Mum and the twins wondered if Floppy would go for a swim to fetch a stick if they threw one in the water.
엄마와 쌍둥이는 만약 그들이 막대기를 물에 던진다면 플로피가 그것을 잡으러 수영을 할 것인지 궁금했답니다.

One windy afternoon, Biff and Chip went with Mum when she took Floppy out for his daily walk.
어느 바람 부는 날, 엄마가 플로피를 산책 시키러 나갈 때 비프와 칩도 함께 나갔답니다.
They went to the park which wasn’t very far away.
그들은 그리 멀지 않은 공원으로 갔어요.
The children liked going to the park.
아이들은 공원에 가는걸 좋아하거든요.
It had a little lake in it.
거기엔 작은 호수가 있었어요.
Sometimes there were ducks on the lake, but on this particular afternoon, there was a lady with two dogs who were jumping into the water to fetch sticks.
때때로 호수 위엔 오리들이 있었어요, 근데 그날 오후엔, 막대기를 잡으러 물 속으로 뛰어드는 두 마리의 개를 데리고 있는 한 아가씨가 있었답니다.
‘Look at those dogs swimming after sticks,’ said Biff.
‘막대기를 쫓아 수영하는 저 개들 좀 봐,’ 비프가 말했어요.
‘I didn’t know dogs could swim so well.’
‘난 개들이 수영을 저렇게 잘하는지 미처 몰랐어.’
‘Oh yes,’ said Mum. ‘Dogs are good swimmers. Some dogs have been known to rescue people and save them from drowning.’
‘오 그래, 개들은 수영을 잘하지, 어떤 개들은 물에 빠진 사람을 구하기도 한단다.’ 엄마가 말했어요.

‘Floppy likes fetching things,’ said Biff. ‘He loves chasing after balls in the garden. Do you think he would jump in the lake and fetch a stick?’
‘플로피는 물건을 잡아오는 걸 좋아해,’ 비프가 말했어요. ‘그는 마당에서 공을 쫓아다니는 걸 좋아하지. 막대기를 잡으러 플로피가 물 속으로 뛰어들을까?’ 비프가 말했어요.
‘I don’t know,’ said Mum. ‘I’ve never seen him swim. I wonder if he will?’
‘글쎄… 난 플로피가 수영하는걸 본 적이 없어. 그가 수영할지 궁금한데?’ 엄마가 말했어요.
She picked up the stick and threw it into the lake.
그녀는 막대기를 하나 집어 들어 호수로 던졌어요.
‘fetch it, Floppy!’ she called. ‘Go on, fetch!’
‘그것을 잡아와, 플로피!’ 그녀가 말했어요. ‘자, 잡아와!’
Floppy didn’t move.
플로피는 움직이지 않았죠.
He didn’t move when Biff tried throwing a stick.
그는 비프가 막대기를 던지는 시늉을 해도 움직이지 않았답니다.
‘I’d have thought that seeing those two dogs in the water would have given him the idea,’ said Chip.
‘난 물에 있는 그 두 리의 개를 보는 것이 플로피도 하고 싶을거라고 생각했는데’칩이 말했어요.
They all tried throwing more sticks but Floppy simply wouldn’t move.
그들은 더 많은 막대기를 던져 보았으나 플로피는 꿈쩍도 안했어요.
‘At this rate there will be enough sticks in the water to build a bridge,’ laughed Mum.
‘이런 상태로는 호수에 다리를 지을 정도의 막대기가 쌓이겠구나,’ 엄마가 웃으셨어요.

‘I can’t believe Floppy won’t swim for us,’ said Biff.
‘플로피가 우리를 위해 수영을 안 한다는 게 믿어지지 않아.’ 비프가 말했어요.
She found one more stick, and showed it to Floppy.
그녀는 막대기를 하나 더 찾아 그것을 플로피에게 보여주었어요.
But just as she threw it, a gust of wind blew her hat off and it went flying off into the lake.
그러나 그녀가 그것을 던지자 마자, 갑자기 바람이 불어 그녀의 모자를 벗겨 버렸고, 모자는 호수로 날아가 버렸답니다.
‘Oh no!’ Biff yelled. ‘My hat!,’ The hat sailed through the air, spinning round and round.
‘앗 안돼! 내 모자!’ 비프가 소리질렀어요. 모자는 공중에 뜨더니 뱅글뱅글 돌았답니다.
Then it landed in the lake where it floated among all the sticks that Biff, Chip and Mum had thrown in.
그리고 그것은 비프와 칩, 엄마가 던진 막대기들이 둥둥 떠있는 호수에 착륙했지 뭐에요!
‘Oh dear,’ wailed Biff. ‘The wind is blowing it out farther and farther. We’ll never be able to reach it, and it was my favorite hat, too.’
‘오 저런, 바람이 저것을 더 멀리 보내버릴꺼야. 우린 결코 저걸 잡을 수 없을꺼야. 내가 제일 좋아하는 모자였는데.’ 비프가 소리 내어 울었어요.

Suddenly Floppy ran towards the lake.
갑자기 플로피가 호수 앞으로 뛰어갔어요!
With an enormous bound he sprang into the water, and swam towards Biff’s hat.
크게 도약하더니 물 속으로 뛰어들었고, 비프의 모자가 있는 곳으로 수영해 갔어요.
‘Wow!’ said Biff. ‘Who said Floppy wouldn’t go for a swim? What a good dog!’
‘우와! 누가 플로피는 수영을 못할거라고 했어? 플로피는 정말 훌륭해!!’ 비프가 말했어요.
‘it’s Floppy to the rescue, all right,’ said Chip. ‘Look he’s rescued Biff’s hat,’ said Chip.
‘플로피가 그것을 구한다니까, 좋았어,’‘플로피가 비프의 모자를 구하는 걸 봐봐!’ 칩이 말했어요.

Floppy looked really pleased with himself as he came out of the water.
플로피는 물에서 나올 때 정말 즐거워 보였어요.
He carried Biff’s hat very carefully in his jaws.
그는 그의 입으로 비프의 모자를 조심스럽게 가져왔어요.
‘Thank you, Floppy,’ said Biff, taking the hat.
‘고맙다, 플로피,’ 모자를 받으며 비프가 말했어요.
‘What a clever dog you are.’
‘참 영리하구나!.’
‘Hooray!’ said chip. ‘I think Floppy is a sensible dog. He won’t jump in a cold lake to fetch silly sticks, but when it comes to a proper rescue, he can swim really well.’
‘만세!! 플로피는 똑똑한 개라고 생각해. 막대기 따위를 잡기 위해서는 차가운 호수에 뛰어들지 않았던 거야. 근데 정말 구해야 할 때가 오니까 플로피는 수영을 정말 잘 했다구!’ 칩이 말했어요.
At that moment Floppy shook himself and the water from his coat sprayed all over Biff, Chip and Mum.
그때 플로피는 몸을 흔들었고 그의 털 속의 물이 비프, 칩 그리고 엄마에게 사방으로 퍼졌답니다.
‘Hey!’ called Mum. ‘You’re making us all wet. Stop it Floppy!’
‘이와! 다 젖었잖아. 그만해, 플로피!’
Floppy gave a little bark.
플로피가 살짝 짖었어요.
He can’t talk of course but if he could, I wonder what he would have said!
그는 물론 말을 못하지만 만약 한다면, 그가 무슨 말을 했을까 궁금했어요!
