Cover/Introduction
Biff and Chip love playing ball games. Do you know what game they are playing here? Playing with a ball in a small garden can sometimes lead to trouble. Biff and Chip had all sort of difficulties when they played ball in their back garden, until Dad had a really good idea.
비프와 칩은 공놀이 게임을 좋아합니다. 그들이 여기서 무슨 놀이를 하고 있는지 아나요? 작은 마당에서 공놀이를 하는 것은 때때로 문제를 일으키기도 합니다. 비프와 칩은 아빠가 좋은 생각이 떠올랐을 때까지 뒷마당에서 공놀이를 할 때엔 어려움을 겪기도 했답니다.

No-one was pleased when Chip kicked the plastic football at the roses, and it punctured on one of the sharp thorns.
칩이 축구공을 장미꽃밭으로 차서 공이 가시에 찔려 터졌을 때 모두가 기쁘지 않았답니다.
Biff wasn’t pleased.
비프도 기쁘지 않았어요.
It was her football.
그녀의 공이었거든요.
Dad wasn’t pleased either, because he didn’t want the roses spoilt.
아빠도 기쁘지 않았답니다, 왜냐하면 장미꽃이 망가지는게 싫었기 때문이지요.
‘Hey, you two!’ he shouted.
‘이봐! 너희 둘!’ 아빠가 소리쳤어요.
‘Play football down the bottom of the garden.
‘정원에서는 공놀이 하는걸 자제 하거라.
There aren’t any roses down there.’
장미꽃이 남아있질 않잖니.’
‘We can’t play football anywhere now,’ said Biff.
‘우린 어느 곳에서도 축구를 할 수 없어요,’ 비프가 말했어요.
‘We don’t have a football anymore &‘우린 더 이상 축구공도 없구요 &
‘It wasn’t my fault,’ moaned Chip.
‘그건 내 잘못이 아니야,’ 칩이 투덜거렸지요.
‘I didn’t know that the ball would puncture so easily.’
‘난 공이 그렇게 쉽게 터질 줄 몰랐어.’

Now that they couldn’t play football, they decided to get out the badminton rackets and play badminton.
그들은 축구를 할 수 없어서, 베드민턴 라켓을 가지고 나와 베드민턴을 하기로 결정했어요.
‘We’ve only got one shuttlecock,’ said Biff. ‘So we will have to be careful.’
‘베드민턴 공이 하나밖에 없네,’ 비프가 말했어요. ‘우린 조심해야해.’
At first, they were very careful.
처음에 그들은 매우 주의해서 놀았지요.
They hit the shuttlecock gently between each other, seeing who would be first to miss it.
그들은 누가 먼저 공을 떨어뜨리나 보면서, 얌전하게 베드민턴 공을 주고 받았어요.
Most of the time they only hit it about twice each.
대부분, 그들은 각자 두 번씩 밖에 못 쳤어요.
‘Hitting a shuttlecock is quite difficult,’ said Biff.
‘베드민턴 공을 치는 건 너무 어려워,’ 비프가 말했어요.
‘It’s not like hitting a ball.’
‘공을 치는 것 같지 않아.’
‘That’s true,’ said Chip. ‘You can hit a shuttlecock really hard &‘맞아,’ 칩이 말했어요. ‘넌 이렇게 베드민턴 공을 어렵게 칠 수 밖에 없어, 그리고 이건 멀리 나가지도 않아.’
As he said this he gave the shuttle a huge whack with his racket.
그는 이렇게 말하면서 그의 라켓으로 거세게 공을 내리 쳤어요.
It flew up in the air and landed on the roof.
공은 날라가 지붕 위에 앉았죠.
‘Oh no!’ groaned Biff. ‘You’ve knocked it into the gutter. How on earth are we going to get it down?’
‘오 저런! 홈통에 빠졌잖아. 대체 저걸 어떻게 꺼낸담?’ 비프가 끙끙거렸어요.
‘I’m afraid it will just have to say there until the wind blows it down,’ said Dad.
‘아무래도 바람이 공을 날려 내려줄 때 까지 기다려야 할 것 같구나,’ 아빠가 말했어요.

