Cover/Introduction
This enormous box was left behind when a new fridge-freezer was delivered to the house. The box gave Biff and Chip a good idea, so they asked Mum if they could have it. Can you guess what their idea was?
이 거대한 상자는 냉장고가 집으로 배달된 후 남겨진 것이지요. 이 상자는 비프와 칩에게 좋은 생각을 떠오르게 했고, 그들은 그것을 갖을 수 있는지 엄마에게 물었어요. 그들의 생각이 어떤 것인지 추측할 수 있겠어요?

When the new fridge-freezer was delivered, it came in a huge cardboard box.
새로운 냉장고가 배달되었을 때, 그건 커다란 판지 상자에 담겨 왔어요.
‘May we have the box, Mum?’ asked Chip.
‘우리가 이 상자를 가져도 되요, 엄마?’ 칩이 물었어요.
‘It would be a great thing to play with. Maybe we could make a little house out of it.’
‘갖고 놀기에 좋을 것 같아요. 아마 이것으로 작은 집을 만들 수 있을 거에요.’
‘It would only be a little house,’ said Biff. ‘Because I don’t think more than one of us could get inside it.’
‘작은 집이 될꺼야, 왜냐하면 그 안으로 우리들 중 한명 이상 들어갈 수 있을 것 같지 않거든.’ 비프가 말했어요.
The delivery man said he had some even bigger boxes in the back of his van.
배달원은 그의 트럭에 더 큰 상자가 몇 개 있다고 말했어요.
‘Normally, I throw them away,’ he said. ‘So if you want them, you’re welcome to them.’
‘보통 난 그것을 버리죠, 그래서 여러분이 원한다면, 여러분은 그것을 가질 수 있어요.’
‘Wow! Thanks!’ said Biff and Chip.
‘와! 고마워요’ 비프와 칩이 말했어요.

Mum helped Biff and Chip make the house.
엄마는 비프와 칩이 집을 만드는걸 도와주었어요.
She carefully cut out the windows and door, and she thought of a way to make a sloping roof.
그녀는 조심스럽게 창문과 대문을 잘랐고, 경사진 지붕을 만드는 방법을 생각해 냈어요.
Biff and chip painted the little house.
비프와 칩은 작은 집에 색칠을 했지요.
Chip painted a brick pattern on the sides, and when he’d finished, Biff had a go at painting tiles on the roof.
칩은 벽면에 벽돌 무늬를 그렸고, 그가 다 그렸을 때, 비프는 그 다음으로 지붕에 타일 모양을 그렸어요.
‘It’s brilliant inside,’ said Chip, crawling through the little door.
‘실내가 멋져!’ 작은 문으로 기어들어가면서 칩이 말했어요.
‘Maybe we can put some tiny furniture in here.’
‘아마 여기에 작은 가구들을 넣을 수 있을꺼야.’
‘Just stay outside while I’m cutting these windows out,’ warned Mum.
‘내가 이 창문들을 자를 동안 잠시 밖에 있으렴,’ 엄마가 주의를 주셨어요.

When the house was finished everyone thought it looked really good.
집이 다 만들어졌을 때 모두가 정말 멋져 보인다고 생각했어요.
There was room inside for Biff, Chip and Kipper, and there was even a little extension for Floppy.
안에는 비프와 칩 그리고 키퍼를 위한 방이 있었고, 플로피를 위한 공간도 있었지요.
Chip had painted a sign that said ‘Our house’ and another one that said ‘Floppy’.
칩은 한쪽엔 ‘우리집’이라는 푯말을 그렸고, 다른 한쪽엔 ‘플로피’라고 썼어요.
Biff found a little chair and a stool that were small enough to fit inside.
비프는 안에 들여놓을 수 있을 만큼 작은 의자와 걸상을 찾아냈지요,
‘I think it’s brilliant!’ said Kipper.
‘정말 멋진 것 같아!’ 키퍼가 말했어요.
He liked the tall part of the house where everyone could stand up.
그는 모두가 서 있을 수 있는 가장 높은 부분을 좋아했답니다.
‘You’d better come inside,’ Chip called to Biff. ‘It’s beginning to rain.’
‘안으로 들어오는 게 좋을꺼야, 비가 오기 시작했거든.’ 칩이 키퍼에게 말했어요.

It didn’t just rain! It poured!
단순한 비가 아니에요! 막 퍼부었어요!
At first it was fun inside the little house.
처음에 작은 집 안에 있는 게 재미있었지요.
The children looked out at the rain and felt very snug and safe.
아이들은 비가 오는걸 쳐다보면서 아늑하고 안전함을 느꼈지요.
But after a while, water began to drip on them, and big wet patches appeared in the walls.
그러나 잠시 후에, 물은 그들에게 물방울이 똑똑 떨어졌고, 커다랗게 젖은 부분이 벽에 나타나기 시작했어요!
‘Oh no!’ said Biff. ‘I don’t think cardboard is waterproof. I think the house is collapsing.’
‘으아 안돼! 판지는 방수가 되지 않아. 집이 무너질 꺼야.’
‘The walls do fell soggy,’ said Chip. ‘And the roof’s beginning to sag.’
‘벽이 흠뻑 젖었어, 그리고 지붕이 가라앉기 시작해.’
Mum ran out into the garden.
엄마가 마당으로 뛰어나오셨어요.
‘Oh dear,’ she said. ‘I should have warned you about the rain. We should have put the little house in the garage until the rain stopped.
‘오 저런, 내가 비를 조심하라고 주의를 줬어야 했는데… 우리는 비가 그칠 때까지 작은 집을 차고에 넣어 두어야겠다.’
What a pity, after all the work you’ve done to make the house look nice. Now it’s ruined!’
가엽게도, 너희들이 꾸며놓은 집이 망가졌구나!’

Later that day, Dad found the tent and he put it up in the garden.
저녁에, 아빠는 텐트를 찾아 마당에 세워주셨어요.
‘Sorry your cardboard house was spoilt by the rain,’ he said, ‘but you can keep this tent up for as long as you like.
‘너희들이 판지 집이 비 때문에 망가져서 유감이구나, 그러나 이 텐트는 너희들이 좋을 때까지 오래 사용할 수 있어.
Luckily the rain won’t spoil it.
다행스럽게 비는 텐트를 망가뜨리지 못할꺼야.
It’s quite waterproof.’
이건 방수가 되거든.’
‘We like the tent,’ said Chip. ‘At least it won’t go soggy.’
‘우린 텐트가 좋아요, 적어도 이건 비에 젖진 않을 테니까요.’ 칩이 말했어요.
‘No, but tents can collapse,’ said Dad. ‘So we must make sure we put all the pegs in firmly.’
‘그럼! 근데 텐트도 무너질 수 있단다, 그래서 우리는 말뚝을 단단히 박아야 하지.’
