Cover/Introduction

Floppy is playing with Biff. He¡¯s having a great time chasing the ball, every time Biff throws it.
But what¡¯s that in the front of the picture? It looks like another ball, but it¡¯s very different to the one Floppy and Biff are playing with. It looks like something that is going to give him a bit of a surprise.

Biff had discovered a new trick for Floppy.
ºñÇÁ´Â Ç÷ÎÇÇ¿¡°Ô ½ÃÇèÇØ º¼ »õ·Î¿î ¼ÓÀÓ¼ö¸¦ ¹ß°ßÇß¾î¿ä.

She found he was really good at fetching a ball.
±×³à´Â Ç÷ÎÇÇ°¡ °øÀ» Àß Ã£¾Æ¿Â ´Ù´Â °É ¾Ë°í ÀÖ¾ú°Åµç¿ä.

It didn¡¯t matter how far she threw the ball, or how high it bounced, or how hard she threw it.
±×³à°¡ °øÀ» ¾ó¸¶³ª ¸Ö¸® ´øÁö´Â°¡, ȤÀº ¾ó¸¶³ª ³ôÀÌ Æ¢¾î ¿À¸£³Ä, ¾ó¸¶³ª ¼¼°Ô ´øÁö´À³Ä´Â ¹®Á¦°¡ µÇÁö ¾Ê¾Ò¾î¿ä.

Floppy would chase after it.

He nearly always caught it before it stopped rolling.

Sometimes he would jump high in the air and catch it in his jaws even before it had time to bounce.

¡®You¡¯re a clever dog!¡¯ called Biff, as she threw the ball for the twentieth time.
¡®¶È¶ÈÇϱ¸³ª!¡¯ ºñÇÁ´Â 20¹ø° °øÀ» ´øÁú ¶§ ¿ÜÃƾî¿ä.

But this time Biff threw the ball carelessly, and it bounced behind the shed, and landed in all the old junk that was stacked up there.

The ball landed near an old tyre and next to some planks of wood.
±× °øÀº ¿À·¡µÈ ŸÀÌ¾î ±Ùó¿¡ ¶³¾îÁ³°í, ±× ¿·¿¡´Â ³ª¹«·Î µÈ ³ÎºþÁöµéÀÌ ÀÖ¾ú¾î¿ä.

But when Floppy went to pick it up, he found not one ball.
Ç÷ÎÇÇ°¡ °øÀ» °¡Áö·¯ ±×°÷¿¡ °¬À» ¶§, ±×´Â °øÀ» Çϳª¸¸ ¹ß°ßÇÑ °Ô ¾Æ´Ï¾ú´ä´Ï´Ù.

One of them was a spiky, prickly ball that looked really odd.
±× Áß Çϳª´Â ¸Å¿ì ÀÌ»óÇÏ°Ô º¸ÀÌ´Â ³¡ÀÌ »ÏÁ·ÇÏ°í °¡½ÃÅõ¼ºÀÌÀÇ °øÀ̾ú¾î¿ä.

Poor old Floppy didn¡¯t realize how sharp the prickles were on this strange-looking new ball, and when he went to sniff it, he pricked his nose.

¡®Grrrroooooooowwwhh!¡¯ went Floppy, and he gave a little yelp of surprise.
¡®±×±×±×±×¿ì¿ì¿ì¿ì¿ìÈÄ!!¡¯ Ç÷ÎÇÇ´Â ³î¶ó¼­ »ì¦ ²¤²¤°Å·È¾î¿ä.

Biff ran down the garden to see what was wrong.
ºñÇÁ´Â ¹«½¼ ÀÏÀΰ¡ º¸·¯ ±× ¸¶´çÀ¸·Î ¶Ù¾î³»·Á¿Ô´ä´Ï´Ù.

¡®That¡¯s a funny sort of ball,¡¯ she said. ¡®It¡¯s not a ball at all. I think it must be a hedgehog.¡¯

Biff called Mum and Chip. ¡®I think we¡¯ve got a hedgehog in the garden,¡¯ she said.
ºñÇÁ´Â ¾ö¸¶¿Í ĨÀ» ºÒ·¶¾î¿ä. ¡®¸¶´ç¿¡ °í½¿µµÄ¡°¡ ÀÖ´Â °Í °°¾Æ,¡¯ ±×³à´Â ¸»Çß´ä´Ï´Ù.

