Biff and Chip love playing ball games. Do you know what game they are playing here? Playing with a ball in a small garden can sometimes lead to trouble. Biff and Chip had all sort of difficulties when they played ball in their back garden, until Dad had a really good idea.

No-one was pleased when Chip kicked the plastic football at the roses, and it punctured on one of the sharp thorns.

Dad wasn¡¯t pleased either, because he didn¡¯t want the roses spoilt.

¡®Hey, you two!¡¯ he shouted.
¡®À̺Á! ³ÊÈñ µÑ!¡¯ ¾Æºü°¡ ¼Ò¸®Ãƾî¿ä.

¡®Play football down the bottom of the garden.
¡®Á¤¿ø¿¡¼­´Â °ø³îÀÌ ÇÏ´Â°É ÀÚÁ¦ ÇϰŶó.

There aren¡¯t any roses down there.¡¯
Àå¹Ì²ÉÀÌ ³²¾ÆÀÖÁú ¾ÊÀÝ´Ï.¡¯

¡®We can¡¯t play football anywhere now,¡¯ said Biff.

Now that they couldn¡¯t play football, they decided to get out the badminton rackets and play badminton.
±×µéÀº Ã౸¸¦ ÇÒ ¼ö ¾ø¾î¼­, º£µå¹ÎÅÏ ¶óÄÏÀ» °¡Áö°í ³ª¿Í º£µå¹ÎÅÏÀ» Çϱâ·Î °áÁ¤Çß¾î¿ä.

¡®We¡¯ve only got one shuttlecock,¡¯ said Biff. ¡®So we will have to be careful.¡¯
¡®º£µå¹ÎÅÏ °øÀÌ Çϳª¹Û¿¡ ¾ø³×,¡¯ ºñÇÁ°¡ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä. ¡®¿ì¸° Á¶½ÉÇؾßÇØ.¡¯

At first, they were very careful.

They hit the shuttlecock gently between each other, seeing who would be first to miss it.
±×µéÀº ´©°¡ ¸ÕÀú °øÀ» ¶³¾î¶ß¸®³ª º¸¸é¼­, ¾äÀüÇÏ°Ô º£µå¹ÎÅÏ °øÀ» ÁÖ°í ¹Þ¾Ò¾î¿ä.

Most of the time they only hit it about twice each.

¡®Hitting a shuttlecock is quite difficult,¡¯ said Biff.

¡®It¡¯s not like hitting a ball.¡¯

¡®That¡¯s true,¡¯ said Chip. ¡®You can hit a shuttlecock really hard &¡®¸Â¾Æ,¡¯ ĨÀÌ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä. ¡®³Í ÀÌ·¸°Ô º£µå¹ÎÅÏ °øÀ» ¾î·Æ°Ô Ä¥ ¼ö ¹Û¿¡ ¾ø¾î, ±×¸®°í ÀÌ°Ç ¸Ö¸® ³ª°¡Áöµµ ¾Ê¾Æ.¡¯

As he said this he gave the shuttle a huge whack with his racket.

It flew up in the air and landed on the roof.

¡®Oh no!¡¯ groaned Biff. ¡®You¡¯ve knocked it into the gutter. How on earth are we going to get it down?¡¯
¡®¿À Àú·±! ȨÅë¿¡ ºüÁ³ÀݾÆ. ´ëü Àú°É ¾î¶»°Ô ²¨³½´ã?¡¯ ºñÇÁ°¡ ²þ²þ°Å·È¾î¿ä.

¡®I¡¯m afraid it will just have to say there until the wind blows it down,¡¯ said Dad.

Biff remembered that there was a tiny cricket bat in the shed.

¡®Let¡¯s play French Cricket,¡¯ she said.
¡®ÇÁ¶û½º½Ä Å©¸®ÄÏ ³îÀÌ ÇÏÀÚ,¡¯ ±×³à°¡ ¸»ÇßÁÒ.

Chip couldn¡¯t remember what French Cricket was.
¡®Ä¨Àº ÇÁ¶û½º½Ä Å©¸®ÄÏ ³îÀÌ°¡ ¾î¶² °ÍÀÎÁö ±â¾ïÀÌ ³ªÁú ¾Ê¾Ò¾î¿ä.

¡®You know,¡¯ said Biff. ¡®You have to try and hit my legs with the ball.
¡®À½, °øÀ¸·Î ³» ´Ù¸®¸¦ Ä¡·Á°í ÇÏ¸é µÅ.¡¯

I have to make sure you don¡¯t.
³­ ³Ê°¡ ¸øÇÏ°Ô ¸·¾Æ¾ß Çϱ¸.

If you catch the ball, or hit my legs or feet, I¡¯m not.¡¯

French Cricket might have been a good game to play in the garden if Biff had remembered not to hit the ball too hard, but she didn¡¯t.

When Chip threw the ball at Biff¡¯s legs she whacked it, and it whizzed through the air and flew over the fence into the neighbor¡¯s garden.

