Çß¾ú¾î¾ßÁö,¡¯ ¾Æºü°¡ ²þ²þ´ë¸ç ¸»Çß¾î¿ä.

¡®Don¡¯t complain,¡¯ said mom.
¡®±×¸¸ ºÒÆòÇØ¿ä,¡¯ ¾ö¸¶°¡ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä.

¡®Come on, Chip. Try and hook the apple off and I¡¯ll catch it when it falls.¡¯
¡®ÀÚ, Ĩ. »ç°ú¸¦ ¶³¾î¶ß·Áº¸·Å ±×·¯¸é ¾ö¸¶°¡ ¹ÞÀ» Å״ϱî.¡¯

¡®Right,¡¯ said Chip. ¡®Here goes¡¦!¡¯

Chip carefully put the end of the stick under the stalk of the apple and gently pushed it upwards.
ĨÀº Á¶½É½º·´°Ô ¸·´ë±âÀÇ ³¡À» »ç°úÀÇ ²ÀÁö¿¡ ´­·¯ À§·Î µé¾î¿Ã·È´ä´Ï´Ù.

Then the apple fell.
»ç°ú°¡ ¶³¾îÁ³¾î¿ä.

¡®Catch it, Mum!¡¯ shouted Chip.
¡®Àâ¾Æ¿ä, ¾ö¸¶!¡¯ ĨÀÌ ¼Ò¸®Ãƾî¿ä.

But Mum didn¡¯t catch it.
±×·¯³ª ¾ö¸¶´Â ÀâÁö ¸øÇß¾î¿ä.

It bounced out of her hand and flew towards Biff.
±×°ÍÀº ¾ö¸¶ÀÇ ¼Õ¿¡¼­ ƨ°Ü¿Ã¶ó, ºñÇÁ ¾ÕÀ¸·Î ³¯¾Æ°¬¾î¿ä.

¡®Catch it, Biff!¡¯ shouted Mum. But somehow, Biff didn¡¯t catch it, either.
¡®Àâ¾Æ, ºñÇÁ¡¯ ¾ö¸¶°¡ ¼Ò¸®ÃÆÁö¸¸, ºñÇÁµµ ÀâÁö ¸øÇßÁÒ.

It bounced out of her hand and flew towards Kipper.
±×°ÍÀº ±×³àÀÇ ¼Õ¿¡¼­ ƨ°Ü¿Ã¶ó Å°ÆÛ ¾ÕÀ¸·Î ³¯¾Æ°¬¾î¿ä.

¡®Catch it, Kipper!¡¯ shouted Mum and Biff.
¡®Àâ¾Æ, Å°ÆÛ!¡¯ ¾ö¸¶¿Í ºñÇÁ°¡ ¼Ò¸®Ãƾî¿ä.

Kipper did his best to catch it, but he wasn¡¯t ready.
Å°ÆÛ´Â ÀâÀ¸·Á ÃÖ¼±À» ´ÙÇßÁö¸¸, ÀâÁö ¸øÇß´ä´Ï´Ù.

The apple fell straight through his hands and bounced on the ground towards Floppy.
»ç°ú´Â ±×ÀÇ ¼ÕÀ» ºüÁ®³ª°¡ °ðÀå ¶¥¿¡ ¶³¾îÁ® Ç÷ÎÇÇ ¾ÕÀ¸·Î ƨ°Ü°¬´ä´Ï´Ù.

Floppy opened his mouth and sprang towards the apple.
Ç÷ÎÇÇ´Â ±×ÀÇ ÀÔÀ» ¿­¸é¼­ »ç°ú ¾ÕÀ¸·Î Æ¢¾î°¬¾î¿ä.

¡®Oh no!¡¯ said everyone.
¡®À¸¾Ç ¾ÈµÅ!¡¯ ¸ðµÎ°¡ ¸»ÇßÁÒ.

Well, you can see what happened to the apple.

Floppy crunched it into three pieces and began to chew one of the pieces up.
Ç÷ÎÇÇ´Â »ç°ú¸¦ ÀÔÀ¸·Î ¼¼ Á¶°¢À¸·Î ºÎ¼­Æ®¸° ÈÄ ±× Áß Çϳª¸¦ ¸Ô±â ½ÃÀÛÇß¾î¿ä.

¡®Oh Floppy,¡¯ said Mum.
¡®¿À Ç÷ÎÇÇ,¡¯ ¾ö¸¶°¡ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä.¡¯

¡®That was the best apple in the whole orchard.¡¯ Dad laughed and laughed.
ÀÌ°Ç °ú¼ö¿ø¿¡¼­ °¡Àå ÁÁÀº »ç°úÀ¦¡¯ ¾Æºü´Â ¿ô°í ¶Ç ¿ô¾ú´ä´Ï´Ù.

¡®He was the only one of you who could catch. I¡¯ve never seen so many butterfingers in all my life.¡¯

In the end, Mum couldn¡¯t help laughing either, and everyone joined in.

¡®There¡¯s one good thing about this,¡¯ said Mum. ¡®Now that Floppy¡¯s eaten the best apple, there won¡¯t be any arguments over which one of us should eat it.¡¯

¡®There weren¡¯t going to be any arguments,¡¯ said Dad. ¡®I was going to have it.¡¯

¡®Oh no you weren¡¯t,¡¯ said Mum.

And guess what happened.

Everyone did start arguing over it.
