When the children woke up, and looked out of the window one Saturday morning it was foggy.
¾ÆÀ̵éÀÌ ÀϾÀ» ¶§, Åä¿äÀÏ ¾Æħ â¹Û¿¡ ¾È°³°¡ ¸¹ÀÌ ³¢¾î ÀÖ¾ú¾î¿ä.

In fact it was so foggy they could hardly see the houses on the other side of the street.
»ç½Ç ¾È°³°¡ ³Ê¹« ¸¹ÀÌ ³¢¾î À־ ±æ°¡ÀÇ ´Ù¸¥ ÁýµéÁ¶Â÷ º¸±â Èûµé¾ú´ä´Ï´Ù.

¡®It¡¯s like looking through the bottom of a dirty milk bottle,¡¯ said Chop.
"´õ·¯¿î ¿ìÀ¯º´ ¹Ù´ÚÀ» ÅëÇØ º¸´Â°Í °°¾Æ"¶ó°í ChipÀÌ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä.

¡®It¡¯s all sort of grayish-white and horrid-looking.¡¯ ¡®It means we won¡¯t be going outside to play,¡¯ said Biff. ¡®But we can stay indoors and watch television instead.¡¯

When Biff switched the television on there was nothing to watch because it was only half past eight and the children¡¯s programmes hadn¡¯t started yet.
Biff°¡ ÅÚ·¹ºñÁ¯À» Ä×À» ¶§ ¿©´ü½Ã ¹Ý¹Û¿¡ µÇÁö ¾Ê¾Æ ¾ÆÀ̵éÀÇ ÇÁ·Î±×·¥ÀÌ ½ÃÀÛÇÏÁö ¾Ê¾Ò±â ¶§¹®¿¡ º¼ °ÍÀÌ ¾Æ¹«°Íµµ ¾ø¾ú¾î¿ä.

¡®I know what we can do,¡¯ said Chip. ¡®We can play with the Scalextric. We haven¡¯t had it out for ages.¡¯

The Scalextric set was kept under Chip¡¯s bed. The box was all done up with Sellotape because it had a split down one side.
ChipÀÇ Ä§´ë¹Ø¿¡ Scalextric À» ¼³Ä¡Çß¾î¿ä. ¹Ú½º¸¦ ¸ðµÎ ¼¿·ÎÅ×ÀÙÀ¸·Î °íÁ¤½ÃÄ×¾î¿ä. ÀÌ°ÍÀÌ ÇÑÂÊÀ¸·Î ¹«³ÊÁö±â ¶§¹®ÀÌ¿¡¿ä.

Chip carried the box down to the front room and he and Kipper began to put the pieces of track together.
ChipÀÌ ¹Ú½ºµéÀ» ¹æÀ¸·Î ¿Å±â°í ³­ÈÄ Chip°ú Kipper°¡ Æ®·¢µéÀ» ³õ±â ½ÃÀÛÇß¾î¿ä.

Kipper wasn¡¯t very good at playing Scalextric.
Kipper´Â Scalextric³îÀÌ¿¡ ´É¼÷ÇÏÁö ¸øÇÏ´ä´Ï´Ù.

When he pressed his control his car whizzed round the track and he couldn¡¯t make it go slow enough to go round the corners without crashing.
Kipper°¡ ÀÚµ¿Â÷ Á¶Á¾±â¸¦ ´­·¶¾î¿ä..ÀÚµ¿Â÷°¡ »ç°í ¾øÀÌ Äڳʸ¦ µ¹ ¼ö ÀÖµµ·Ï õõÈ÷ °¡µµ·Ï Á¶Á¾ÇؾßÇϴµ¥ Kipper´Â ±×·¸°Ô ÇÏÁö ¸øÇß¾î¿ä.

