It’s no fun being out in the fog &밖에 안개가 끼면 재미난 일이 없어요..더욱이 안개가 많이 낀 날엔 길도 보기 힘들답니다.
만약 아빠가 안개가 낀 것을 알았다면 아이들을 밖으로 내보내지 않았을 겁니다.

When the children woke up, and looked out of the window one Saturday morning it was foggy.
아이들이 일어났을 때, 토요일 아침 창밖에 안개가 많이 끼어 있었어요.
In fact it was so foggy they could hardly see the houses on the other side of the street.
사실 안개가 너무 많이 끼어 있어서 길가의 다른 집들조차 보기 힘들었답니다.
‘It’s like looking through the bottom of a dirty milk bottle,’ said Chop.
"더러운 우유병 바닥을 통해 보는것 같아"라고 Chip이 말했어요.
‘It’s all sort of grayish-white and horrid-looking.’ ‘It means we won’t be going outside to play,’ said Biff. ‘But we can stay indoors and watch television instead.’
"잿빛에 소름끼치는 것 같아" "이것은 우리가 밖에 나가서 놀 수 없다는 의미야.."Biff가 말했어요. "그렇지만 우리는 대신 집안에서 텔레비젼을 보면 돼."
When Biff switched the television on there was nothing to watch because it was only half past eight and the children’s programmes hadn’t started yet.
Biff가 텔레비젼을 켰을 때 여덟시 반밖에 되지 않아 아이들의 프로그램이 시작하지 않았기 때문에 볼 것이 아무것도 없었어요.
‘I know what we can do,’ said Chip. ‘We can play with the Scalextric. We haven’t had it out for ages.’
"우리가 무얼 할 수 있을지 알겠어!" "우리는 Scalextic을 가지고 놀면 돼..한동안 이걸 가지고 놀지 않았잖아.."

The Scalextric set was kept under Chip’s bed. The box was all done up with Sellotape because it had a split down one side.
Chip의 침대밑에 Scalextric 을 설치했어요. 박스를 모두 셀로테잎으로 고정시켰어요. 이것이 한쪽으로 무너지기 때문이에요.
Chip carried the box down to the front room and he and Kipper began to put the pieces of track together.
Chip이 박스들을 방으로 옮기고 난후 Chip과 Kipper가 트랙들을 놓기 시작했어요.
Kipper wasn’t very good at playing Scalextric.
Kipper는 Scalextric놀이에 능숙하지 못하답니다.
When he pressed his control his car whizzed round the track and he couldn’t make it go slow enough to go round the corners without crashing.
Kipper가 자동차 조종기를 눌렀어요..자동차가 사고 없이 코너를 돌 수 있도록 천천히 가도록 조종해야하는데 Kipper는 그렇게 하지 못했어요.
‘You and Biff can race first,’ announced Chip. Just then Dad came into the room. He wanted to go shopping and he had the children’s anoraks and scarves.
"Kipper와 Biff는 첫번째 경주를 할 수 있어" chip이 말했어요.그 때 마침 아빠가 방으로 들어 왔어요. 아빠는 쇼핑을 가고자 했고요, 아이들의 모피재킷과 스카프를 가지고 왔답니다.
‘Come on you three,’ he said. ‘I want you to help me get shopping at the supermarket.’
"너희 세명..이리와봐.~~!!"아빠는 너희들이 수퍼마켓에서 쇼핑하는 것을 도와주길 바래..."
‘Oh no!’ said children. ‘It’s too foggy to go shopping.’ ‘No shopping, no food for the weekend,’ said Dad. ‘So come on!’
"Oh no.." " 쇼핑하기엔 안개가 너무 많아요." 아이들이 말했어요. "쇼핑을 하지 않으면 주말에 먹을 것이 없어. 이리들 와.."

The children didn’t like the fog much. It looked thick and grey and it smelled damp smocky. Nothing looked as if it was real.
아이들은 안개를 너무 싫어했어요. 안개는 어둡고 잿빛에 축축하고 냄새가 나요. 진짜처럼 보이는 것은 아무것도 없어요.
‘The fog makes me feel miserable.’ Said Kipper as they got into the car.
"안개는 내 기분을 상하게 해" 차를타면서 kipper가 말했어요.
‘Fog’s all right as long as you haven’t got to go out in it,’ grumbled Chip.
"안개가 낀 동안은 밖을 나갈 수가 없어.." 라고 chip이 투덜거렸어요.
Dad knew they were fed up. ‘We’ll be as quick as we can,’ he said. ‘At least it isn’t too thick for me to drive the car. Fog can get much worse than this, you know.’
아빠는 아이들이 싫증난 것을 알았어요. "우리 될 수 있는대로 빨리 하자구...지금 안개는 운전하기는 어렵지 않지만. 이것보다 더 심해 질수 있다는 걸 너희도 알지 않니..." 아빠가 말했어요.
‘Can I buy some felt tip pens at the supermarket?’ asked Biff, ‘I want to draw a monster when we get back.’
"펠트로 만든 Tip 펜을 슈퍼마켓에서 살 수 있어요?"Biff가 물었어요. "나는 집에 가면 괴물을 그리고 싶어..!!"
‘What sort of monster?’ asked Chip.
"어떤 괴물??" Chip가 물었어요...
‘One that only comes out on foggy days,’ said Biff.
"안개 낀 날에만 나오는 괴물...!!" Biff가 말했습니다.

