| Biff and Chip Storybooks ; The Hedgehog(고슴도치)
Cover/Introduction
Floppy is playing with Biff. He’s having a great time chasing the ball, every time Biff throws it.
But what’s that in the front of the picture? It looks like another ball, but it’s very different to the one Floppy and Biff are playing with. It looks like something that is going to give him a bit of a surprise.
플로피는 비프와 놀고 있었어요. 그는 공을 쫓는데 신나 있었고, 매번 비프가 공을 던졌죠.
근데, 그림 앞에 있는 저건 뭐지요? 저건 또 다른 공처럼 보이는군요, 그러나 플로피와 비프가 가지고 놀고 있는 공과는 매우 다르군요. 그건 플로피를 깜짝 놀라게 할 것처럼 보이는군요. 대체 저게 뭘까요?

Biff had discovered a new trick for Floppy.
비프는 플로피에게 시험해 볼 새로운 속임수를 발견했어요.
She found he was really good at fetching a ball.
그녀는 플로피가 공을 잘 찾아온 다는 걸 알고 있었거든요.
It didn’t matter how far she threw the ball, or how high it bounced, or how hard she threw it.
그녀가 공을 얼마나 멀리 던지는가, 혹은 얼마나 높이 튀어 오르냐, 얼마나 세게 던지느냐는 문제가 되지 않았어요.
Floppy would chase after it.
플로피는 그 공을 쫓을 수 있었거든요.
He nearly always caught it before it stopped rolling.
플로피는 공이 떼굴떼굴 구르는 게 멈추기 전에 항상 공을 잡아온답니다.
Sometimes he would jump high in the air and catch it in his jaws even before it had time to bounce.
때론 플로피는 공중에 높이 뛰어 공이 튀기 전에 입으로 잡곤 하지요.
‘You’re a clever dog!’ called Biff, as she threw the ball for the twentieth time.
‘똑똑하구나!’ 비프는 20번째 공을 던질 때 외쳤어요.
But this time Biff threw the ball carelessly, and it bounced behind the shed, and landed in all the old junk that was stacked up there.
그러나 이번엔 비프가 생각없이 공을 던졌고, 공은 차고 뒤에서 튕겼어요. 그리고 그곳에 놓여 있는 오래된 폐물 안에 떨어졌어요.

The ball landed near an old tyre and next to some planks of wood.
그 공은 오래된 타이어 근처에 떨어졌고, 그 옆에는 나무로 된 널빤지들이 있었어요.
But when Floppy went to pick it up, he found not one ball.
플로피가 공을 가지러 그곳에 갔을 때, 그는 공을 하나만 발견한 게 아니었답니다.
One of them was a spiky, prickly ball that looked really odd.
그 중 하나는 매우 이상하게 보이는 끝이 뾰족하고 가시투성이의 공이었어요.

Poor old Floppy didn’t realize how sharp the prickles were on this strange-looking new ball, and when he went to sniff it, he pricked his nose.
가엾은 플로피는 이 이상하게 보이는 공 표면의 가시가 얼마나 날카로운지 알지 못하고, 그것의 냄새를 맡으려다가 코를 찔려버렸답니다.
‘Grrrroooooooowwwhh!’ went Floppy, and he gave a little yelp of surprise.
‘그그그그우우우우우후!!’ 플로피는 놀라서 살짝 깽깽거렸어요.
Biff ran down the garden to see what was wrong.
비프는 무슨 일인가 보러 그 마당으로 뛰어내려왔답니다.
‘That’s a funny sort of ball,’ she said. ‘It’s not a ball at all. I think it must be a hedgehog.’
‘웃긴 공이네, 근데 그건 공이 아니야. 내 생각에 저건 분명 고슴도치야!’ 그녀는 말했어요.