Biff remembered that there was a tiny cricket bat in the shed.
비프는 창고에 작은 크리켓(영국에서 인기 있는 스포츠) 라켓이 있다는 걸 생각해냈어요.
‘Let’s play French Cricket,’ she said.
‘프랑스식 크리켓 놀이 하자,’ 그녀가 말했죠.
Chip couldn’t remember what French Cricket was.
‘칩은 프랑스식 크리켓 놀이가 어떤 것인지 기억이 나질 않았어요.
‘You know,’ said Biff. ‘You have to try and hit my legs with the ball.
‘음, 공으로 내 다리를 치려고 하면 돼.’
I have to make sure you don’t.
난 너가 못하게 막아야 하구.
If you catch the ball, or hit my legs or feet, I’m not.’
만약 너가 공을 잡거나, 내 다리나 발을 치면, 난 지는거야.’
French Cricket might have been a good game to play in the garden if Biff had remembered not to hit the ball too hard, but she didn’t.
만약 비프가 공을 너무 세게 치지 않아야 한다는 걸 알았다면 프랑스식 크리켓은 좋은 놀이가 될 것이었지만, 그녀는 그렇게 하지 못했어요.
When Chip threw the ball at Biff’s legs she whacked it, and it whizzed through the air and flew over the fence into the neighbor’s garden.
칩이 공을 비프 다리 쪽으로 쳤을 때, 그녀는 공을 세게 쳤고 그것은 &
The neighbor was watching what happened through his upstairs window.

‘Oh dear,’ said Biff. ‘He doesn’t look too pleased. I think we should wait until he throws the ball back, but that might not be until tomorrow!’
‘어머나, 그가 기분이 나빠보인다. 그가 공을 돌려줄 때까지 기다리는게 좋겠어, 근데 내일까지 기다리지 않는다면 좋으련만!’ 비프가 말했답니다.

The next day, Dad came back from town with a long, thin box.
다음날, 아빠는 길고 가는 상자를 가지고 시내에서 돌아왔어요.
‘I’ve got a surprise for you two,’ he said.
‘놀랄 만한 것이 있다,’ 아빠는 말했어요.
‘I think I’ve thought of a way for you to play ball games safely in the back garden.’
‘뒷마당에서 안전하게 공놀이를 할 수 있는 방법을 생각해 봤지.’
He opened the box and pulled out two long metal poles.
그는 상자를 열어 긴 쇠 막대기를 꺼냈어요.
‘One of those poles looks like a giant corkscrew,’ said Chip.
‘이 막대기 중 하나는 거대한 코르크 따개처럼 보인다,’ 칩이 말했죠.
‘What do you think it is?’
‘이게 뭐라고 생각해?’
‘I don’t know,’ said Biff. ‘Whatever it is, it’s got rackets and a ball on a cord.’
‘모르겠는걸, 근데 라켓과 공이 끈에 묶여있구나.’
‘It’s called a Swing Ball,’ said Dad.
‘이건 ‘회전 공’이라 불린단다,’ 아빠가 말했어요.

Dad put the two metal poles together and pushed the Swing Ball into the grass in the centre of the lawn.
아빠는 두개의 쇠막대기를 같이 꺼내 잔디 가운데에 ‘회전 공’을 밀어 넣었답니다.
He gave Biff and Chip two black plastic rackets.
그는 비프와 칩에게 두개의 검정 라켓을 주었어요.
‘There we are’ he said. ‘You can see how it works. Now you can play as much as you like, and there won’t be any more trouble.’
‘여기 있다. 어떻게 하는 건지 보게 될꺼야. 이젠 너희가 놀고 싶은 만큼 놀아도 돼. 그리고 더 이상 문제가 없을꺼야.’ 아빠가 말했어요.
‘It’s brilliant,’ said Chip. ‘But it’s quite hard to hit the ball sometimes when it swing round at you.’
‘멋지다! 근데 공이 너 주위에서 흔들릴 때는 치기가 꽤 어려운걸.’
Mum came out to watch them playing.
엄마가 그들이 놀이하는걸 보려고 나왔어요.
‘Hurry up, you two. Dad and I want to have a go.’
‘얘들아! 빨리해! 아빠와 나도 해보고 싶구나.’
‘I knew it was too good to last,’ said Biff.
‘계속 하는 게 좋을 것 같아요.’ 비프가 말했어요.