When Dad said that the fog could get much worse, he didn’t expect it to happen quite so quickly. As he drove the car into town the fog got worse. In fact it got so thick that Dad couldn’t see.
아빠가 안개가 더 심해 질 수 있다고 말했을 대 아빠는 그렇게 빨리 그런 일이 일어날 거라고 예상하지 못했어요. 시내로 차가 들어섰을 때 안개는 더욱 심해졌어요. 아빠가 앞을 볼 수 없을 정도로 안개는 두꺼워 졌답니다.
‘I wonder where the road went to?’ said Dad, peering through the windscreen.
"어디로 가야하는거지?" 앞유리를 통해 유심히 바라보며 아빠가 말했어요.
‘I think it’s over there,’ said Biff. ‘At the moment you’re driving on some grass.’
"내 생각엔 저기 같은데.. 지금 아빠가 잔디밭으로 운전하는거 같아요..."Biff 가 말했어요.
‘That’s funny,’ said Dad. ‘I didn’t think there was any grass between our house and the supermarket.’
"하하 웃기는 구나..우리집과 슈퍼마켓 사이에는 아무런 잔디밭도 없는걸로 아는데..."아빠가 말했답니다.

At last Dad stopped the car at a petrol station, and they got out.
마침내 아빠가 주유소에 차를 세웠고 모두 내렸어요.
‘This must be the one we pass on the way to the supermarket,’ said Biff.
"우리가 슈퍼마켓이 가기 위해 이 곳을 통과해야만 해.." Biff 가 말했어요.
The petrol station looked different in the fog. The lighted sign gave out a strange sort of glow.
안개 속의 주유소는 다르게 보였어요. Light간판이 이상한 불빛처럼 빛나고 있었어요.
By now the fog was even thicker, and they knew they couldn’t drive any further. There was only one thing for it. They had to walk home.
안개가 더욱 심해져 더이상 차를 몰고 갈 수 없다는 걸 알았어요. 단지 할 수 있는 일은 집까지 걸어가야 한다는 거지요.
‘Sorry,’ said Dad. ‘I just didn’t think fog would get so thick.’
"미안하구나" 아빠가 말했습니다. "안개가 이렇게 짙어질 줄 몰랐어.."
‘We don’t mind,’ said Chip, ‘as long as we don’t bump into Biff’s fog monster on the way!’
"괜찮아요.." Chip이 말했습니다. " 더이상 Biff의 안개 괴물에 부딪히지 않을 거에요."

Walking home wasn’t easy. The fog got worse and in the end it was so thick that they would hardly see each other, let alone see the way to go.
집까지 걸어가는 것은 쉽지 않았어요..안개가 심해지고 결국 너무 두꺼워져서 서로의 얼굴을 볼 수가 없었어요. 모두 홀로 길을 따라 갔지요..
It was so hard to see where they were going, , that Dad suggested they each hold on to a scarf and make a sort of human chain.
가는 것이 너무 힘들자 아빠가 제안을 했어요. 서루 스카프를 잡고 인간 체인을 만들자는 것이었지요..
‘I’ve never seen fog like this before,’ said Dad. ‘it’s a real pea-souper.’
"이런 안개는 처음 보는구나..""꼭 완두콩 수프같아.."
‘A pea-super!’ laughed Chip. ‘That sounds funny.’
"완두콩 수프!"Chip이 웃었습니다. "웃긴걸..."
‘It’s because pea soup is really thick and looks a yellowy sort of green,’ said Biff. ‘Mum opened a tin of pea soup once.’
"왜냐면 오나두콩 수프는 정말 질펄질펄 하고 연두색이거든..."하고 Biff가 말했어요. "엄마가 한번 완두콩 스푸 통조림을 딴적이 있어.."
‘Yuk!’ exclaimed Kipper. ‘I wonder if pea soup tastes as bad as big fog.’
"우욱...완두콩 스푸는 인 안개처럼 맛이 아주 안좋을 거야,," 라고 Kipper가 말했습니다.
‘You can’t taste fog,’ said Biff. ‘I can’ said Kipper.
"넌 안개맛을 볼 수가 없잖아..." Biff가 말하자 "할 수 있어!!"하고 Kipper가 말했어요...
Suddenly Dad stopped. The fog was so thick by now that they were lost.
그때 갑자기 아빠가 멈추었답니다. 안개가 너무 짙어서 그들은 길을 잃었어요...