The neighbor was watching what happened through his upstairs window.
ÀÌ¿ôÀº ÀÌÃþ â¹®¿¡¼­ ¹«½¼ ÀÏÀÌ ¹ú¾îÁ³´ÂÁö º¸°í ÀÖ¾ú¾î¿ä.

¡®Oh dear,¡¯ said Biff. ¡®He doesn¡¯t look too pleased. I think we should wait until he throws the ball back, but that might not be until tomorrow!¡¯
¡®¾î¸Ó³ª, ±×°¡ ±âºÐÀÌ ³ªºüº¸ÀδÙ. ±×°¡ °øÀ» µ¹·ÁÁÙ ¶§±îÁö ±â´Ù¸®´Â°Ô ÁÁ°Ú¾î, ±Ùµ¥ ³»ÀϱîÁö ±â´Ù¸®Áö ¾Ê´Â´Ù¸é ÁÁÀ¸·Ã¸¸!¡¯ ºñÇÁ°¡ ¸»Çß´ä´Ï´Ù.

The next day, Dad came back from town with a long, thin box.

¡®I¡¯ve got a surprise for you two,¡¯ he said.
¡®³î¶ö ¸¸ÇÑ °ÍÀÌ ÀÖ´Ù,¡¯ ¾Æºü´Â ¸»Çß¾î¿ä.

¡®I think I¡¯ve thought of a way for you to play ball games safely in the back garden.¡¯
¡®µÞ¸¶´ç¿¡¼­ ¾ÈÀüÇÏ°Ô °ø³îÀ̸¦ ÇÒ ¼ö ÀÖ´Â ¹æ¹ýÀ» »ý°¢ÇØ ºÃÁö.¡¯

He opened the box and pulled out two long metal poles.
±×´Â »óÀÚ¸¦ ¿­¾î ±ä ¼è ¸·´ë±â¸¦ ²¨³Â¾î¿ä.

¡®One of those poles looks like a giant corkscrew,¡¯ said Chip.
¡®ÀÌ ¸·´ë±â Áß Çϳª´Â °Å´ëÇÑ ÄÚ¸£Å© µû°³Ã³·³ º¸ÀδÙ,¡¯ ĨÀÌ ¸»ÇßÁÒ.

¡®What do you think it is?¡¯
¡®ÀÌ°Ô ¹¹¶ó°í »ý°¢ÇØ?¡¯

¡®I don¡¯t know,¡¯ said Biff. ¡®Whatever it is, it¡¯s got rackets and a ball on a cord.¡¯
¡®¸ð¸£°Ú´Â°É, ±Ùµ¥ ¶óÄÏ°ú °øÀÌ ²ö¿¡ ¹­¿©ÀÖ±¸³ª.¡¯

¡®It¡¯s called a Swing Ball,¡¯ said Dad.
¡®ÀÌ°Ç ¡®È¸Àü °ø¡¯À̶ó ºÒ¸°´Ü´Ù,¡¯ ¾Æºü°¡ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä.

Dad put the two metal poles together and pushed the Swing Ball into the grass in the centre of the lawn.
¾Æºü´Â µÎ°³ÀÇ ¼è¸·´ë±â¸¦ °°ÀÌ ²¨³» Àܵ𠰡¿îµ¥¿¡ ¡®È¸Àü °ø¡¯À» ¹Ð¾î ³Ö¾ú´ä´Ï´Ù.

He gave Biff and Chip two black plastic rackets.
±×´Â ºñÇÁ¿Í Ĩ¿¡°Ô µÎ°³ÀÇ °ËÁ¤ ¶óÄÏÀ» ÁÖ¾ú¾î¿ä.

¡®There we are¡¯ he said. ¡®You can see how it works. Now you can play as much as you like, and there won¡¯t be any more trouble.¡¯
¡®¿©±â ÀÖ´Ù. ¾î¶»°Ô ÇÏ´Â °ÇÁö º¸°Ô µÉ²¨¾ß. ÀÌÁ¨ ³ÊÈñ°¡ ³î°í ½ÍÀº ¸¸Å­ ³î¾Æµµ µÅ. ±×¸®°í ´õ ÀÌ»ó ¹®Á¦°¡ ¾øÀ»²¨¾ß.¡¯ ¾Æºü°¡ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä.

¡®It¡¯s brilliant,¡¯ said Chip. ¡®But it¡¯s quite hard to hit the ball sometimes when it swing round at you.¡¯
¡®¸ÚÁö´Ù! ±Ùµ¥ °øÀÌ ³Ê ÁÖÀ§¿¡¼­ Èçµé¸± ¶§´Â Ä¡±â°¡ ²Ï ¾î·Á¿î°É.¡¯

Mum came out to watch them playing.

¡®Hurry up, you two. Dad and I want to have a go.¡¯

¡®I knew it was too good to last,¡¯ said Biff.