Mum and Chip came out to see it.
¾ö¸¶¿Í ĨÀº ±×°ÍÀ» º¸·¯ ¹ÛÀ¸·Î ³ª¿Ô¾î¿ä.

¡®You¡¯re right, Biff,¡¯ said Mum. ¡®It is a hedgehog. I expect it thinks that all this junk is a good place to sleep.¡¯
¡®±×·¸±¸³ª, ºñÇÁ. Àú°Ç °í½¿µµÄ¡¾ß. ±×´Â ÀÌ Æó¹°µéÀÌ ÀáÀڱ⿡ ÁÁÀº Àå¼Ò¶ó°í »ý°¢ÇÏ°í ÀÖ³ª º¸±¸³ª.¡¯ ¾ö¸¶°¡ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä.

¡®Is it asleep now?¡¯ asked Chip.
¡®Áö±Ý Àáµé¾î ÀÖ³ª¿ä?¡¯ ĨÀÌ ¹°¾úÁÒ.

¡®I don¡¯t think so,¡¯ said Mum. ¡®Not with all this noise and commotion going on round it. It curls into a ball to protect itself.
¡®±×·¸Áö ¾ÊÀ»°É. ÁÖÀ§¿¡¼­ ½Ã²ô·´°Ô ¼Òµ¿ºÎ¸®´Â °ÍÀ» µè°í ÀÚ°í ÀÖÁö´Â ¾ÊÀ»²¨¾ß. Àú°Ç ÀÚ½ÅÀ» º¸È£Çϱâ À§ÇØ °¡½Ã·Î ¸öÀ» ½Î°í Àִ°Ŷõ´Ù.

It will just stay curled up like that until it thinks it¡¯s safe to snuffle round looking for food.¡¯
±×´Â ¸ÔÀ» °ÍÀ» ãÀ¸·¯ ÁÖÀ§¸¦ ůů °Å¸®¸ç ´Ù´Ò ¼ö ÀÖÀ» ¸¸Å­ ¾ÈÀüÇØÁú ¶§±îÁö Àú·¸°Ô ¸öÀ» ½Î°í ÀÖÀ»²¨¾ß.¡¯

¡®Can we give it some food? Asked Biff.
¡®¿ì¸®°¡ À½½ÄÀ» Á൵ µÇ¿ä?¡¯ ºñÇÁ°¡ ¹°¾úÁÒ.

¡®Well, it¡¯s best not to,¡¯ said Mum. ¡®Hedgehogs like to eat grubs and worms and snails. It¡¯s not a good idea to put food out for it, but we can put a saucer of water out if you like.¡¯

When it was dark, Mum told the children to put on their coats.
¾îµÎ¿öÁ³À» ¶§, ¾ö¸¶´Â ¾ÆÀ̵鿡°Ô ¿ÜÅõ¸¦ ÀÔÀ¸¶ó°í ¸»Çß¾î¿ä.

Then she got a lamp from the garage and lit it.
±×¸®°í ³ª¼­ ±×³à´Â Â÷°í¿¡¼­ ÀüµîÀ» °¡Áö°í ³ª¿Í ±×°ÍÀ» Ä×¾î¿ä.

¡®Where are we going?¡¯ asked Kipper. ¡®And why do you need that lamp?¡¯
¡®¿ì¸® ¾îµð °¡´Â °Å¿¡¿ä? ¿Ö ÀüµîÀÌ ÇÊ¿äÇØ¿ä?¡¯ Å°ÆÛ°¡ ¹°¾ú´ä´Ï´Ù.

¡®We¡¯re going inside the shed,¡¯ said Mum.
¡®¿ì¸° â°í ¾ÈÀ¸·Î °¥²¨¾ß,¡¯ ¾ö¸¶°¡ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä.