‘I think we’ve been along this street before,’ said Dad. ‘The trouble is, I can’t see anywhere I recognize. How about any of you? Can you make out where we are?’
"내생각엔 이길을 전에 걸었던거 같구나..."아빠가 말했어요..."문제는..어느 곳도 내가 볼 수가 없구나..너희들은 어떠니?? 여기가 어딘지 알 수 있겠니?"
‘In the lad of the fog monster,’ said Kipper in his best monstery voice.
"안개 괴물의 땅!!"Kipper가 아주 괴기스러운 목소리로 말했어요...
‘Don’t be silly,’ said Dad. ‘This is no time to make jokes about monsters.’
"바보같은 소리하지마..지금 괴물에 대해 농담할 시간이 없어.." 아빠가 말했어요..
‘You don’t think Dad believes in the fog monster, do you?’ Whispered Kipper. ‘Everyone knows you only see monsters on television.’
"아빠가 안개 괴물을 믿고 있다고 생각하지 않니?"Kipper가 놀리자, "모두 너가 그 괴물을 텔레비젼에서만 본 걸 다 알고 있어.."
Both Biff and Chip thought they knew where they were. ‘This way,’ said Biff.
Biff와 Chip은 모두 자신들이 길을 알고 있다고 생각했어요. "이길이야..." Biff가 말하자
‘No, this way,’ said Chip, pointing in the opposite direction.
"아냐 이길이야...!!"Chip가 반대 방향을 가르키며 말했어요.
‘Oh dear,’ sighed Dad. ‘I think we really are lost.’
"맙소사..내생각에는 우리가 정말 길을 잃은거 같아..."아빠가 한숨을 쉬었어요..

‘Well,’ said Dad. ‘We’ll just have to find someone and ask them where we are.’
"음...우린 누군가를 찾아 여기가 어딘지 물어봐야겠어.."아빠가 말했어요..
‘But if we do come across someone, won’t they be lost, too?’ asked Chip.
"그렇지만 누군가를 마주쳤을때 그도 길을 잃은거 아닐까요?"Chip이 묻자,
‘Not if it’s the fog monster,’ said Kipper,’ in his monstery voice. ‘The fog monster can see, even in the thickest fog.’
"안개 괴물만 아니라면..."하고 Kipper가 괴물스런 목소리로 말했어요.."안개 괴물은 이런 짙은 안개속에서도 볼 수 있어.."
‘Be quiet, Kipper,’ said Dad. ‘Just stay close to me and Keep walking slowly. We’ll find a house and ask someone.’
"조용히 해!!Kipper!! 모두 내곁에 가까이 붙어 천천히 걸어라..집을 찾아 누군가에게 물어봐야겠어.."아빠가 말했습니다.
Ahead they saw a light. It looked like the doorway to someone’s house but there, in the light, was a strange-looking figure. It seemed to have two heads and a hunched back.
그들은 앞에 어떤 불빛을 보았어요.. 누군가의 집 문의 불빛같은데 이상한 모양이네요. 두개의 머리와 곱사등같이 보였어요..
Dad gulped. The strange figure didn’t move. ‘A…a…a monster,’ said Dad. ‘it’s the fog monster,’
아빠는 숨을 죽였어요.. 그 이상한 물체는 움직이지 않았어요.."괴..괴...괴물이다!!!안개 괴물이야...!!"아빠가 말했습니다.

‘Is that you?’ said the strange-looking figure.
"당신이야?" 이상한 물체가 말했어요..
Everyone laughed. ‘It’s Mum!’ said the children. And, of course, it was. She was carrying Floppy, and that’s why she looked such a strange shape in the doorway.
모두들 웃었답니다. "엄마!!!" 아이들이 말했어요..물론 엄마였지요..엄마는 Floppy를 데리고 있어어요..그것이 엄마를 이상한 물체처럼 보이게 했던 것이지요..
‘Thank goodness you’re home safely,’ said Mum. ‘I was beginning to get worried. The fog has really got bad in the past half hour.’
"정말 다행이야..집까지 안전하게 왔으니..걱정하기 시작했단 말이에요..30분 전부터 안개가 정말 심해지기 시작했어요..."엄마가 말했어요..
‘Dad thought you were the fog monster,’ laughed Kipper.
"아빤 엄마가 괴물인줄 알았어요~~!!"Kipper가 웃었어요..
‘I didn’t really,’ said Dad. ‘I was just having a little joke because Kipper kept on about it.’
"아니야~~Kipper 니가 계속 괴물이야기를 하니 단지 농담한 것 뿐이야..."
Everyone laughed, but Biff wondered if Dad really been scared of the strange shape in the doorway.
모두들 웃었답니다. 그러나 Biff는 아빠가 정말 문 앞의 이상한 물체를 정말 겁에 질렸는지 궁금했어요.. |