¡®You and Biff can race first,¡¯ announced Chip. Just then Dad came into the room. He wanted to go shopping and he had the children¡¯s anoraks and scarves.
"Kipper¿Í Biff´Â ù¹ø° °æÁÖ¸¦ ÇÒ ¼ö ÀÖ¾î" chipÀÌ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä.±× ¶§ ¸¶Ä§ ¾Æºü°¡ ¹æÀ¸·Î µé¾î ¿Ô¾î¿ä. ¾Æºü´Â ¼îÇÎÀ» °¡°íÀÚ Çß°í¿ä, ¾ÆÀ̵éÀÇ ¸ðÇÇÀçŶ°ú ½ºÄ«ÇÁ¸¦ °¡Áö°í ¿Ô´ä´Ï´Ù.

¡®Come on you three,¡¯ he said. ¡®I want you to help me get shopping at the supermarket.¡¯
"³ÊÈñ ¼¼¸í..À̸®¿ÍºÁ.~~!!"¾Æºü´Â ³ÊÈñµéÀÌ ¼öÆÛ¸¶ÄÏ¿¡¼­ ¼îÇÎÇÏ´Â °ÍÀ» µµ¿ÍÁÖ±æ ¹Ù·¡..."

¡®Oh no!¡¯ said children. ¡®It¡¯s too foggy to go shopping.¡¯ ¡®No shopping, no food for the weekend,¡¯ said Dad. ¡®So come on!¡¯
"Oh no.." " ¼îÇÎÇϱ⿣ ¾È°³°¡ ³Ê¹« ¸¹¾Æ¿ä." ¾ÆÀ̵éÀÌ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä. "¼îÇÎÀ» ÇÏÁö ¾ÊÀ¸¸é ÁÖ¸»¿¡ ¸ÔÀ» °ÍÀÌ ¾ø¾î. À̸®µé ¿Í.."

The children didn¡¯t like the fog much. It looked thick and grey and it smelled damp smocky. Nothing looked as if it was real.
¾ÆÀ̵éÀº ¾È°³¸¦ ³Ê¹« ½È¾îÇß¾î¿ä. ¾È°³´Â ¾îµÓ°í Àíºû¿¡ ÃàÃàÇÏ°í ³¿»õ°¡ ³ª¿ä. Áø¥ó·³ º¸ÀÌ´Â °ÍÀº ¾Æ¹«°Íµµ ¾ø¾î¿ä.

¡®The fog makes me feel miserable.¡¯ Said Kipper as they got into the car.
"¾È°³´Â ³» ±âºÐÀ» »óÇÏ°Ô ÇØ" Â÷¸¦Å¸¸é¼­ kipper°¡ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä.

¡®Fog¡¯s all right as long as you haven¡¯t got to go out in it,¡¯ grumbled Chip.
"¾È°³°¡ ³¤ µ¿¾ÈÀº ¹ÛÀ» ³ª°¥ ¼ö°¡ ¾ø¾î.." ¶ó°í chipÀÌ Åõ´ú°Å·È¾î¿ä.

Dad knew they were fed up. ¡®We¡¯ll be as quick as we can,¡¯ he said. ¡®At least it isn¡¯t too thick for me to drive the car. Fog can get much worse than this, you know.¡¯

¡®Can I buy some felt tip pens at the supermarket?¡¯ asked Biff, ¡®I want to draw a monster when we get back.¡¯
"ÆçÆ®·Î ¸¸µç Tip ÆæÀ» ½´ÆÛ¸¶ÄÏ¿¡¼­ »ì ¼ö ÀÖ¾î¿ä?"Biff°¡ ¹°¾ú¾î¿ä. "³ª´Â Áý¿¡ °¡¸é ±«¹°À» ±×¸®°í ½Í¾î..!!"

¡®What sort of monster?¡¯ asked Chip.
"¾î¶² ±«¹°??" Chip°¡ ¹°¾ú¾î¿ä...

¡®One that only comes out on foggy days,¡¯ said Biff.
"¾È°³ ³¤ ³¯¿¡¸¸ ³ª¿À´Â ±«¹°...!!" Biff°¡ ¸»Çß½À´Ï´Ù.