Biff called Mum and Chip. ‘I think we’ve got a hedgehog in the garden,’ she said.
비프는 엄마와 칩을 불렀어요. ‘마당에 고슴도치가 있는 것 같아,’ 그녀는 말했답니다.
Mum and Chip came out to see it.
엄마와 칩은 그것을 보러 밖으로 나왔어요.
‘You’re right, Biff,’ said Mum. ‘It is a hedgehog. I expect it thinks that all this junk is a good place to sleep.’
‘그렇구나, 비프. 저건 고슴도치야. 그는 이 폐물들이 잠자기에 좋은 장소라고 생각하고 있나 보구나.’ 엄마가 말했어요.
‘Is it asleep now?’ asked Chip.
‘지금 잠들어 있나요?’ 칩이 물었죠.
‘I don’t think so,’ said Mum. ‘Not with all this noise and commotion going on round it. It curls into a ball to protect itself.
‘그렇지 않을걸. 주위에서 시끄럽게 소동부리는 것을 듣고 자고 있지는 않을꺼야. 저건 자신을 보호하기 위해 가시로 몸을 싸고 있는거란다.
It will just stay curled up like that until it thinks it’s safe to snuffle round looking for food.’
그는 먹을 것을 찾으러 주위를 킁킁 거리며 다닐 수 있을 만큼 안전해질 때까지 저렇게 몸을 싸고 있을꺼야.’
‘Can we give it some food? Asked Biff.
‘우리가 음식을 줘도 되요?’ 비프가 물었죠.
‘Well, it’s best not to,’ said Mum. ‘Hedgehogs like to eat grubs and worms and snails. It’s not a good idea to put food out for it, but we can put a saucer of water out if you like.’
‘글쎄, 별로 좋을 것 같지 않구나, 고슴도치들은 딱정벌레나, 벌레, 달팽이 같은 것 먹는걸 좋아해. 그래서 음식을 내다 주는 건 별로 좋은 생각 같지 않구나. 그러나 너가 좋다면, 받침대에 그가 마실 물을 담아 주는 건 괜찮을 것 같다.’

When it was dark, Mum told the children to put on their coats.
어두워졌을 때, 엄마는 아이들에게 외투를 입으라고 말했어요.
Then she got a lamp from the garage and lit it.
그리고 나서 그녀는 차고에서 전등을 가지고 나와 그것을 켰어요.
‘Where are we going?’ asked Kipper. ‘And why do you need that lamp?’
‘우리 어디 가는 거에요? 왜 전등이 필요해요?’ 키퍼가 물었답니다.
‘We’re going inside the shed,’ said Mum.
‘우린 창고 안으로 갈꺼야,’ 엄마가 말했어요.
‘We’re going to be very quiet and if we wait long enough, we may see something very special.’
‘우린 매우 조용히 해야 해. 그리고 얼마간 기다리면 아주 특별한 것을 볼 수 있단다.’
Of course, Biff and Chip knew why Mum was taking them to the shed. Do you know?

Mum hung the lamp on a nail outside and everyone waited, very quietly.
엄마는 전등을 밖에 있는 못에 걸었고 모두들 아주 조용하게 기다렸어요.
Dozens and dozens of moths and insects began to flutter near the lamp.
수십 마리의 나방과 곤충들이 전등 옆에서 펄럭거리며 날아다녔어요.
‘Insects like to fly towards bright light at night,’ said Chip.
‘곤충들은 밤에 밝은 빛 앞에서 나는 걸 좋아하지,’ 칩이 말했어요.
‘Sssh…’ said Mum. ‘Let’s keep very quiet, and see what else we can see.’
‘쉬~~~, 조용히 하자, 그러면 우리는 무언가 볼 수 있을꺼야.’ 엄마가 말했어요.
Then as they watched, the hedgehog walked past.
그리고 그들이 쳐다볼 때, 고슴도치가 걸어갔어요.
They could see it quite clearly in the light of the lamp.
그들은 전등 빛 속에서 매우 또렷하게 그것을 볼 수 있었답니다.
‘Isn’t it a funny little creature?’ said Biff. ‘I didn’t know it looked quite like that.’
‘작고 재미있는 동물 아니니? 난 저렇게 생겼을지는 몰랐어.’ 비프가 말했어요.
‘It hurts for food at night,’ said Mum. ‘I expect it’s off to look for some juicy, fat slugs.’
‘고슴도치는 밤에 사냥을 한단다. 아마 그는 즙이 많은 통통한 민달팽이를 찾아 다닐거야.’
‘Ugh!’ said Kipper. ‘Fancy eating slugs.’
‘으엑! 민달팽이 먹는걸 상상해봐!’ 키퍼가 말했어요.
‘Well, if it saw some of the things we eat, it would probably say “ugh”, too!,’ laughed Mum.
‘고슴도치가 우리가 먹는 음식을 봤다면, 분명 그도 이렇게 말할꺼야 “으엑”.’엄마가 웃었답니다.