¡®We¡¯re going to be very quiet and if we wait long enough, we may see something very special.¡¯
¡®¿ì¸° ¸Å¿ì Á¶¿ëÈ÷ ÇØ¾ß ÇØ. ±×¸®°í ¾ó¸¶°£ ±â´Ù¸®¸é ¾ÆÁÖ Æ¯º°ÇÑ °ÍÀ» º¼ ¼ö ÀÖ´Ü´Ù.¡¯

Of course, Biff and Chip knew why Mum was taking them to the shed. Do you know?

Mum hung the lamp on a nail outside and everyone waited, very quietly.
¾ö¸¶´Â ÀüµîÀ» ¹Û¿¡ ÀÖ´Â ¸ø¿¡ °É¾ú°í ¸ðµÎµé ¾ÆÁÖ Á¶¿ëÇÏ°Ô ±â´Ù·È¾î¿ä.

Dozens and dozens of moths and insects began to flutter near the lamp.
¼ö½Ê ¸¶¸®ÀÇ ³ª¹æ°ú °ïÃæµéÀÌ Àüµî ¿·¿¡¼­ ÆÞ·°°Å¸®¸ç ³¯¾Æ´Ù³æ¾î¿ä.

¡®Insects like to fly towards bright light at night,¡¯ said Chip.
¡®°ïÃæµéÀº ¹ã¿¡ ¹àÀº ºû ¾Õ¿¡¼­ ³ª´Â °É ÁÁ¾ÆÇÏÁö,¡¯ ĨÀÌ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä.

¡®Sssh¡¦¡¯ said Mum. ¡®Let¡¯s keep very quiet, and see what else we can see.¡¯
¡®½¬~~~, Á¶¿ëÈ÷ ÇÏÀÚ, ±×·¯¸é ¿ì¸®´Â ¹«¾ð°¡ º¼ ¼ö ÀÖÀ»²¨¾ß.¡¯ ¾ö¸¶°¡ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä.

Then as they watched, the hedgehog walked past.
±×¸®°í ±×µéÀÌ ÃÄ´Ùº¼ ¶§, °í½¿µµÄ¡°¡ °É¾î°¬¾î¿ä.

They could see it quite clearly in the light of the lamp.
±×µéÀº Àüµî ºû ¼Ó¿¡¼­ ¸Å¿ì ¶Ç·ÇÇÏ°Ô ±×°ÍÀ» º¼ ¼ö ÀÖ¾ú´ä´Ï´Ù.

¡®Isn¡¯t it a funny little creature?¡¯ said Biff. ¡®I didn¡¯t know it looked quite like that.¡¯
¡®ÀÛ°í Àç¹ÌÀÖ´Â µ¿¹° ¾Æ´Ï´Ï? ³­ Àú·¸°Ô »ý°åÀ»Áö´Â ¸ô¶ú¾î.¡¯ ºñÇÁ°¡ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä.

¡®It hurts for food at night,¡¯ said Mum. ¡®I expect it¡¯s off to look for some juicy, fat slugs.¡¯
¡®°í½¿µµÄ¡´Â ¹ã¿¡ »ç³ÉÀ» ÇÑ´Ü´Ù. ¾Æ¸¶ ±×´Â ÁóÀÌ ¸¹Àº ÅëÅëÇÑ ¹Î´ÞÆØÀ̸¦ ã¾Æ ´Ù´Ò°Å¾ß.¡¯

¡®Ugh!¡¯ said Kipper. ¡®Fancy eating slugs.¡¯
¡®À¸¿¢! ¹Î´ÞÆØÀÌ ¸Ô´Â°É »ó»óÇغÁ!¡¯ Å°ÆÛ°¡ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä.

¡®Well, if it saw some of the things we eat, it would probably say ¡°ugh¡±, too!,¡¯ laughed Mum.
¡®°í½¿µµÄ¡°¡ ¿ì¸®°¡ ¸Ô´Â À½½ÄÀ» ºÃ´Ù¸é, ºÐ¸í ±×µµ ÀÌ·¸°Ô ¸»ÇÒ²¨¾ß ¡°À¸¿¢¡±.¡¯¾ö¸¶°¡ ¿ô¾ú´ä´Ï´Ù.