1. Kipper said that fog made him feel miserable. What do you think he meant?

When Dad said that the fog could get much worse, he didn¡¯t expect it to happen quite so quickly. As he drove the car into town the fog got worse. In fact it got so thick that Dad couldn¡¯t see.

¡®I wonder where the road went to?¡¯ said Dad, peering through the windscreen.
"¾îµð·Î °¡¾ßÇϴ°ÅÁö?" ¾ÕÀ¯¸®¸¦ ÅëÇØ À¯½ÉÈ÷ ¹Ù¶óº¸¸ç ¾Æºü°¡ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä.

¡®I think it¡¯s over there,¡¯ said Biff. ¡®At the moment you¡¯re driving on some grass.¡¯
"³» »ý°¢¿£ Àú±â °°Àºµ¥.. Áö±Ý ¾Æºü°¡ Àܵð¹çÀ¸·Î ¿îÀüÇϴ°Š°°¾Æ¿ä..."Biff °¡ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä.

¡®That¡¯s funny,¡¯ said Dad. ¡®I didn¡¯t think there was any grass between our house and the supermarket.¡¯
"ÇÏÇÏ ¿ô±â´Â ±¸³ª..¿ì¸®Áý°ú ½´ÆÛ¸¶ÄÏ »çÀÌ¿¡´Â ¾Æ¹«·± Àܵð¹çµµ ¾ø´Â°É·Î ¾Æ´Âµ¥..."¾Æºü°¡ ¸»Çß´ä´Ï´Ù.

At last Dad stopped the car at a petrol station, and they got out.

¡®This must be the one we pass on the way to the supermarket,¡¯ said Biff.
"¿ì¸®°¡ ½´ÆÛ¸¶ÄÏÀÌ °¡±â À§ÇØ ÀÌ °÷À» Åë°úÇؾ߸¸ ÇØ.." Biff °¡ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä.

The petrol station looked different in the fog. The lighted sign gave out a strange sort of glow.
¾È°³ ¼ÓÀÇ ÁÖÀ¯¼Ò´Â ´Ù¸£°Ô º¸¿´¾î¿ä. Light°£ÆÇÀÌ ÀÌ»óÇÑ ºÒºûó·³ ºû³ª°í ÀÖ¾ú¾î¿ä.

By now the fog was even thicker, and they knew they couldn¡¯t drive any further. There was only one thing for it. They had to walk home.
¾È°³°¡ ´õ¿í ½ÉÇØÁ® ´õÀÌ»ó Â÷¸¦ ¸ô°í °¥ ¼ö ¾ø´Ù´Â °É ¾Ë¾Ò¾î¿ä. ´ÜÁö ÇÒ ¼ö ÀÖ´Â ÀÏÀº Áý±îÁö °É¾î°¡¾ß ÇÑ´Ù´Â °ÅÁö¿ä.

¡®Sorry,¡¯ said Dad. ¡®I just didn¡¯t think fog would get so thick.¡¯
"¹Ì¾ÈÇϱ¸³ª" ¾Æºü°¡ ¸»Çß½À´Ï´Ù. "¾È°³°¡ ÀÌ·¸°Ô £¾îÁú ÁÙ ¸ô¶ú¾î.."

¡®We don¡¯t mind,¡¯ said Chip, ¡®as long as we don¡¯t bump into Biff¡¯s fog monster on the way!¡¯
"±¦Âú¾Æ¿ä.." ChipÀÌ ¸»Çß½À´Ï´Ù. " ´õÀÌ»ó BiffÀÇ ¾È°³ ±«¹°¿¡ ºÎµúÈ÷Áö ¾ÊÀ» °Å¿¡¿ä."

Walking home wasn¡¯t easy. The fog got worse and in the end it was so thick that they would hardly see each other, let alone see the way to go.
Áý±îÁö °É¾î°¡´Â °ÍÀº ½±Áö ¾Ê¾Ò¾î¿ä..¾È°³°¡ ½ÉÇØÁö°í °á±¹ ³Ê¹« µÎ²¨¿öÁ®¼­ ¼­·ÎÀÇ ¾ó±¼À» º¼ ¼ö°¡ ¾ø¾ú¾î¿ä. ¸ðµÎ Ȧ·Î ±æÀ» µû¶ó °¬Áö¿ä..

It was so hard to see where they were going, , that Dad suggested they each hold on to a scarf and make a sort of human chain.
°¡´Â °ÍÀÌ ³Ê¹« ÈûµéÀÚ ¾Æºü°¡ Á¦¾ÈÀ» Çß¾î¿ä. ¼­·ç ½ºÄ«ÇÁ¸¦ Àâ°í Àΰ£ üÀÎÀ» ¸¸µéÀÚ´Â °ÍÀ̾úÁö¿ä..

¡®I¡¯ve never seen fog like this before,¡¯ said Dad. ¡®it¡¯s a real pea-souper.¡¯
"ÀÌ·± ¾È°³´Â óÀ½ º¸´Â±¸³ª..""²À ¿ÏµÎÄá ¼öÇÁ°°¾Æ.."

¡®A pea-super!¡¯ laughed Chip. ¡®That sounds funny.¡¯
"¿ÏµÎÄá ¼öÇÁ!"ChipÀÌ ¿ô¾ú½À´Ï´Ù. "¿ô±ä°É..."

¡®It¡¯s because pea soup is really thick and looks a yellowy sort of green,¡¯ said Biff. ¡®Mum opened a tin of pea soup once.¡¯
"¿Ö³Ä¸é ¿À³ªµÎÄá ¼öÇÁ´Â Á¤¸» ÁúÆÞÁúÆÞ ÇÏ°í ¿¬µÎ»öÀ̰ŵç..."ÇÏ°í Biff°¡ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä. "¾ö¸¶°¡ Çѹø ¿ÏµÎÄá ½ºÇª ÅëÁ¶¸²À» µýÀûÀÌ ÀÖ¾î.."

¡®Yuk!¡¯ exclaimed Kipper. ¡®I wonder if pea soup tastes as bad as big fog.¡¯
"¿ì¿í...¿ÏµÎÄá ½ºÇª´Â ÀÎ ¾È°³Ã³·³ ¸ÀÀÌ ¾ÆÁÖ ¾ÈÁÁÀ» °Å¾ß,," ¶ó°í Kipper°¡ ¸»Çß½À´Ï´Ù.

¡®You can¡¯t taste fog,¡¯ said Biff. ¡®I can¡¯ said Kipper.
"³Í ¾È°³¸ÀÀ» º¼ ¼ö°¡ ¾øÀݾÆ..." Biff°¡ ¸»ÇÏÀÚ "ÇÒ ¼ö ÀÖ¾î!!"ÇÏ°í Kipper°¡ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä...

Suddenly Dad stopped. The fog was so thick by now that they were lost.

1. What is a human chain? How did they make one? Why did Dad think it was a good idea?

¡®I think we¡¯ve been along this street before,¡¯ said Dad. ¡®The trouble is, I can¡¯t see anywhere I recognize. How about any of you? Can you make out where we are?¡¯
"³»»ý°¢¿£ À̱æÀ» Àü¿¡ °É¾ú´ø°Å °°±¸³ª..."¾Æºü°¡ ¸»Çß¾î¿ä..."¹®Á¦´Â..¾î´À °÷µµ ³»°¡ º¼ ¼ö°¡ ¾ø±¸³ª..³ÊÈñµéÀº ¾î¶°´Ï?? ¿©±â°¡ ¾îµòÁö ¾Ë ¼ö ÀÖ°Ú´Ï?"

¡®In the lad of the fog monster,¡¯ said Kipper in his best monstery voice.
